Kitchen vinyl. Wallpaper vinyl for the kitchen. Silkscreen - the most beautiful type of vinyl

Repair in the kitchen is not an easy task, which not only requires a lot of effort, time and money, but also makes you approach the choice of wallpaper with special responsibility. Often preference is given to vinyl, as an affordable, beautiful and durable material. But a new question immediately arises: “Which vinyl wallpapers choose for the kitchen? - after all, they differ not only in color and texture, but also in the type of base and outer layer. On the picture interesting wallpapers stripes in the kitchen.

Wallpaper production technologies do not stand still, not only constantly expanding the lineup, but also creating strong, wear-resistant and reliable Construction Materials. Polyvinyl chloride - the outer layer - protects against the harmful effects of sunlight, preventing paints from fading, is not afraid of pollution and moisture. But this material is synthetic, and therefore cheap wallpaper can have an unpleasant odor and low air permeability, which contributes to the occurrence of fungus. But it looks great in the interior, an example in the photo below:

Important! When choosing wallpaper for the kitchen, you should pay great attention to the presence of a special impregnation that prevents the appearance of mold and mildew.

What are vinyl wallpapers

Vinyl wallpaper has two layers - bottom and top. bottom layer usually made of paper, fabric or non-woven, the top is made of polyvinyl chloride, a durable material on which a decorating pattern or textured embossing is applied. Almost all types of vinyl wallpaper are perfect for a kitchen or bathroom, due to their practicality.

Structural vinyl

Wallpaper with a loose three-dimensional structure, soft and rough to the touch, all kinds of patterns and colors. Ideal for pasting uneven walls - voluminous wallpaper will easily hide cracks, potholes and bulges, and smooth them out.

They are made as follows: the vinyl mass is applied to a paper or non-woven base and heat-treated, due to which the coating foams and becomes textured. The only drawback is the low strength and the fact that they can hardly be called washable (they can be gently wiped with a damp sponge, without the use of cleaning products), which is why this species non-woven wallpaper for the kitchen is not suitable. The photo shows a variant of the pattern of vinyl wallpaper.

Vinyl for painting

These wallpapers are perfect for those who quickly get tired of the monotony in the interior, because they can be repainted. For this, it is recommended to use water-based paint, which is applied with a roller over two layers of primer. However, if you repaint too often, the terrain will begin to smooth out, which will require complete replacement wallpaper.

There are many interesting painting methods that allow you to create original wall decor in the kitchen. Like, for example, applying paint to the bottom non-woven layer. With this method of painting, a colored background will appear, and the protruding parts will retain their original appearance. There is another popular way: the paint is highly diluted and applied to the front, and then washed with a soft cloth. Then the background will remain saturated and bright, and the protruding parts will acquire a light shade. An example in the photo.

Compact vinyl

An extremely dense and durable material called compact vinyl. It does not have a particularly pronounced texture and is essentially flat. Created by hot pressing polyvinyl chloride. The embossing and dyeing processes are carried out in several stages.

Compact Vinyl resists moisture and is extremely resistant to even harsh brushing, making it an excellent washable material for the kitchen. In addition, it has a wide range of various colors, including various ornaments, stylizations for other materials, such as stone, ceramic tiles, plaster, leather. Thanks to this, using vinyl wallpaper, you can create a unique and inimitable design in the kitchen, as shown in the photo below.

kitchen vinyl

The super-washable material is dirt-repellent and moisture-resistant thanks to the rubberized top layer. It is absolutely not afraid of water, grease and is perfectly cleaned even with a stiff brush. This type of vinyl wallpaper has been developed for kitchens and bathrooms, making it a great alternative to ceramic tiles. They can even paste over an apron and not worry about its appearance. They are quite dense and thick, which makes them look rough, and also have a not so wide choice of colors, the main part of which is gastronomic prints.

silkscreen

Otherwise called satin wallpaper is a type of hot pressed vinyl. The bottom layer is vinylized paper dyed in a special way, which has gone through heat treatment and a strong press. The frequently encountered information that natural silk threads are used in the manufacture of this finishing material is not true. Looks good in the interior on the walls. Pay attention to the photo.

