Flight chair. We make a coffee table and a table from pallets. Design, construction, form - we determine the key points

Pallet furniture today has moved from objects of amateur hobby and design delights to the category of industrial products. But many home masters and individual entrepreneurs continue to do it: it is cheap, profitable and useful to everyone. Furniture, and not only furniture, from cargo pallets (pallets) is a rare example of a heavily promoted trend these days, in which fashion trends are organically combined with practicality and usefulness.

Why is pallet furniture so popular? Cargo pallets are produced in the millions and are mainly used for transporting building materials and piece goods. This is justified both economically and environmentally: without pallets, compensation for scrap waste, damage to packaging, etc. would require many times more than for pallets, the cost of raw materials, production capacity and Money. The materials (mainly wood, see below) for pallets are of high quality, but the service life of the pallets is limited: e.g. when loaded with a working brick at a full rate of 1 t / sq. m - only 1 transportation cycle; although in reality pallets go up to 3-5 cycles.

As a result, wholesalers accumulate mountains of pallets (see fig.), awaiting revision or sent for processing, and in frequent self-building or small contractors, excellent seasoned wood, the manufacture of useful things from which is available at home and virtually free of charge, flies to a landfill. Pallets that are conditionally still suitable for their intended purpose, but not trimmed, can be bought at a price 2-3 times lower than the same cubic capacity of commercial pine. Pallets waiting in line for recycling will be gladly given away by wholesalers for self-delivery. As for small contractors, the typical answer to the request is that there are no pallets? – like this: “Pallets? Come on, take everything on ...! Only all at once! And the battle of bricks, tiles is not needed? Such generosity is quite understandable: used pallets are flammable material, littering the area near buildings of any kind is prohibited, and warehouses / dumps of cargo pallets must be located and equipped in accordance with all the rules fire safety. The fire inspectorate, as you know, if they see a violation, then they won’t put a hand on their hand. As a result, lovers of crafts can get excellent material literally for free and in any required quantity.

Raw material or material?

To make furniture from pallets with your own hands, you do not need special skills and complex tools: each pallet itself is a ready-made, durable assembly unit of sizes convenient for everyday life (see below). But, unfortunately, many samples of homemade pallets serve good examples how not very strong, and even frankly bad things are obtained from good strong structural modules. The fact is that the cargo pallet is not just a set of pieces of wood, but in itself a material with certain properties, requiring some specific technological methods. They are not known not only by “paper experts”, who write something like: “Pallets stacked on top of each other (secured with screws, of course) with a soft mattress can serve as a bed.” (the spelling of the quote is original), but what and how to do with pallets is not described in the carpentry and woodworking manuals either. There is no such officially recognized ornamental material as a second-hand cargo pallet, there is also recycled wood raw material. Therefore, a significant part of this publication is devoted to rational methods of working with pallets, described randomly in various sources and tested in practice by experienced furniture makers and, in part, by the author of this article personally.

What can be done from pallets?

There are so many ideas for furniture from pallets in Runet that just listing them would require a volume larger than allowed for this article. Some of them are shown in the photo; e.g. home bicycle parking from pallets is elementary simple, convenient and not so trivial.

Useful things from a pallet

For more on crafts from pallets, we suggest watching the following video, and then we will deal with things that require a more thoughtful technical approach to create from pallets.

In the garden and in the country

Most often made from pallets garden furniture: a tree, even painted, harmonizes well with living greenery. Decay-resistant wood species are used on pallets; after biocidal and hydrophobic impregnation under painting / varnishing, such furniture has been used for years outdoors. A cheap biocide and at the same time a water repellent for outdoor furniture from pallets - used motor oil. Oil, alkyd and nitro varnishes and paints are firmly held on the wood impregnated with mining. If the product will be painted / varnished with acrylic compounds, then the wood must be impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion. It will cost a little more, but health and ecology are ideal.

Country and garden furniture from pallets

A useful hanger-rack for giving can be obtained by simply hanging a sanded painted pallet on the wall, pos. 1 in fig. By the way, you also need to be able to grind “hairy” pallets, see below, in the technological sections. If you add 2-3 100-mm card loops, a couple of hooks to the wall, 2 pieces of rope or chain and a window latch as a latch to the same one-piece pallet, a folding work table will come out instead of a tool hanger. It is very convenient to mess around with seedlings, soil mixtures and potted crops: spilled falls down and does not clog the work surface.

