Vinyl wallpaper and silkscreen: material features. We save the family budget: how to glue silk-screened wallpaper yourself How to glue silk wallpaper

Among the variety of wallpapers, one can single out those created on a vinyl basis using silk-screen printing technology. Today it is one of the most spectacular ways of decorating walls through wallpaper. But, despite its popularity, a considerable number of people who previously preferred traditional wallpaper do not know all the advantages of this technology. In this article, we will correct the situation.

As mentioned above, this type of wallpaper material refers to vinyl. It is based on vinylized paper, which is the main unifying component of this direction of finishing materials. The most interesting thing begins further - the wallpaper is painted in a special way, a layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is applied to them, which contains silk or artificial threads that create a certain pattern and relief. Then, under high pressure, hot stamping is carried out, allowing all layers to become one. The paper or non-woven base at the same time provides the convenience of gluing wallpaper on a variety of surfaces.

Benefits of silk screen printing

  • High strength. In the manufacture of wallpaper on this basis, vinyl is used, which makes the material tear-resistant. It is much more difficult to damage such wallpapers than paper ones. high level, as well as overall durability;
  • The rolls are wide. Many types of this finishing material are rolled into rolls with a larger width, which will make the finish much more economical;
  • non-susceptibility ultraviolet radiation. Quality silk-screened wallpaper can withstand prolonged exposure sunlight without fading or being physically damaged;
  • Ease of care. Cleaning can be done with improvised means, including the wet method;
  • visual appeal. Both externally and to the touch, such wallpapers attract attention with their high design characteristics. Compared with decorative plaster, this approach is much more convenient, as it allows you to finish the walls quickly and without high qualification requirements;
  • Absence harmful substances. In case of quality materials no toxicity to humans and animals is present. Such wallpapers can be used to decorate children's rooms, as they do not have an unpleasant odor at all.

Important! When burning, such wallpapers can still release toxic substances. So it is not recommended to mount them in rooms with high chances of fires.

Flaws

One of the most important disadvantages of such wallpapers is their high price. The manufacturing method itself is more complex and costly, which affects the final cost. The consolation in this regard can be considered the fact that due to the greater width of the rolls, the number of the latter during finishing will decrease. Well, high durability, reaching 15 years or more, will allow you not to think about re-finishing for technical reasons for a long time.

Also, a big drawback can be considered the fact that the walls with such wallpaper "do not breathe." In other words, air and vapors pass through a layer of such a finish, which can lead to the formation of mold and fungus, not to mention the violation of the natural microclimate in the room. However, problems are solved by ventilation and modern devices, such as humidifiers.

The choice of wallpaper in different rooms

The versatility of wallpaper based on silkscreen allows you to use them in the most different rooms, including those with high humidity. However, when choosing, you should follow some rules:

  • In the bedroom or living room, you can choose wallpaper that is not of the highest thickness, since in these rooms they are not exposed to significant external influences;
  • In the kitchen or in the hallway, you should choose thicker wallpapers with increased moisture resistance. It is better to prefer a glossy or matte smooth surface, as a rough one will adhere to dirt more thoroughly and will be more difficult to care for.

How to hang wallpaper with silkscreen on the wall

Features of the installation of this type of wallpaper material is that many of its types have a small thickness. Therefore, in order to achieve ideal appearance indicators, it is required that the wall is as even as possible, so a lot of attention will have to be paid to this issue. Traditionally, this is done in several ways:

  • Surface grinding with sealing of all problem areas;
  • Complete wall plastering from scratch;
  • Installation wall panels such as drywall sheets.

Which method to choose depends on preferences and initial conditions. Each of them has striking features and disadvantages, and is also well described in the articles on our website.

As other stages of preparation, mention should be made of the need preliminary primer walls to achieve the best adhesion, as well as the correct selection of wallpaper adhesive, which must be specially developed for this type of finish. At the same time, there is also a separate glue with which the edges of the wallpaper are processed so that the latter do not move away over time. In addition, several rules are observed:

  • In the process of work and for the time of drying, it is required to protect the room from drafts;
  • To ensure the least visibility of the joints, it is better to start wallpapering from windows or doorways;
  • It is not the wall that is smeared with glue, but the wallpaper sheet itself, after which it must be left for several minutes for impregnation;
  • Work is best done together, otherwise it becomes problematic to control smooth installation;
  • To level the sheet and remove the air cavities formed under it, you can use a special rubber roller, with which we will iron the sheet from the center to the edges.