The effect of a silk surface is achieved through a special processing method. Since screen printing does not have a three-dimensional relief, it is better to use it when pasting well-aligned walls. This type of wallpaper can be a wonderful decoration of the kitchen, as well as practical, because it is washable.

hard vinyl

Purified from harmful substances and formaldehyde resins by evaporation, vinyl is considered an anti-allergic and safe finishing material. This type of washable wallpaper is very reliable and resistant to harmful sunlight and mechanical damage, which allows the use of detergents when cleaning them. The base is made of three-layer paper, thanks to which they not only do not stretch, but also ensure the removal of excess moisture from the walls, and at the same time do not swell. Solid vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen will be an excellent option, and its stunning imitation of absolutely any coating (plaster, stone, textiles, etc.) will allow you to create an extraordinary design. Take a look at the photo:

Which base is better

Paper is in many ways inferior to non-woven, such wallpapers are an order of magnitude lower. But before you make a choice, you should understand all the pros and cons and find out if the differences are so great.

paper base

The most popular. It can be two- or three-layer, which has a positive effect on its qualities. And the vinyl coating, reliable in itself, complements and enhances its properties, and also partially covers the disadvantages.

Pros of paper base:

  • low price;
  • good breathability. Vinyl wallpapers are often accused of not "breathing", but this is not entirely true. Paper has a porous structure, due to which it is remarkably ventilated.

Disadvantages of paper base:

  • it is not recommended to use in rooms with frequent temperature changes and high humidity, since in such conditions the wallpaper may move away from the walls. However, it is worth noting that the three-layer paper base is also suitable for pasting the kitchen;
  • pasting process. Unlike non-woven, paper is glued to the wall a little more difficult, since glue must be applied to the inner surface of the wallpaper sheet, and not to the wall.

non-woven base

An increasingly popular semi-synthetic non-woven material based on cellulose fibers. It is for its stability and ability to hold its shape for a long time that non-woven wallpaper is in such demand. Yes, they look fresh and interesting on the walls (photo).

Advantages of non-woven fabric:

  • ease of sticking. During installation, the wall is smeared with glue, and not the wallpaper sheets, due to which they remain dry and, therefore, are much easier to glue;
  • keeping the shape. The non-woven base does not deform over time and does not move apart during the gluing process. Therefore, they are recommended for use in new homes whose walls tend to shrink;
  • defect masking. Before pasting the walls with wallpaper on non-woven, leveling the surface is not required - the wallpaper will hide all the bumps and cracks.

Cons of interlining:

  • high price. This material is not produced in Russia, so ready-made wallpaper rolls or materials for production are imported from other countries, which significantly affects the cost of wallpaper.

How to choose vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen

With such a wide variety finishing materials and their colors are very difficult to decide on the choice. Washable vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen is easier to choose according to special markings, which is shown in the photo:

You should also pay great attention when choosing and the smell of wallpaper. If the roll smells like acetone or upper layer oily, then these are alarming signs, and it is not necessary to choose such materials, respectively. Ideally, vinyl has a dry surface.

Advice! The best vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen are hard washable non-woven backing. They are resistant to frequent cleaning with detergents, abrasion, high humidity, temperature changes. They also do not fade in the sun, have good sound insulation, perfectly hide all the imperfections of the wall, do not emit harmful substances and fungus does not form under them, due to their breathability. They can easily last more than 10 years and change little in appearance.

The huge selection of wall materials of various colors, textures and compositions on the market can confuse anyone. But if you study well the special properties of each type, then you can easily find the perfect vinyl wallpaper for your kitchen.