Another option is to also put the solid pallet upright and secure with L-shaped pins. Pallets are designed for weights of many hundreds of kg, and 3-4 components of the countertop concrete blocks, left over from the paving of the track, is not a burden for them. But we have a compact desktop that can turn into a bar counter on the street without changes, pos. 2. Well, it happens, with a fit ...

Country furniture from pallets for arbors and verandas, pos. 3 and 4, most likely, it will require the dismantling of pallets (see below) to obtain moldings: long materials - boards, beams, skirting boards, moldings. Tables, chairs, stools are already being made quite like a carpenter, because. furniture made from solid pallets or their parts is rather bulky. However, it is not difficult to make a table or a stool with your own hands, if the material is good, and it turns out plenty of pallets. What is technologically more complicated (sofa, bench) made by traditional methods is also cumbersome; in this case, pallets will allow an inexperienced beginner to get a quality product similar to garden furniture.

A seating area in the garden is the perfect place for pallet furniture. Its dimensions and weight are not as important here as the endurance of the pallets. Making garden furniture out of pallets is technologically possible different ways(Pos. 5-8), but in any case, there is a problem of tilting the back, which is discussed further in a separate section. If the back is straight, then comfort is achieved by pillows that need to be taken out / brought in and saved from rain.

Note: pay attention to pos. 5, it's not that simple. Namely, the armrests of the sofa. Finding a vessel with a drink in such a niche is no more difficult than on an armrest, but it is almost impossible to accidentally knock it down.

Finally, it’s worth working on a complete disassembly of 2-3 pallets to make a picnic set: a table with benches. It can be in the gazebo, pergola and outdoors. You can carry a picnic corner with two or even alone: weight finished construction will not exceed 25-30 kg. What a 4-seat picnic table with benches looks like is shown on the left in the figure; drawings of its supporting frames are given there on the right. The length of the table top and benches is standard for euro pallets, 120 cm. By connecting a pair of trays for the table top, as described below, it can be increased to 240 cm, and the capacity of the product up to 8 people, without adding support frames. Connections of legs with transverse beams - through M8 bolts.

About the tilt of the backrest from the pallet

The backs of pallet furniture, such as those on the left and in the center in the top row in the figure, are found to be fragile. In the first case, steel self-tapping screws in the fasteners work in shear and gradually tear the tree. In the second it happens even faster, because. the ratio of the arms of the lever when reclining on the back is large. The same circumstance applies if the backrest slope is obtained by sawing off part of the seat tray with excess (orange arrow on the top right). The fastening knot (yellow arrow in the same place) now works in tension, but the turning lever is still long and the self-tapping screws gradually climb back.

The backrest design, shown at the bottom left, is quite reliable. Here 2 thick trees (pieces of timber) rest against each other and work on compression, which the wood holds well. In the same way (compression work), you can strengthen products that are more openwork (in the lower center) or more loaded (lower right) by placing spacers or support posts. For a chaise lounge from a pallet, it is better to make them adjustable by completing the nodes shown by the blue arrows, hinged on the bolts and sawing holes in the lower supporting frame for the heels of the swivel racks.

Note: however, it is also possible to achieve the desired overall strength of pallet furniture with the help of tensile stiffeners. See e.g. Below is a master class on making a sofa from pallets. In this case, it's the armrests.

Kitchen

Decorative hanger from a pallet in the kitchen

One lacquered pallet in the kitchen can serve only or mainly decorative element(see figure on the right), because natural wood fits perfectly in almost any kitchen interior. However, most often kitchen furniture from pallets is made fully functional, here again the strength and durability of the material play a role.

Technologically, the most simple are all kinds of hangers, shelves and mini-bars, pos. 1-4, 6 and 7 in fig. below. Not much more difficult, but much more beautiful and suitable for zoning a living space, a bar counter made of pallets, pos. 5. The main thing here is how to tint the tabletop boards, we will figure it out later.

Pallet kitchen furniture

A pallet rack (pos. 8) does not require special carpentry skills, but it will be needed complete disassembly pallets. How to simplify and facilitate it, also see below. received quality material it will be enough for an amateur carpenter to make, for example, a kitchen cabinet with a wine cellar or kitchen set. The “trick” here is that the material is junk: all of a sudden something didn’t work out right away, pallets are not an array of furniture for 3,500 rubles or more. per sq. m.

