The 2000s were in trend. Fashion trends of the 2000s and what has become of them now. Denim jackets, skirts, trousers, overalls

Fashion zero ruthless and merciless. Everything that seemed stylish to us some ten or fifteen years ago is now terrifying. Fashion is cyclical, but we really hope that this does not apply to the trends in this list and they will perish forever in the annals of history.

Most accurately, the fashion of the 2000s can be described as a global vinaigrette of trends from different periods and countries, clothing of subcultures and aesthetics of various ethnic groups. Thanks to globalization, traditional Asian and Oriental outfits have gained popularity in Europe and America. The Internet and the first social networks allowed the aesthetics of subcultures to influence mass fashion, and the fear of environment started the ethical clothing trend.

As usual, in the early 2000s, aesthetics resembled the late 90s. A little later, fashionistas remembered the trends of the 60s, 70s and 80s, which led to a real renaissance of vintage clothing. But for all the popularity of retro styles, the early 2000s also saw a boom in "fast fashion" - inexpensive clothing from big chain stores like H&M, Zara or Topshop. "Fast fashion" echoed latest collections eminent designers, and its availability allowed buying something new every season. The American retail giant Target became famous for being the first to make collections with famous brands available to ordinary customers. In 2004H&M followed suit and joined forces with Karl Lagerfeld. The collection turned out to be an unprecedented success - women literally stood in line for hours at the entrance to the chain's stores. Collaborations between mass-market brands and designers turned out to be in the hands of both: companies found a way to imitate"high fashion" without accusations of plagiarism, and designers received an additional source of income.

But "fast fashion", which is still developing rapidly, has both supporters and critics. Especially often there are discussions around the ethics of clothing production of such companies. To make clothes as affordable as possible, and the process of making them as fast as possible, brands use the cheapest labor. Another problem is the incredible amount of industrial waste that litters the environment.

In contrast to mass rash consumerism, a trend has appeared for environmentally friendly clothes made of natural materials. Over time, this has grown into a fashion for boho-chic - a style that is largely reminiscent of hippie aesthetics. Although outfits that vaguely resemble boho-chic were worn back in the late 90s, they really started talking about this style after 2004. The main icon of this style was actress Sienna Miller, who then attended the Glastonbury rock festival in a relaxed, ethnically inspired outfit. Mandatory items of the boho-chic girl's wardrobe were faux fur vests, cowboy boots, tunics and huge baggy bags. Jewelry was necessarily made from natural materials such as metal, leather, stones or wood.

Another feature of the 2000s was the emergence of the hugely popular " It items » - specific items of clothing or accessories of certain brands. If earlier colors, silhouettes or designers were in fashion, now stylish youth have begun to literally hunt for individual things. In the mid-2000s, Juicy Couture velor tracksuits, Von Dutch caps and, of course, monogrammed Louis Vuitton bags gained cult status.

Release of the first part"Pirates of the Caribbean" provoked a surge in the popularity of clothing with nautical and military motifs. The girls wore blouses with ruffles, pants made of faux leather and jackets with epaulettes. Another manifestation of the influence of pop culture on fashion is the surge of interest in bloomers and oriental clothing. The fact is that the success of Shakira led to the popularity of belly dancing, and at the same time - and clothes in which it is convenient to perform. True, another reason for the fashion for such styles is that in the early 2000s, Bollywood films began to be shown more and more in English-speaking countries. Many American and British women began to get involved in Japanese street fashion. Although only a few of them wore full-fledged outfits inspired by Japanese subcultures, striped knee socks and Hello Kitty jewelry. Celebrities have also sometimes turned to the aesthetics of Japanese fashion, especially popularized by singer Gwen Stefani. It is worth noting that now such an interpretation of a foreign culture could pass for appropriation, because Gwen literally used a group of Japanese girls as walking accessories.

In the early 2000s, long straight hair was in fashion, sometimes with a zigzag parting. Fans of experiments braided dreadlocks or cut their hair short, imitating performers like Rihanna. Another trend was various weaves inspired by African culture. One of the main differences between 90s and 2000s makeup is the sudden popularity of lip glosses, which over the years have become more used than lipsticks. In 2002, the American company Bare Minerals entered the cosmetics market, starting a mass trend for the most natural makeup. Over time, the use of cosmetics has become much more individual - the Internet and YouTube have allowed girls to experiment, and not repeat the same schemes from magazines. However, the same can be said about fashion.