The quality of vinyl wallpaper depends on the thickness of the vinyl film. Branded "vinyl" is durable, non-staining, does not fade in the sun, is not afraid of moisture, tolerates wet cleaning and even brushing with detergents. This type of wall decoration, without loss of decorativeness and performance, can last up to 10 years or more! The only significant drawback of vinyl wallpaper is airtightness. However, a number of leading manufacturers of finishing materials have already introduced innovative vinyl wallpapers with micropores on the market, which allow the walls to "breathe": allowing condensate to evaporate from under the coating, they simultaneously prevent moisture from penetrating under the wallpaper.

Choosing vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen

Structural wallpaper based on foamed vinyl

Foamed vinyl has a rough surface, it is soft to the touch, so it is pleasant to touch. Foamed vinyl wallpapers are made by applying a vinyl mass to a paper or non-woven base, followed by heat treatment, during which the vinyl foams, acquiring a texture. Such wallpapers perfectly mask irregularities and various disadvantages surfaces and do not stretch. The disadvantage of foamed wallpaper is its low strength, which does not allow us to call them an ideal option for finishing the kitchen.

They will be an excellent solution for lovers of frequent changes of scenery. Such wallpapers can be repeatedly repainted in any color. Are issued either white, or already color, completely ready to use. Using special staining methods, you can decorate the walls in the kitchen in a very original way. For example, paint can be applied not to the front side, but to the inner surface of the non-woven layer: in this case, the material will be saturated through, creating a background, and the embossed vinyl areas will remain intact. This technique allows you to imitate wall decoration with multi-colored cements using the “sgraffito” technique (translated from Italian “scratched”). Another popular way is to apply highly diluted paint on the front side, and then wipe it off with a soft cloth: the background will remain bright, and the relief will acquire lighter shades.

silkscreen

Silkscreen or satin wallpaper is a type of hot stamped flat vinyl wallpaper. Vinylized paper is used as a base, which is dyed in a special way, and then subjected to heat treatment and strong embossing. Often you can find information that natural silk threads are used in the silk-screen printing process, however, this is not true. Kinds

You can organize a large assortment of vinyl wallpapers by decomposing them into groups by class. decorative material. There will be several groups in total:

  • foamed vinyl is cheap and simple, it is very easy to damage such vinyl, so it is not suitable for a kitchen or hallway;
  • compact vinyl is an inexpensive, but practical material, the properties of which allow it to be used in the most different rooms, including in the interior of the kitchen;
  • kitchen vinyl - soft and lightweight material that can withstand washing, does not absorb odors, has either a neutral color or themed, suitable for the kitchen;
  • Rigid Vinyl - hot embossed wallpapers are the strongest and most durable, ready to be used everywhere from the kitchen to the bedroom.

Despite the fact that all these wallpapers are vinyl, their production technologies can differ dramatically. As a result, and practical characteristics at different types vinyls are different.

Foamed vinyl wallpapers are considered the simplest and least functional. This coating is easily deformed and damaged. The moisture resistance of such wallpapers is at a low level, their most important advantage is the cost.

Glass apron protects the wallpaper from grease

Kitchen vinyl - more quality material, it is given moisture-resistant qualities by special reagents that fix the foam material during the production process. The texture of these wallpapers is also very delicate, but already ready to endure rubbing with a rag or sponge.

Hard vinyl is the most expensive and high quality, its characteristics can be called exceptional. It is easy to use and extremely wear-resistant, therefore, after gluing it once, you can admire it for a very long time.

Among all these groups, compact vinyl wallpapers stand out, which are both good in quality and affordable.

Compact vinyl

The vinyl material, which is smooth and extremely dense to the touch, is called compact vinyl. It is created by heating and pressing PVC. Embossing is applied in several stages, therefore, despite the thinness of the wallpaper, the relief is clearly visible. Next comes the staining process, which also occurs several times.

The first successful colors of compact vinyl can be considered ornaments for classic natural materials: brick, stone, plaster, subsequently leather. Such wallpapers fit into the interior easily and naturally, they fit in terms of graphics and functionality. For many years, brickwork wallpaper was a bestseller, but now the hype has subsided.