In an interesting way, the situation is with tables made of pallets, dining and cutting, pos. 10 and 11. Usually, in tables, the table top is heavily loaded, which imposes special requirements on the quality of its manufacture. But the solid load-bearing structure made of pallets provides a solid base for any overhead (glass, stone, etc.) or type-setting countertop. Just the latter can be assembled with your own hands from boards and beams from disassembled pallets, see below.

To house and apartment

Furniture made from pallets has a peculiar look, therefore, when made for the home, it must correspond to the style of interior design, which is not always feasible. For example, a pallet bed will fit perfectly into the now fashionable loft style, but already with rustic styles most likely there will be an aesthetic inconsistency, although the bed is wooden.

Video: loft-style pallet bed

However, aesthetically versatile options for the execution of pallet furniture are possible if the product is relatively small, does not dominate compositionally in the setting and is provided with some details that create visual transitions from the visually rough “core” of pallets to the general decor. An example is a work table that fits into an apartment of almost any design, except for frankly pretentious styles (empire, baroque, shabby chic, etc.), see fig.:

Pallet desk

The connecting links in this case are the legs of a geometrically regular shape, but painted in a contrasting tabletop and surrounding color. The utilitarian advantage of this table is the vast niches in the table base, where you can stuff all the necessary trash. This table is also well suited to the kitchen: the dimensions of its countertop (from 60x80 to 100x120 cm) are optimal for a table in a small kitchen.

The legs in this product are used ready-made, a set for kitchen tables with a postforming tabletop, but they are not attached here in a regular way. Regular fastening of metal detachable legs for tables - 3 pairs of screw-threaded socket for each. However, the threaded sockets for such legs sit firmly only in chipboard or dense thin-layer wood, and are easily broken out of soft coniferous wood. Therefore, the clips of the legs this table fastened with self-tapping screws 6x80 at the attachment points falling on the beam and through bolts M6x (40-45) to the boards. Washers from 30 mm in diameter are placed under the nuts of the bolts. Regular fastening pairs will be useful to a workman for something else.

What are pallets?

Let's first get acquainted with the types, device and dimensions of cargo pallets. This will be needed, firstly, to calculate the number required for this work. Secondly, for the competent development of their own design from pallets. Among the latter (see also at the end) there are those that allow you to achieve a 30-40-fold savings in money (!) And a 3-7-fold reduction in labor costs compared to typical counterparts.

Types of cargo pallets

A single-plated 2-way cargo pallet (pos. 1 and 6 in the figure) is the same age as the Egyptian pyramids. At least the first images of it are known from the time of their construction. Modern europallets (pos. 2 and 7a) are made single-plated 4-way. See below for more details. These are the ones you will most likely have to deal with.

Note:“two-way” and “four-way” in this case means the number of sling paths under the pallet deck during rigging.

2-layer 2- and 4-way pallets (pos. 7b and 7c) are produced in limited quantities for heavy concentrated or especially critical cargo and are rarely available, as well as reusable plastic (pos. 3 and 4) or metal pallets (pos. 5). Worn-out plastic pallets make a good “green” entrance to the garage (road-lawn), which costs 2-4 times cheaper than the same from a special mesh, and metal pallets, all of a sudden you have such ones, it’s best to turn them in as scrap metal - they are made mainly from aluminium.

Sufficiently accessible and applicable in amateur art work are also boards for euro pallets for valuable piece goods, pos. 8, they are made from good plywood. But don't try to rip the corner fittings out of them, they are driven into place by a machine like a big powerful furniture stapler. The whiskers of the fittings sit dead on the plywood, so it is better to just saw off its strips with fittings.

Drawings and standard sizes of euro pallets

Euro-pallets differ from traditional cargo pallets by the flooring of boards of different widths. This simple technique made it possible to increase the turnover up to 3-7 cycles under full load, subject to periodic revision. There are several standard sizes of euro pallets (on the right in the figure), in contrast to the statements in most popular sources. You will most likely come across the most popular 1200x800 pallets. The drawings of such a pallet are given on the left in the figure, from which you can calculate how many boards and pieces of timber will come out of one pallet.