Expanding their circle of contacts with the help of social networks, people (primarily teenagers) began to focus not only on glossy magazines, but also to study foreign cultures and find new acquaintances with similar tastes. At the same time, Internet users with an unusual style have found a platform to spread their aesthetic and have the opportunity to become no less influential than big-name fashion critics. If in the 90s the taste of the average person was most often influenced by advertising or pop culture, then the 2000s were the period of equal rights in fashion.

We may be almost 20 years away from the dawn of the new millennium, but it's still strange to think of something that happened in the 2000s as historical event. However, since then there have been many changes in fashion trends, and if you are interested in remembering (learning) the trends of the "zero" years, this article will help you.

2000s fashion

Many of the clothing trends of the 2000s were born of globalization, the rise of fast fashion, and the growing influence of celebrities as style icons.

As in all decades, appearance and trends changed as the 00s wore on. So don't think that if you need to put together a look, then the 2001 tracksuit is perfect for every occasion.

The 2000s were an era of fleeting trends that gained momentum and quickly burned out. If you're building a specific image, make sure it matches the correct time period.

The beginning of the "zero" years

Technology and Y2K had a huge impact on fashion in the early 2000s. The color palette was filled with shiny black tones and reflective metallics. Some trends were worn daily, and many were designed for special occasions. Popular outfits for women include mesh tops, pleated or leather skirts, glittery trousers, and glittery shoes. But a typical men's bow of the early 2000s contains a leather jacket, a dress shirt or shoes with thick soles.

If you're looking for inspiration, look to Britney Spears or NSYNC - they were trendsetters for this type of style.

Casual and leisure wear were other important trends in the early 2000s. Denim has become a staple for both men and women. It was used for jeans, shirts, jackets, hats, etc.

When it comes to casual style for women, we think of crop tops, hooded sweatshirts, flared jeans, cargo pants, denim skirts, off-the-shoulder tops, ribbed sweaters, platform sandals, uggs or sneakers.

And the usual male look included: casual denim, cargo pants, tracksuits, polo shirts, flip flops, oxfords or sneakers.

Mid 2000s

As the decade progressed, 2000s fashion began to take on the bohemian look of the 1960s. Yoga pants, low rise jeans, hooded shirts, peasant tops, capri pants, cropped jackets, and dresses over jeans were popular choices for women's wardrobe. They were often paired with accessories such as thick belts, aviator sunglasses, rubber bracelets, neck or belt ties, ballet flats, and platform boots.

The 1960s revival look was also popular with men. Clothing options included lightweight bootcut jeans, cargo shorts, classic rock t-shirts, skinny cowboy shirts, henley shirts, upside-down polo shirts, and striped suits.

Wardrobe items such as Von Dutch baseball caps, Juicy Couture tracksuits and Louis Vuitton bags were also in trend.

Late 2000s fashion

Many of the trends from the early and mid-2000s carried over into the latter part of the decade, with a few exceptions. Women's crop tops have been replaced by tank tops, while miniskirts have given way to babydolls, balloon skirts and sweater dresses. There was also a 1980s and 1990s revival that reintroduced neon colors, animal prints, geometric shapes, lightweight denim jeggings, and acid-washed ripped jeans worn with gladiator sandals, ballerinas, and headbands. Oversized was starting to gain popularity, but it was less noticeable than in the traditional bows of the 80s.

Late 2000s menswear was a mix of 1950s and 1980s flashbacks, with letterman and black leather jackets, coats, skinny jeans, Ed Hardy T-shirts, flannel shirts and V-neck sweaters. They were often paired with dad hats, wayfarers or aviators, biker boots, Converse, Vans or sneakers. Men's suits have also been updated for the 80s to have a slimmer fit.

Styles of the 2000s

Hip-hop

In the 2000s, many rappers influenced fashion with their own clothing lines, including Jay-Z, Diddy, Nelly and 50 Cent. Many of them featured baggy jeans, long t-shirts, sweatshirts, velor suits, hooded jackets and vests paired with headbands, athletic boots, Timberland boots, and sneakers like the Adidas Superstars or Nike Air Force 1s.

Street style

Streetwear focused on branded casual wear such as jeans, T-shirts and sneakers. In the late 2000s, ripped skinny jeans, loose tops, loose or tight tracksuits, sweatpants, sweatshirts, graphic tees, vintage tees, and the Tommy Hilfiger and US Polo Assn brands were popular streetwear pieces. Sneakers were an important part of the look, especially the retro Nike Air Jordan's and Adidas Yeezys. Shoulder bags were also a popular accessory for men.

emo

Emo fashion seeped into the mainstream in the mid-2000s and became a subset of goth and punk. Outfits were often all or mostly black with skinny jeans, striped T-shirts, studded belts, and plaid Vans. No emo outfit is complete without the right hairstyle. The most common were intermittent cuts with long side-swept bangs dyed black, platinum, or bright.