  • ease of gluing, due to the density and non-ductility of the material;
  • good strength characteristics, resistance to mechanical damage;
  • durability of the pattern, no fading from sunlight;
  • moisture resistance, the ability to tolerate wet cleaning with a brush;
  • service life, minimum 10 years, maximum unknown.

The disadvantages of wallpaper include the possibility of highlighting in environment rooms of chemical fumes and inability to pass air through. Vapors will not cause serious harm to a person, but it is better to refrain from sticking this type of wallpaper in a nursery, so to speak, to play it safe. Lack of breathability in a humid environment can lead to mold and mildew growth.

You can admire the compact vinyl in any hardware store. Usually they are 53 centimeters in size and occupy several racks. Explore the colors of the wallpaper, choose according to your taste.

The kitchen is a rather "capricious" room in terms of repair. There is always high humidity and heat, drops of fats and splashes of water fly from the stove. At the same time, it is very important to maintain perfect cleanliness in the kitchen. Let's add to this that the kitchen should be not only practical, but also aesthetic, because any member of the family spends a lot of time here. How to fulfill all these requirements when choosing a wall covering? There is only one way out - to refuse paper wallpaper and replace them with vinyl.

Features of vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpapers have a number of features that make them stand out from the rest of the wall coverings and make them a great solution for the kitchen.

  1. Vinyl wallpaper consists of two main components: interlining (in cheaper versions it is replaced with paper) and polyvinyl chloride. In addition, modern production has stepped forward and some manufacturers have begun to include antifungal components in their products.
  2. The structure of such wallpapers is very dense (especially in comparison with paper version). This feature greatly simplifies the repair process.
  3. Vinyl wallpaper will not fade in the sun! For many years they are able to retain their original color.
  4. They are suitable for use in almost all rooms. Vinyl wall coverings will withstand use not only in the kitchen, but also in the bathroom.
  5. A wide range of kitchen vinyl wall coverings allows you to choose colors and textures for every taste.
  6. In any case, such wallpaper in the kitchen looks much more comfortable and homely than the same tile.

Variations of vinyl wallpaper

  1. Vinyl wallpaper for painting. Such an option is perfect solution for those who like to change the scenery often and make cosmetic repairs. It is very convenient that they can be repainted an unlimited number of times. Wallpapers for painting are available either white, ready for primary painting, or colored.
  2. Compact vinyl. This is a flat vinyl wallpaper, made in a special way using hot stamping. They simulate all possible textures, for example, a natural stone, plaster, fabric. Compact vinyl can not only be washed with water, but also cleaned with a stiff brush.
  3. Kitchen vinyl. The most dense type of wallpaper that will suit any kitchen. This density is achieved through the use of a rubberized layer. Due to its thickness, kitchen vinyl looks a little rough, but it can withstand absolutely any operating conditions.
  4. Silkscreen. For the production of such wallpapers, dyed vinylized paper is used, which has been subjected to certain heat treatment and embossing. Thanks to this processing, a silk effect is created. However, such wallpapers are best used away from the most "dangerous" places in the kitchen.
  5. Hard vinyl wallpaper. This version of the wall covering is produced by evaporating vinyl. This allows you to remove all harmful components from the material. The safest option for health among all types of vinyl coverings. Such wallpapers have all the advantages of the variations listed above. The only downside to hard vinyl is its high cost.

Disadvantages of vinyl

Along with a lot of advantages, vinyl also has some disadvantages. Since this material belongs to synthetic polymers, it is capable of releasing some unhealthy substances, in particular formaldehyde. That's why vinyl wall coverings are not the best option for the children's room. However, when it comes to the kitchen, then there will be no problems. The main thing is to look for a note on the packaging about compliance with sanitary and hygienic requirements.