Conclusion

In general, silk-screened wallpapers allow you to achieve unique visual effects on the walls, making the latter really beautiful and even chic. Here it should be noted that we are talking about a high-class finish, which should also correspond to the situation in the room. Therefore too simple furniture, or mistakes in the style of the latter can cause the room to look awkward. In other words, having spent money on wallpaper, be prepared to spend money on everything else, including the services of a designer who will correctly select the components of the future interior. And of course, you need to understand that quality is the main parameter in such material, so it is better to buy such wallpapers in those places where you can be sure. Otherwise, many of the advantages described above may not be relevant.

In this material we will talk about wallpaper with the name silkscreen and how to stick it on the walls. Such material looks very beautiful on the walls in apartments and houses. Like any material, screen printing has its pros and cons, but appearance so rich that it distinguishes such wallpapers from other types.

The pasting process has several rules, so it is important to know how to glue silkscreen wallpaper yourself and correctly.

Types and technology of production

The basis for such material is paper. In the process of creating a canvas, the vinyl coating is dyed, after which it is heated and embossed.

The technology allows you to get thin wallpaper for walls, and vinyl, due to its smoothness, resembles the structure of silk.

This coating is made of two layers:

  1. Polyvinyl.
  2. Paper.

Due to the fact that both materials are perfectly combined with each other and can be embossed, the canvas receives high strength, despite the thinness. Silk-screen printing does not use silk fibers, and the structure of the canvas can be different:

  1. By thickness.
  2. By invoice.
  3. By color scheme.

It is necessary to select one or another type of coating depending on the room in which the pasting will be carried out. For a hallway or kitchen, it is better to choose a thicker coating; for bedrooms, a thinner coating is suitable, but with an unusual color or pattern, depending on the design.

Advantages and disadvantages

Any material has positive and negative sides. Silk-screen printing is no exception, and in the table you can find the main characteristics:

AdvantagesFlaws
1 Environmentally friendly material.For pasting, the surface must be perfect, which means that you need to carefully prepare the walls and eliminate even the slightest flaws.
2 There are no foreign smells.The high cost of paintings compared to other wallpapers.
3 The cover is easy to care for. Wallpaper can be washed and brushed.Due to their structure, they do not "breathe".
4 Resistant to sunbeams, do not fade, the color does not lose its colors.
5 Very large selection of screen printing.
6 High operational terms from 10 to 20 years.

When choosing a coating, it is necessary to take into account the density and thickness of the vinyl, as well as the width of the canvas.

On sale you can see silk-screen printing with a width of 3 m. A similar material is used for horizontal gluing on walls so that there is a minimum number of seams.

Preparatory work

Coat the walls with a deep penetration primer

Foundation preparation is a very important stage, it must be treated scrupulously. For this you need:

  1. Remove old coating.
  2. Remove dirt, dust, stains and plaster that falls off the walls, as well as flexible, if any.
  3. Next, an inspection is carried out for evenness. If there are holes or bulges, then they will need to be repaired with putty. Starting and finishing mixture is used. After applying the starting solution and drying it, the surface should be sanded and the finishing layer should be applied. The walls are left for a day to dry.
  4. After a day, the treated areas are polished with sandpaper to make the surface smooth.
  5. The walls are primed with a deep penetration mixture and the wallpaper can be glued.

To securely fix the silkscreen to the wall, use special adhesive compositions. If such a composition could not be found, then glue for heavy canvases is used. It will need to be diluted according to the instructions on the package. For information on how to properly prepare the walls for work, see this video:

It is necessary to paste over the room after it has been thoroughly washed and ventilated. At the time of gluing, there should be no draft in the room.

Pasting rules

Start pasting from the window

Silkscreen wallpaper for walls is glued using the following technology:

  1. Initially, you need to measure the height of the room in which the work is carried out, after which the dimensions are transferred to the canvas and the necessary pieces are cut. Each strip of wallpaper should be added a couple of centimeters at the top and bottom. Thanks to this, sticking the canvas will be easier.
  2. If the wallpaper shows a picture, then you need to follow its step. The process of working with such material is quite complicated, so silk-screen printing with a pattern should be glued by a specialist.
  3. Pasting is carried out from the window and ends at doorway. This allows you to hide the seams between the wallpaper.
  4. Next, you need to make glue. To do this, the dry mixture is diluted in warm water.
  5. Using a brush, glue is applied to the wallpaper and the strip is left for 15 minutes to absorb the adhesive composition.
  6. When the canvas absorbs the glue, it should be pressed down on top of the wall and pressed down. It is necessary to ensure that the strip goes a little to the ceiling.
  7. The glued strip should be rolled out with a rubber roller. Work is carried out from the center and is carried out to the edges.
  8. The next strip is glued by analogy. The entire coating should be glued exclusively end-to-end. An overview of wallpaper with silkscreen, see this video:

The overlap of the joints should be very small

Before pasting, paint over the wall behind the radiators, because due to heat, the silkscreen wallpaper may lag behind. Separately, it is worth mentioning the corner joints. The strip of wallpaper should be cut so long that it just overlaps the second wall and is perpendicular to the previous wall.

The other strip must be connected to the previous one. The main thing is to work carefully. With the help of a plumb line, it will be possible to glue the canvases clearly vertically. To do this, a ruler is applied at an angle where a pair of wallpaper strips are overlapped, and then the excess is cut off with a sharp blade or knife.

When pasting places near sockets and switches, you will need to initially paste over the entire surface of the mounting holes, and then make holes in the wallpaper with a blade. Only after that you can bend the edges inward and install switches and sockets.

For the highest quality gluing, it is allowed to apply glue not only on the canvas, but also on the walls. Then pasting will be carried out easier and faster.

Features of work

Patterns on light wallpapers are more noticeable than on dark ones.

Since silk-screen printing is a material on a vinyl base, all work with them can be carried out by analogy with ordinary vinyl wallpaper. If necessary, they can be painted, and for this, acrylic enamels are used, but only on a latex basis.

Light colored paint is often used colors, in this case, embossing, dark colors will be noticeable on the wall this effect cannot create.

Masters advise initially to carry out test staining on small area wallpaper, in a place that is not visible to the eyes. After that, look at the reaction of the canvas, as well as evaluate the type of paint on the material.

After studying the information of the article, you can independently paste over the wallpaper in your apartment. The main thing is to carefully prepare the surface and do everything carefully. Silk-screen printing dries quickly enough, if you paste the wallpaper in the morning, then in the evening they will be dry, they can be shown to friends and relatives.

Silk-screen printing is a special type of wallpaper that becomes a real decoration of the interior. These wallpapers are very beautiful, pleasant to the touch. Not every House master knows how to glue silkscreen wallpaper. Let's talk about some of the features.

Any work must begin with preparation. Wallpapering was no exception.

First, thoroughly clean the walls. Your task is to remove old wallpaper, and, if necessary, clean the walls of dust, dirt and mold. This is a very important stage, because otherwise the work will be done poorly.

Secondly, the walls must be made even. The fact is that silkscreen is a very thin wallpaper. If the walls in your apartment are fairly even, you can limit yourself to one thin layer of putty. If there are significant irregularities, you need to apply first a layer of starting, and then another layer of finishing putty.

Thirdly, after the putty has dried, in both cases, it is necessary to cover the walls with a deep penetration primer. It will help to make the walls perfect, besides, it will allow the wallpaper to better adhere to the surface.

In order to stick wallpaper, you need, first of all, to buy a special glue. On the package with glue it is written what kind of wallpaper it is intended for. By the way, you should also study the instructions that come with each wallpaper roll - it contains recommendations for choosing an adhesive.

For work, you need rollers. It's great if you can buy both rubber and fur rollers. You also need a glue brush. Of course, the wallpaper cannot be cut without a knife and scissors, but you need to measure them with a tape measure. Lastly, don't forget to bring a clean tissue or just a soft, clean cloth.

Now you can get to work. First you need to cut the wallpaper into pieces. If you bought plain wallpaper, you won't have a problem. However, the vast majority of silk-screened wallpapers are made with a pattern, so you will have to follow the pattern step exactly (this value is usually indicated in the instructions or you will have to measure it yourself).

Using a tape measure, measure the height of the walls and add 4 cm to this value - the resulting number will be the length of one piece. Unfold two rolls on the floor or on the table at once, laying them side by side, pick up the pattern and cut it off. WITH reverse side piece of wallpaper, mark where the top is, and where the bottom is, and fold all the prepared pieces face down into a pile.

Finally, you can proceed directly to wallpapering. First you need to smear the wallpaper with glue. Use a fur roller to apply glue to a piece of wallpaper and leave for 10 minutes (unless otherwise indicated in the instructions) - during this time the wallpaper can be saturated with glue.