Stage

Stage styles became popular at the end of the decade and were influenced by indie, rave and punk. This look often included tight black biker jeans, brightly colored T-shirts and hoodies, striped shirts, tutu dresses and skirts, and studded belts. As with emo styles, hair was an important part of the look. A popular stage hairstyle is bright neon-dyed hair cut, swept to the side and adorned with tiaras and bows.

Sport style

If you wanted to feel comfortable yet trendy in the early 2000s, all you had to do was put on your favorite tracksuit. Everyone from Britney Spears to Beyoncé and from Eminem to Diddy have followed tracksuit fashion. They were often brightly colored and adorned with rhinestone logos and lettering.

It was also popular to pair sweatpants with classic clothing and designer shoes to complete the look.

WE FOLLOW for new trends, but many of them raise a lot of questions: how livable is this? How and with what to wear crop tops, hairy sneakers, plush jackets and transparent everything? This fall, designers returned to the 2000s and brought models to the catwalk in tracksuits, ultra-low-rise trousers and fancy denim. We tell you how to apply these trends to office and everyday wardrobe.

Luxurious tracksuit

Tracksuits were worn in the 90s and 2000s, but it was in the last decade that the pages of fashion magazines were flooded with sweatpants and hoodies made of velor and velvet - the sport has never been as close to luxury as in 2005. It's easy to recreate a typical Juicy Couture look without going overboard: opt for calm colors and replace stilettos with comfortable sneakers. Elastic bands with rhinestones, bright earrings and bandanas are welcome.

Golden total bow

The 2000s became an era of flashy luxury and kitsch, when it was hardly possible to embarrass anyone with a golden total bow. Today, neat silhouettes and accessories in the spirit of the times, such as massive earrings and a velvet turban, will help to reduce the degree of pomposity - be luxurious.

Corset lacing
and a strip

You only need to think back to the early clips of Fergie or the “Lady Marmalade” video for the film “Moulin Rouge!” to imagine what a classic party outfit of that time looked like. Things with corset lacing on patent or matte leather, and today many people decide to wear them only in the evening. However, together with a striped top, over the knee boots with a small heel and an asymmetrical jacket, you will get a great option for walking or meeting with friends.

Leopard print
and fuchsia

Fuchsia flashed in all summer collections, and we suggest not to forget about it in the cold season: few colors are so refreshing and uplifting. A common technique from the late 2000s is a leopard coat, a tight-fitting electric pink dress and high-heeled shoes.

Faux fur in 2017 looks no worse than the real one, and a suitable dress can be found in any mass market. Corset slimming models are not in use today, so it is better to find a replacement for them with a free cut with an emphasis on the shoulders - colored over the knee boots and narrow sunglasses will fit perfectly into this look.

Animal print

It seems designers have never been as obsessed with animal print as they were in the 2000s. A leopard dress combined with a leopard coat and over the knee boots to match in those years would not embarrass anyone.

In 2017, we suggest abandoning verbatim quotes, but we don’t recommend forgetting about the pattern either. A delicate solution was found at Comme des Garçons - the "leopard" has never looked so modest. Neat print accessories also look great: scarves, mini bags or faux fur mittens.

Denim total bow

Denim, denim and more denim - this is the main motto of the 2000s. Seventeen years later, Marques'Almeida and Topshop are famous for everything denim, which manages to sew tops, bustiers, dresses and even underwear from this material. To replicate a total denim look, start with a triple combo of denim, top, and light-colored flares. This look is best complemented by ankle boots made of suede or with neat embroidery, as well as a sandy trench coat or a laconic woolen coat.

Black mini

Minimalism in the zero eclipsed bright colors and torn denim, but the combination of a black miniskirt, a fitted jacket and noticeable accessories like hoop earrings or logo belts flashed regularly in fashion shoots. As a top, you can choose a regular bra - a typical technique from the 2000s - which, in combination with a tightly buttoned jacket, leaves almost no hint of eroticism. Today, this image still looks fresh.

Sweater with lurex
and fancy denim

Mom will surely support this image - she definitely has your teenage photos in similar outfits. Fashion moves in waves, and by 2017, fantasy denim, through the efforts of Marques'Almeida and Gucci, has regained popularity. Add some lurex and fur to it, and a cozy look for home winter parties is ready.