Note: as a source of ornamental moldings, euro-sized pallets and domestic designs are most suitable for wood craftsmen, see fig. on right. Their advantage in this quality is boards of the same section 100x25 and all segments of timber 100x100x80 in size. It is much more convenient to work with such than with different-caliber ones.

How to make furniture from pallets?

By sawing the pallet into pieces alone, the manufacture of furniture from pallets is almost never done. Already in the simplest kitchen shelf, you need to attach boards from below, forming the actual shelves. There are enough boards on the same or the next pallet, but they must be removed from there. Further, second-hand pallets are not smoothly planed, they need to be ennobled outwardly, then firmly connected as it should and finish the finished thing. In general, the manufacture of furniture from pallets is reduced to the following operations:

  • Full (for working material) or partial (for assembly modules) dismantling of pallets, including sawing. As for sawing, there is only one piece of advice here: lay a film on the floor and carefully collect the sawdust. They will then make an excellent putty, see below;
  • At will and intention - toning of blanks, including emphasizing the texture of wood.
  • Grinding (sanding) and rough putty.
  • Assembly of blanks into a product and final puttying.
  • Finishing - painting, varnishing. We will not dwell on it, because. it is no different from that for all other wooden products.

Disassembly

If you have already worked on wood, then you should better consider pallets as a source of molding materials: from the same number of pallets, you can get much more and more valuable things in this way. Take an interest in online auctions or special resources on the prices of type-setting countertops, collars or boards (serving, chess, etc.) from boards or end cuts, see fig. Find out the prices yourself, because. a person familiar with carpentry and woodworking does not believe in such figures at a word.

Type-setting worktops and Chess board from pallets

However, first the pallets need to be disassembled, which is not easy: they are knocked down very tightly and the nails are most often corrugated. The hats are recessed into the tree, and just picking with a nail puller - you will ruin more boards and get tired yourself than you get material. That's right, quite easily and quickly, the dismantling of cargo pallets is carried out using a carpenter's ax and a 1.5-2 kg sledgehammer:

  • The ax blade is slipped a little under the board to be removed from the end, under the beam - perpendicular to the wood fibers;
  • Once or twice, not very hard, but sharply, they hit the butt of the ax with a sledgehammer so that its blade goes under the board / timber by at least 1/4 of its height;
  • Press down on the ax with your hand so that the part to be removed rises by at least 8-10 mm;
  • They upset the part to be removed with the butt of an ax (do not hit hard so that the tree does not wrinkle!);
  • If necessary, operations 1-3 are repeated until the heads of the nails come out enough to pry them off with a nail puller.

Foreign-made pallets are sometimes found fastened with self-tapping screws. It is not possible to unscrew them with an ordinary screwdriver, it is weak for this. The way out is simple: a bit suitable for this type of hardware (for a cross, a hexagon, etc.) is filled into a drill from 250 W and unscrewed by turning the tool on in reverse rotation. It is impossible to wrap hardware with a drill instead of a screwdriver: the gearbox or cams of the cartridge may break from impact at the end (in screwdrivers, collet chucks with elastic petals). But when turning out, shock loads are excluded and there is nothing to be afraid of for the tool.

Toning

Wood tinting (toning) is produced, as you know, with special compounds - stains. Staining a tree is a rather complicated process and requires precautions: working solutions and their components are toxic. However, straight-layer porous wood of pallets can be tinted with colored varnishes, diluted two to three times. Nitro-varnishes are best suited; the diluent for them must be taken appropriate, for example. 646 or 647. Tones of almost the same quality are given by water-based acrylic varnishes, they are diluted with distilled (necessarily!) Water. Oil, bituminous and oil-resin varnishes are unsuitable for tinting wood. Wood is tinted with varnishes step by step as follows:

  • Initial operations are carried out on a "hairy" tree, before sanding;
  • You need to work in the shade or in a shaded room at a moderate (up to 25 degrees) temperature;
  • If it is necessary to emphasize the fibrous texture of wood, then the part is passed along the fibers with a steel brush before impregnation;
  • The diluted varnish is applied in 1-5 layers, each subsequent one after 5-10 minutes after the previous one is completely absorbed. The brightness and saturation of the tone depends on the number of impregnations;
  • The item is dried for at least 3-5 times of complete drying of the varnish indicated on its packaging, so that the varnish dries in the surface layer of solid wood;
  • The part is ground in a rough finish with sandpaper No. 120-140 manually or with a grinder in one pass to remove splinters, burrs and rough irregularities;
  • Continue sanding with sandpaper No. 240-260 or finer. After each pass, the sawdust is blown off, removed with a barely damp rag, and the resulting texture and tone are evaluated. When the desired surface appearance is reached, grinding is stopped.