You need to start gluing wallpaper from the window. The first piece is glued along the slope. Remember that a layer of glue should also be applied to the wall. The corner is sealed with a separate piece. Important: carefully check the evenness of the gluing using a level.

When you move to another wall, you need to draw a vertical line with a pencil, noting the width of the piece. The fabrics are glued together. In order for the wallpaper to lay flat, use a rubber roller. Make movements from the middle to the edge - this way you can remove all air bubbles and wrinkles. Don't press too hard or you risk damaging the canvas. After a piece of wallpaper is pasted, go over the edges with a cloth in order to remove excess glue.

In order to tightly glue the wallpaper at the top and cut off the excess part, put a spatula (it should be wide) and run a knife along it. After that, firmly press the edges of the wallpaper. By the way, the same method is used when you glue the wallpaper under the window. The knife must be very sharp. Otherwise, it will just crumple the wallpaper and spoil it.

In order not to run into problems when gluing this type of wallpaper, such as silk-screen printing, make sure that they are of high quality. Unscrupulous manufacturers of these products save on the top coat, make it inelastic, as a result of which it is poorly moistened. In such panels, the edges are wrapped inward and do not stick to the wall. The base and top coat of high-quality wallpaper react equally to moisture and mechanical stress.

In order not to run into problems when gluing this type of wallpaper, such as silk-screen printing, make sure that they are of high quality. Our article will tell you about silkscreen wallpaper - how to glue to make it work. So if you want to finish and refurbish country house passed on high professional level listen to our advice.

Unscrupulous manufacturers of these products, who are alien to modern construction technologies, save on the top coating, make it inelastic, as a result of which it is poorly moistened. In such panels, the edges are wrapped inward and do not stick to the wall. The base and top coat of high-quality wallpaper react equally to moisture and mechanical stress.

You will need:
- putty (vetonit putty is well suited, the consumption of which is low);
- primer;
- glue;
- putty knife;
- roller;
- stationery knife;
- glue for seams.

Instruction:
1 Before sticking any type of wallpaper, the walls must be carefully prepared - leveled, puttied and primed. On the prepared surface, the canvas lies evenly and does not bubble.

2 It is customary to glue the wallpaper in the direction from the window to the door - so the joints are not visible if there is a slight overlap. Check the verticality of the corner at the wall adjacent to the wall with the window using a plumb bob. If it is perfectly even, then you can start gluing, but if you notice any deviation from the perpendicular position, then mark the plumb line with a pencil and carry out this procedure when gluing each subsequent panel.

3 Then attach a sheet of wallpaper to the corner or to the plumb line and mark the desired length.

4 Cut a piece and grease it with glue. Choose glue for heavy wallpaper and depending on what basis your wallpaper is made of.
5 Then fold the edges of the smeared cloth towards the middle and let it soak for five to ten minutes.
6 After that, attach a sheet of wallpaper to the wall with its edge to the corner or to the plumb line and gradually smooth it with a special roller or spatula in the direction from the center to the edges.

7 The next step is to seal the gap from the corner of the wall to the window. To do this, measure the required length and width of the wallpaper. Make sure that the edge of the canvas, close to the window, is vertical, and the opposite edge, if necessary, can be overlapped and trimmed. Pay attention to the fact that the pattern on the wallpaper matches.

8 Cut off the second piece of wallpaper, coat it with glue and let it soak.

9 Then attach its corner joint to the joint with the already glued canvas and distribute it so that the edge at the window is even.

10 Smooth out the wallpaper with a spatula or roller. If the second edge of the new piece of wallpaper overlaps with the adjacent one, then take a clerical knife and draw a straight vertical line along the ruler, cutting through both canvases, and remove the excess trim.

11 Then continue to glue the wallpaper butt to butt in the direction away from the window, following the pattern. To ensure that the edges of the wallpaper do not move away, you can use special glue for the seams and make a newspaper backing.

Vinyl wallpapers, which are simply called "washable" by the people, can be a fairly reliable imitation of many different materials, among which are all kinds of plasters, and textiles, and so on. These covers can be washed and are strong and durable. Speaking of water resistance, it should be noted that all types of vinyl wallpaper are water resistant to one degree or another. These advantages of vinyl wallpaper make it possible to paste them over rooms where wet cleaning is often carried out and detergents are used.

