Five days ago, Riot Games announced an exciting new feature called Mastery of Champions. The purpose of this system is to show the process of improving each player's game on a particular champion. In addition, the teamwork of the players will also improve, since it is for this that precious points will be awarded. But first things first.

Mastery of Champions

What is Champion Mastery?

The Mastery system is designed to determine the amount of power that a player puts into a particular champion, and also uses a specific system to measure the level of mastery of him. When a player wins a game, he receives a certain amount of Champion Points (CP) and then some kind of reward. The number of points earned directly depends on the performance of the team.

Champion Mastery Unlock

Your Summoner level must be above 5 to participate in this program.

Initially, all champions have the first level of Mastery, as well as 0 SP. Once you start playing and earning SP, you will be able to earn ranks and unlock rewards that will vary based on your current rank. In your profile you will be able to see:

  • Three best champions;
  • Skill sum (total number of levels on all champions);
  • Champions that are close to Mastery level.

At the moment, the introduction of the system is planned only for Regular games on the Summoner's Rift map.

Champion Points

Champion Points are earned by playing as a specific champion. Earning these Points will give you the ability to level up your Mastery on that champion and be rewarded once you level up. Champion points directly depend on both your personal performance and the performance of your team. You will be able to see the number of Champion Points earned in the post-match results.

It is also worth noting that you will get a lot more Champion Points if you play with friends. The more friends you have on the team, the more points you earn. For example, if there are five of you, then you will get 50% more SP than if you played alone.

Ratings

After the game is over, you will be able to find out the score you got on a particular champion in that game. This score is given to you by the Mastery system. The score depends entirely on your performance, as well as the role you played.

Depending on what level of Mastery the player will have, he will be able to receive a certain reward. It is worth noting that promotions will only start at the fourth level of Mastery:

If you can unlock this reward, you will see a new frame for your loading screen. The displayed Mastery rank will only be visible to the players on your team.

Stop dying typing messages in chat. Emotes allow you to react to what is happening in real time with a set of in-game icons. To celebrate the launch, every player will receive a free thumbs up emote!


To get started, select the desired emotions in section "Collection".


You can place up to five emotes on the emotes wheel. In addition, there are two additional cells. Emote from the first is automatically played at the beginning of the game, and from the second - in case of victory. This way you don't have to guess the timing to show the emote just before the nexus is destroyed.

The standard key for calling the wheel of emotions in the game is T, but you can choose any other (this will be especially useful for Lee Sin players).

And if you feel like a chair is about to catch fire under you, you can turn off the emotes of specific players in the score window. In addition, we have added the "Hide all enemy emotes" option to the game settings. And if you take damage from a champion while showing an emote, the animation will immediately stop, and the emote itself will go on cooldown.

In the future, each emote can be purchased for 450RP, but to celebrate the launch, we're running a sale during which they'll be available at a discounted price - 350RP. In addition, the store will have " starter kit emotions" - a set of five emotions, one of which will be exclusive. The cost of the set is 975RP. Discounts and a set will disappear from the store November 7, 2017 at 10:59 am Moscow time.

I will talk about spells, because this is my path. Take, for example, projectiles - one of the most complex types of effects. Most projectiles are made up of three elements: the creation effect, the projectile itself, and the hit effect.

Consider the base projectile:

As you can see, it is very simple, but conveys the most important information: direction. The main concentric circles move in the direction in which the projectile will be fired and enhance its readability, while the sparks add style to the effect and also indicate its direction.

The projectile is the most important part of the effect. The player will either dodge it or get hurt. It should look like this so that it is clear what kind of object it is: Nidalee's spear, which will take away half the health, or Elise's cocoon, which will not deal damage, but stun. Things get more complicated when you add character images to it. The visuals need to read but also convey the mood of the character, which is quite tricky given how many characters and costumes there are in the game.

The main point (Hot Point) is the most important. This is the part of the projectile that you need to dodge. It must be visible, clearly defined and easy to read. It should not diverge from the hitbox, because then the players will not be able to dodge it.

The next part is the trail. It is very important because it shows the direction. There are also minor elements, they change depending on the image. For example, if it is an image of the Project, then there will be digital squares or sparks. In Star Guardians, stars and glitter meet. Secondary elements remain on the screen a little longer than the trace.

Finally, there are glow and shadow. A logical question: "Why do you need a shadow when you shoot a bright star?". The shadow is needed to enhance the glow. On a dark background, it appears brighter.

The hit effect usually occurs when the projectile's hitbox collides with an enemy character.

I have divided it into several parts. The first and most important is the moment of impact. It should be very short (about one tenth of a second) and attract the attention of the player: the projectile hit! Then the glow disappears and only the effects remain. In this case, the highlight disappears almost at the same rate as the glow. After it, the sparks disappear, and only bokeh points remain.

Process of creation

I usually do everything in Unity as I mostly use particles and shader effects. For textures I use Photoshop, for meshes I use Maya. I create particles in Shuriken's built-in particle system.

As a rule, I start creating an effect with its simplified version. If it's a projectile, I create a new particle system, set the basic shape they should spawn from, and the color. After that, only refinement remains. I add and remove parts of the effect depending on what I need: if I need a highlight, I create a particle system that renders one highlight. If I need a footprint, I add it and load the texture. If none of the existing textures fit, I create a new one and use trial and error to bring it to the ideal state.

I paint all the textures in Photoshop. I'm not a very good artist, so I rely on simple textures. Here are some examples:

Most of them are black and white because it makes it easier for me to control the color of the particle. If I suddenly want to change its color, I don't have to start Photoshop again. I can do this directly in Unity using the Color over Lifetime value.

Animation

There are three ways to animate visual effects. Most often, I do this through particle systems, specifying changes in their values.