Another point that you need to pay attention to when choosing vinyl wall coverings is the presence of special micropores in them. If there are no such micropores on the wallpaper, then there will be a poor breathability effect and, as a result, mold and fungus on the walls under the wallpaper.

Choice of colors

From a wide range of vinyl wall coverings, even the most sophisticated person can run their eyes. However, you should not immediately take the most beautiful, in your opinion, option. There are a number of tips to help create a harmonious atmosphere in the kitchen:

  1. A large drawing will visually reduce the size of the kitchen. If you are making repairs to small kitchen(up to 7 m2), wallpaper with large flowers, geometric patterns and animals immediately put aside. Small drawings, on the contrary, will make the room much more spacious and, accordingly, cozy.
  2. The geometric pattern on kitchen vinyl wallpaper will always be relevant. In particular, one of the most good options for this room - intersecting stripes that resemble a Scottish kilt.
  3. Depending on what effect you want to achieve - to raise the ceilings or to expand the walls, use a pattern with a vertical or horizontal pattern.
  4. If you do not want to change the size of the room, give preference to diagonal patterns, they will give your kitchen dynamics.
  5. Remember that textured vinyl wallpapers always look more stylish and original than ordinary smooth ones.

As for colors, designers advise not to use the following options. dark wallpaper will reduce the size of the kitchen, and "put pressure" on you. Cold shades of colors will make your kitchen dull and even featureless, especially when it comes to large rooms. Soft, warm, pastel colors The best decision for kitchen vinyl wallpaper.

Before going to the store

When you have definitely decided to opt for vinyl wall covering and have even decided which option you like, do not rush to the store. Remember simple rules to buy wallpaper. Sometimes in a hurry these banal things are simply forgotten.

Check every roll you buy carefully. Each of them must have the same batch number, the same article, and outwardly they should not differ in shades even slightly. Carefully inspect the packaging of each roll. It shouldn't have any damage. Don't forget to check the instructions as well.

If you find a marriage or mismatch at home, when the packaging is already slightly damaged, you will not be able to return the product to the store. You will have to spend again on the missing rolls. In any case, it is always safer to buy wall coverings in trusted places.

Gluing rules

The process of gluing a vinyl wall covering is practically the same as gluing any other option. However, it does have some differences. Let's look at the process of sticking vinyl wallpaper in the kitchen.

The first thing you need to do is carefully prepare the surface on which you plan to glue the vinyl wallpaper. How well and carefully you do the preparation will depend on the life of your wallpaper and its appearance.

Most types of vinyl wallpaper allow small defects on the wall, but if the surface is still very uneven, it will have to be leveled and the defects corrected with putty. Please note that silkscreen printing is a rather whimsical type of vinyl. It requires an absolutely flat wall without the slightest flaw. Otherwise, delicate silk-screen printing will lose its appearance. Sometimes, under this type of wall covering, it makes sense to tighten the wall with drywall.

An obligatory stage of preparation is the primer of the walls. The primer solution will create an adhesion effect and strengthen the wall surface. Never neglect this process. In addition, it is important to remember that the primer solution is applied only to clean walls.

Completion preparatory phase- This is, directly, the preparation of materials. Cut the wallpaper into suitable strips in advance and prepare the glue. After that, you can start sticking vinyl wallpaper on the walls of the kitchen.

Now let's look at the features of sticking vinyl wallpaper that distinguish them from paper:

  1. Vinyl wallpapers are always glued end-to-end. Do not overlap one sheet with another.
  2. Some masters apply only one layer of glue. Someone coats the wall with glue, someone a sheet of wallpaper. For maximum efficiency it is recommended to apply glue both on the sheets and on the wall.
  3. No matter how flexible vinyl sheets seem to you, you should not stretch them.
  4. When you level the sheets, removing excess air from under them, most likely you will not be able to avoid getting glue on the front of the adjacent sheet. There is no need to be afraid of this, but there is no need to delay either. Remove the adhesive quickly and gently with a clean piece of cloth. If you don't do this quickly enough, the glue will dry out and the wallpaper area will look faded even after painting.
  5. While the glue under the wallpaper dries, do not allow drafts to enter the room. Do not open windows and vents. Close all doors tightly.