Grinding

Device for sinking nail heads - doboynik

Before grinding, especially with a grinder, you need to additionally drown the nail heads. In addition, in order for the putty (see below) to hold firmly, the holes above the fastener caps must be no smaller than 4-5 mm. Hats are sunk with the help of a special tool - a doboynik, see fig. on right. It can be made on emery from a steel bar with a diameter of 8 mm or by grinding off the tip of a bench punch. The diameter of the doboynik platform should be slightly less than the diameter of the nail head.

putty

Pallet furniture is rarely puttied, but in vain. On fig. it can be seen that the rough, but well-putty pallet furniture looks great both on the street and in the apartment, left and in the center. But the holes and pits in the tabletop on the right, which obviously cost a lot of work, are also clearly useless. Maybe this is the designer's intention, but here he definitely failed. If only because the design art is purely functional, and dirt is willingly and happily collected in the holes and crevices of the countertop.

Stained and non-sanded pallet furniture

Homemade wood putty is made from sawdust mixed with PVA or acrylic glue. The proportion is 1-3 volumes of sawdust per 1 volume of binder. Thick putty (sawdust: glue \u003d 3: 1) putty in the rough for a day or two before grinding. Without rough putty, the surface of the part from grinding will go in a wave due to the same holes and crevices. Liquid putty is rubbed until the surface of the assembled product is even before final finishing.

Assembly of modules

Pallets and parts of them are usually assembled into furniture on straight steel plates, see fig. below. But this is only due to ignorance of the basics of mechanics and strength of materials: mechanical stresses flow to the hard and rigid, in fact, point attachment points on a less solid basis, and the table or bed soon loosens, although nothing seems to have happened on them.

Assembly of furniture from pallets on steel plates

Scheme correct assembly connecting nodes of furniture from pallets are given on the next. rice. Pos. 1 - vertical angle, eg. in the bar or garden chair. Base - steel corner 50x50x2 or 60x60x2 60-70 mm wide for diagonal pairs of nails or self-tapping screws with a diameter of 4-6 mm; from its edges to the edges of the beam should be 15-20 mm. An important role is also played by pairs of hardware, driven obliquely, with a distance of 30 mm from the edges of the timber: it is they who “take away” the focus of mechanical stresses to the strongest place - to the center of the piece of timber (connecting boss of the pallet).

Joining pallet furniture assemblies

At pos. 2 shows the connection of pallets in a horizontal corner, e.g. for the table; the bottom boards (of which there are 3 in pallets) of sidewall pallets are shortened by the thickness of the tabletop pallet. It works on the same principle, from which it is clear that it is impossible to remove the upper bosses of the sidewalls (marked in red!), As is often done, they must be rearranged.

The supporting base of the pallet bed (pos. 3) is already assembled with the help of linings cut from the removed bottom boards. In addition to high strength and rigidity (the base of the bed of 8 pallets 240x200 cm in size does not require additional reinforcement), thus voluminous niches for linen boxes are obtained. On the same principle, the base of the coffee table was made from a pair of pallets (pos. 4), but for the sake of beauty, the lower pallet was cut around the perimeter to the thickness of the board (25 mm). The remains of the lower bosses with a thickness of 75 mm are sufficient with a large margin to ensure overall strength.

The middle of the underframe of a large table is always very stressed under its own weight, so the supporting structures described above are not suitable in this case. The underframe of a large, 200x120 cm, dining table made of pallets is assembled according to the principle of a spinal frame (the diagram on the right in the figure), and such a table in real life does not look heavy at all, on the left there. If niches for drawers are not required, but much greater strength is needed (a banquet table made of pallets), then the side linings can be made the same length as the middle ones and fixed in the same way. It will not work even longer and stronger, the entire length of the underframe, there are no such long boards in pallets.