The disadvantage of vinyl wallpaper, like other synthetic materials, is their poor breathability.

However, today many firms produce vinyl wallpapers in which moisture exchange is allowed due to micropores. Such wallpapers, as usual, have two layers in their composition. Most bottom layer, as a rule, non-woven or paper.

The bottom layer is covered with a very thin layer of polyvinyl chloride, while a pattern or various embossing is applied to the outer surface of the wallpaper. The PVC layer itself will protect the wallpaper from light, moisture and mechanical damage. Manufacturers of these wallpapers impregnate them with specialized compounds. They do not allow the formation of mold and fungi under the vinyl wallpaper.

The process of pasting vinyl wallpaper has its own characteristics. The base, which absorbs moisture, needs to be pre-painted with primers, or pasted with waste paper.

Vinyl wallpapers are divided into groups: foamed vinyl, where the texture stands out brightly, very dense wallpapers and wallpapers that have a smooth surface. Among the varieties of vinyl wallpaper, "silk-screen printing" stands out, as well as foamed wallpaper, which is intended for painting.

"Silkscreen" - provides the widest possibilities for a variety of design solutions. They have a great gradation of brilliance. Such wallpapers are developed on the basis of vinylized paper, which is dyed in a complex technology. The "silkscreen" range can have a different thickness of the vinyl layer, as well as different patterns.

Thick vinyl wallpapers are characterized by high strength and special resistance to sunlight, moisture, and detergents.

It's in the bedroom paper wallpaper will last a long time, as it maintains the optimal temperature regime.

Acrylic wallpapers are similar in composition to paper ones, but they have improved the structure of the front side. Polymer coating gives the surface moisture resistance and wear resistance. Features of modern wallpaper

New generations of finishing materials include non-woven wallpaper in their list. The non-woven material used for tailoring has become the basis for applying the vinyl layer. It is also used without an additional top layer, as a full-fledged finishing material for walls.

The advantages of such a base are appreciated by consumers: the width of the roll is increased to 1 meter, there is no shrinkage in width, there are no deformations. The air permeability of the surface depends on the front layer: if it consists of vinyl, it is less compared to a non-woven structure only. The sticker can be easily carried out by 1 person, since it is enough to smear only the wall with glue. Next, the deployed roll is applied to the wall, starting from the ceiling.

Preparing walls for screen printing

It is only possible to glue wallpaper with silk-screen printing ideally on smooth and well prepared walls. If walls need preparation, then for this you need a set of tools and materials:

  • spatulas;
  • putty mixes (starting, finishing);
  • deep penetration primers;
  • fine-grained sandpaper.

The surface of the walls is cleaned of dirty layers, greasy spots, mold, fragile peeling fragments, old wallpaper and putty. The wall is primed then a layer of starting putty is applied with a spatula, when it dries, it is cleaned with sandpaper from roughness and primed again. After the primer has dried, a thin layer of finishing putty is applied. After drying, cleaning is done with fine sandpaper and dust is removed. After successively carrying out the above operations, the wall surface is ready for wallpapering with silk-screen printing.

How to glue silkscreen wallpaper

Before gluing wallpaper silkscreen, the walls of the room are measured for vertical and horizontal deviations. In the room, according to the advice of professionals, the starting strip of wallpaper is glued to the left of the window. With the help of a plumb line, a vertical line is drawn, which serves as a kind of standard by which the canvas is leveled. Subsequent strips of wallpaper are glued further in a counterclockwise direction. When pasting wallpaper silkscreen it is very important to avoid drafts doors and windows are closed indoors.

The wallpapering process will require the preparation and availability of such materials:

  • ruler or tape measure;
  • wallpaper glue especially for heavy wallpaper or silk-screen printing;
  • scissors;
  • pencil;
  • brush;
  • pieces of clean and dry cloth;
  • rubber roller.

Where to start the process of gluing the first strip of silk-screened wallpaper

It is necessary to follow the instructions for wallpapering walls, if they are attached to the rolls. and its preparation for work guarantee half the success in pasting the walls of the room with silk-screen printing. A roll of wallpaper is rolled out on a clean, dry and even surface, usually the floor. The length of the first sheet is measured along the height of the wall and cut off with a margin along the upper and lower edges and smeared with prepared glue. Silk-screen wallpaper adhesive is distributed evenly over the entire length of the cut wallpaper and left for 10 minutes to soak. The surface of the wall is also covered with a thin layer of glue.