Immediately I would like to touch upon the issue of removing vinyl wallpaper, because even the highest quality option will someday become outdated and require replacement. You need to remove vinyl wallpaper from the kitchen wall in two stages: first, the vinyl layer is removed, and then the paper (or non-woven) layer.

To remove the vinyl layer, you can use all sorts of options. The most effective way to cope with the task will help a drill with a nozzle in the form of a metal brush. If you don't have a drill, no problem. Use a simple metal brush, needle roller, knife or spatula. In addition, in the hardware store you can buy a special tool "wallpaper tiger". The bottom layer is removed in the same way as ordinary wallpaper, by wetting with water and working with a spatula.

The kitchen is a high-traffic and high-traffic area. Even with a hood, odors, grease, water splashes, large quantities observed from day to day. No matter how clean the hostess is, only the right wall covering will allow you to keep a neat appearance of the kitchen not for the first month after the repair, but for several years. Despite the mass of modern finishing materials that take into account the specifics of use, the most popular are vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen, which appeared in the last century.

What was and how it became

Vinyl is artificial material, polyester derivative, polyvinyl chloride. They began to produce wallpapers on its basis back in the post-war period, when there was a lot of chemical raw materials, but it was difficult with natural ones. Few people saw what the imported samples looked like, but the older generation remembers well the derivative of the Land of the Soviets. The wallpaper was hard, with the simplest texture, and more like oilcloth. And what kind of torment it cost to paste over the walls with them, is another story. Moreover, a persistent, specific smell settled in the rooms, which was very reluctant to weather. Therefore, not many people decided to use vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen at that time, referring them to bathrooms and hallways.

Today, vinyl wallpaper is a combination of many positive characteristics, thanks to which they successfully hold the palm, and are not going to give it to plastic panels, MDF and structural plasters.

  • Durable - vinyl is not afraid of mechanical damage, it is almost impossible to scratch it by accidentally hitting it with the leg of a chair or even with a fork clamped in the fist of a small naturalist crawling all over the apartment. He is not afraid of water either, even if you process it from a hose, moisture rolls off without penetrating inside, just like fat and dirt.
  • Durable - the surface does not burn out, does not wear out, does not shrink due to high humidity and temperature. Since vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen are washable and designed for wet cleaning, and if necessary, they can withstand even a fine abrasive, it will not be difficult to restore them to their original appearance. However, you should not use "heavy artillery", knowing our hostesses, they will ruin any surface if they set the task of achieving a mirror shine. Planned spring-cleaning with a sponge and soapy water, and the walls as if they had been recently renovated.
  • Eco-friendly - modern PVC is manufactured in compliance with safety standards, from high-quality, proven raw materials. Wallpaper does not have an unpleasant odor and does not emit toxic substances into the environment. The kitchen will not become an analogue of a chemical laboratory, in which it is safe to walk only in a respirator.
  • Easy to use - thanks to the two-layer structure, consisting of an inner paper layer (non-woven fabric) and an outer vinyl layer, the wallpaper does not deform. They can be folded "accordion" without the formation of creases, which is necessary when the master is alone, and the height is large. Interlining sticks to the walls quickly, air bubbles are quickly removed by light smoothing, and not by a race over the entire surface, as a result of which seven sweats from the master and half of the paint from the canvas. With vinyl washable wallpaper and glue is washed off without consequences.
  • Undemanding to the surface - the structure of vinyl wallpapers is embossed, regardless of the variety and pattern, which is due to the production method. This texture allows you to stick wallpaper on rough walls that are not puttied with a finishing layer with small irregularities and defects.
  • Decorative - there are so many types, colors and textures on sale that it’s unrealistic to list, and it’s difficult to choose, your eyes run wide. Vinyl wallpaper for the kitchen can decorate even Khrushchev.