For example, the Start Speed ​​parameter gives the particle momentum. If it is equal to 20, then the particle will move at a speed of 20 units per second. If you add Velocity over Lifetime, then you can control the speed of the particle. Limit Velocity over Lifetime allows you to make the particle seem to slow down due to friction.

Color over Lifetime changes the color of the particle. Let's say if you add an alpha layer gradient that looks like 0 - 0.5 - 0, then the particle will first be invisible, then it will gradually appear, reach a transparency of 0.5, and eventually disappear.

Another way to animate is with animated shaders, like this one:

They allow you to create a complex movement. This is useful for shock waves, beams, and many other things. I often use them in conjunction with particle systems through particle meshes. To do this, I create a single mesh particle and animate it using the particle values. This is much easier than using the timeline and creating an additional animation file.

Finally, there is the traditional mesh animation. It is sometimes used in conjunction with the previous method, which leads to interesting effects.

Reusing materials and textures

When you just start your career, you have no experience, and you have to create everything from scratch. But over time, your library grows. One sheaf of sparks can be used as the starting point for most of these effects. You just change the values ​​of speed, colors and so on. Same with textures: when you have a dozen good noise textures, there is no need to create a new one. You can choose the most suitable and adapt a little.

This is useful if you always work with the same engine. But if you have to switch, say, between Unreal Engine 4 and Unity, then everything becomes more complicated. Most of the materials for one engine cannot be used in another. But textures are possible.

Do I need to know how to program to work in this field?

Yes and no.

A visual effects artist is a very broad concept. For me, this is someone who creates magic, literally and figuratively. There are artists who create stylized spells and effects, like me, there are those who specialize in realistic environment effects, someone creates shaders, someone creates particles, and so on. In some areas, programming is practically not necessary, in others it is the other way around.

I haven't written a single line of code in my entire career. We have all necessary tools, and if the code is still needed, then programmers write it. In any case, it is important to at least understand how programs and games work. Your job may not be like programming, but it is very code dependent.

How to organize work

I can only speak about Unity. The only plugin I use is ShaderForge, a shader generator. It allows me to create simple and complex shaders without having to write code. All you need is logic. There are a huge number of training videos on the Internet on it, I also recommend official tutorials.

If you want to start a career in VFX, there is only one thing I strongly advise: references. This is the most important thing. If you want to create something, you can, of course, start from scratch. But you are unlikely to succeed, unless you are incredibly talented. When you want to create an effect, explore it first. Play games, watch anime, movies, pictures, stuff like that. An example of any effect can be found in a couple of minutes. Use it.

Another important thing is to ask people's opinions about your work. When I first started, I had no idea that there were groups of people who shared experience with each other for free. For example, RTVFX. Go there, ask questions, ask for ratings. This is a great community, always ready to help. You can also find many resources and references there. Reviews are progress, don't be afraid to ask people to rate your work.

Write

"X" is a normal attack. The key is practically not used.

"Q", "W", "E", "R" - the use of skills (from left to right). Primary keys for using all skills.

"Alt + Q", "Alt + W", "Alt + E", "Alt + R" - increase the skill level (from left to right). At first, skills can be increased using the mouse, but with increasing skill, it is best to do this using the keyboard.

"D" - the first additional (sumoner) spell. Like skills, spells must be learned using the keyboard.

"F" - the second additional (sumoner) spell. Like skills, spells must be learned using the keyboard.

"A" - attack the first target that comes into the champion's field of view. Very handy when you're chasing an enemy trying to hide in the bushes. If an enemy champion tries to trick you and change direction abruptly, your champion will still attack him as soon as he sees him.

"S" - champion stop.

"H" - (hold). While the button is pressed, the champion stands still and does nothing. This is mainly used during the swing, so as not to attack the minions unnecessarily, but to make effective attacks in order to finish off.

"1 - 6" - inventory slots. In League of Legends, there are many items that not only provide various bonuses, but can be used during combat. Well, of course, the fastest way to use them is with the keyboard.

"B" - when used, your champion starts teleporting to the base.

"Z" - chat history.

"M" - opening a large location map.

"Arrows" - move the camera. It is better to immediately forget about these keys and not use them.

"C" - character characteristic.

"P" - open a store. Of course, if you are far from the store, then you won’t be able to buy items, but you can see the price of an item.

"Tab" - shows the statistics of the match.

"G", "Alt + Left click" - mark on the map. Used very often to show your allies some key places on the map or to indicate to the allies that the enemy hero has left your lane.

"Alt + Left click on the champion" - focus mark. Used in large fights to point out a specific enemy hero. Also often used to draw the attention of your allies to a certain hero.

"Y" - fix the camera. It is best not to use this feature.

"Space" - centering the camera on your champion. In some cases, it can help, but as a rule, a competent player always keeps his hero in sight.

"F1 - F5" - Center the camera on your champion or ally's champion.

"L" - turn on / off the display of minions' health. To be honest, the health of minions is always better to see, in order to finish them off in time.

"Shift + L" - turn on / off the display of champions' health.

"Ctrl+F" - enable/disable FPS display.

In addition to hotkeys in League of Legends, there are a number of commands that are used in chat. These are mainly commands for negotiating with other players, but there are also a few commands for controlling your champion's emotions.

First, let's look at the basic chat commands. Be sure to pay attention to the "/" character, which is placed before all commands.

Enter - opens the chat. Next comes the message. Pressing "enter" again sends the message. Be careful when sending a message, as you can accidentally press "enter" and then use hotkeys, but they will not work, but the message will be typed in the chat. It is also worth remembering that when sending a message in this way, only your allies will see it. To send a message to all participants, a specific key combination is used, described below.

/Help - list of commands and their description

/all or "Shift + Enter" - opens the chat, but the message is written for all participants. After typing the message, you just need to press "enter" to send the message.