Pallet table base

Countertops

Wooden countertops are traditionally rallied from boards. The process is complex, requiring production experience and special equipment. The purpose of rallying a plank board for a countertop is not only to obtain a solid surface, but also to provide strength. In a table made of pallets, all the loads are taken over by the underframe (remember, you can put up to a ton on a pallet). The next thing that is important in this case is that pallet boards are sawn very accurately.

As a result, you can make a good, even and not slit table top from a pallet with your own hands without experience and special tools, assembling it along the underframe flooring like a crate. Quite simply: the first board is nailed tightly. The next one is first nailed with small nails obliquely into the edge opposite the first board, and when the gap converges, they are fixed tightly into the face near the first board. The following boards are fastened in the same way, the surface is puttied rough, sanded and puttied clean, smeared to complete invisibility and cracks. Which are already obtained as thick as a hair.

What not to do

Nothing is perfect, and there are things that you don’t need to make from pallets. The first of them is a ladder, on the left in fig. No, no, it will turn out strong, even if a herd of elephants. But for people, the height of the steps should be 17-20 cm, and from the pallets it turns out 14 or 28. It is inconvenient to bruise the nose and abrasions on the knees.

Examples of unsuccessful use of pallets

The second is a bench like the one in the center. Maybe its manufacturer has warehouses full of chains and lanyards, but what kind of armrests are these? And the back wobbles when you lean on it. And the third is the headboard of the pallet bed. Here, sanitation and hygiene are already against: a dust collector is formed in the heads, which is difficult to clean.

Is it only furniture?

No, not only. From pallets, you can simply, quickly, inexpensively, without complex tools and experience, do many more useful things with your own hands, especially for summer cottages or at home with personal plot, see the pic below:

Useful structures from pallets

  • Vertical flower beds of various types, pos. 1-4. About flowerbeds, incl. vertical, written in other sources, but this is almost furniture, at least garden furniture. The flower shelf is also furniture.
  • Gazebo, pos. 5. In this case, an absolutely correct technical solution has been chosen: the outer pallet boards are arranged vertically. It turned out a finished crate under outer skin siding or plank boards (herringbone), and inside - cells for insulation. That is, it is possible to build a house from pallets this way.
  • Pos. 6 - can you see who is lying there at the entrance? That's right, it's a pallet dog house. And by the looks of it, you can't tell right away. The material is junk, experiment with decor as you like, you don’t need money for it.
  • Pos. 7 and 8 - the endurance of pallets is already working here. Of these, you can build as the simplest compost heap, and a real bioreactor supplying the site with humus. By applying more humate fertilizers, it is possible to obtain soil on very thin sandy loam or loam that is comparable in fertility to chernozem.

Pallet furniture, or, as they are also called, a pallet, can be called fashion trend the last few years. After all, it is very cheap, practical and at the same time comfortable and aesthetic. Do-it-yourself pallet furniture is not at all difficult to make; most projects do not require special tools or woodworking skills to bring to life. But, of course, there are some nuances in its manufacture. Stylish and practical ideas, as well as the subtleties and tricks of creating such furniture, you will find later in the article.

Security measures

First of all, we must not forget that many pallets, in order for them to serve longer, do not succumb to the influence of atmospheric factors and wood-boring insects, are treated with chemicals. Therefore, they cannot be used in residential areas, and after contact with them, you need to wash your hands. With careful processing of wood - cleaning, sanding, painting in several layers - you can neutralize their impact on human health. But only special studies will give a 100% guarantee of their safety.

note

Pallets must have an IPPC stamp - it means that the wood has been processed in accordance with sanitary standards. But this does not guarantee the absence of chemicals on its surface. You need to look for pallets with the designation HT - Heat Treated. This means that they have not undergone chemical treatment, but heat treatment, which is harmless to human health.

The EUR or EPAL marking shows that these are pallets of European origin. Moreover, the second designation is equivalent to HT, and the first is older and may suggest different types processing.

Never make furniture from pallets with the letters MB. This label stands for methyl bromide, a very strong insecticide.

The simplest pallet furniture is tables. They are very easy to make, and require only a minimal investment of time and money to make them. With just 1 pallet, a thick glass rectangle and 4 caster legs, this coffee table.

The space between the top and bottom of the wooden box can store bottles of wine, and if you fill it with boards, then smaller items will not fall to the floor.