Varieties of wall vinyl

Vinyl washable wallpaper is available in several varieties, they differ in density, structure and appearance.

  • Structural - foamed, without embossing. During heat treatment, the vinyl foams and hardens, resulting in a loose, embossed surface. With such vinyl wallpaper, it is good to compensate for the jambs of plasterers when you do not want to spend money on puttying and finishing.
  • For painting - a kind of foam, but differ in composition and structure. Designed for coloring, so they are available in white or neutral tones. It is the most for creative natures, fertile ground for the flight of design fantasies. If you paint with a smooth roller, you get a two-color surface, since the ruts do not stain. When using a pile roller, you can highlight the base with one color, and a contrasting canvas.
  • Hot stamping - until the foam mass is frozen, a given texture and pattern is stamped on it. Compact vinyl and heavy vinyl are produced in this way. This is a massive, dense wallpaper that repeats the surface brickwork, wild stone, decorative plasters, such as bark beetle or marble.
  • Inhibited - a subspecies of embossing, but not by heating, but by chemical reagents. As a result, the surface is not only convex, but also very durable, this vinyl wallpaper is not afraid of anything, they, like heavy ones, can be glued directly to concrete and they will stick.
  • Silk-screen printing - flat vinyl wallpaper, the surface seems to be rolled out, with simultaneous embossing of a textile pattern. Most beautiful view vinyl wallpaper, both tactile and visually repeating the structure of silk. They look stylish and expensive, which is not surprising, given the crazy cost per roll. Such valuable vinyl wallpapers for the kitchen are rarely chosen, since the average family simply cannot afford their cost, and the place for this masterpiece is more likely in the hall or bedroom.
  • Hard Vinyl - Triple backed with paper and PVC is pre-evaporated before being applied to the base. It turns out the strongest surface, completely safe, since the chemistry is removed. Unlike other types, they are fire resistant and can be glued over the stove and geyser.

We choose thoughtfully

In the kitchen, where there are regular changes in temperature, humidity and constant crush, vinyl washable wallpaper is the place. But they should also be chosen carefully.

  • Heavy vinyl and compact vinyl are thick, and kitchens are usually small in size, in addition, deep grooves on the surface will quickly become clogged, and it will be almost impossible to clean out carbon deposits from there, only if you cut off the relief. Here, washing with an abrasive is powerless.
  • Silk-screen printing is expensive and too chic, against its background a budget kitchen set finally fade for a couple with a corner. And the silk surface is washed worse than other types.
  • By elimination, the choice falls on structural, inhibited and solid, the latter being the best choice for the kitchen. They are available in a huge range of colors and patterns, a light relief will hide imperfections, but will not become an obstacle to cleanliness. And the embossing will withstand fire, water, and copper pipes, if necessary, not to mention sunshine and cunning household members. The only drawback can be considered more high cost, but to reduce the cost of repairs, you can combine them with inhibited ones, choosing a similar design. Glue solid ones over the sink and cooking area, and make the main canvas from structural ones.

Like everything else, vinyl wallpaper has not only advantages, but also some disadvantages.

  • Poor permeability. Cheap vinyl practically does not let air through, creating an unfavorable microclimate. Wallpapers of a higher category, at least slightly, but “breathe”. However, our grandmothers managed to paste over closets, called kitchens in high-rise buildings, with ordinary oilcloth, and even varnished it. What permeability is there, and nothing, and they themselves were constantly spinning there, and raised children, and looked after their grandchildren.
  • Docking. When pasting walls, you can not use an overlap, the seam sticks poorly and is very striking. If the walls were plastered by not quite sober cobblers and the consumption between levels is several centimeters, it is better to refuse washable vinyl wallpaper. And if there is an irresistible desire to make the kitchen unique, then you will first have to level the walls with a starting putty, it has a permissible layer of up to 5 cm and is lighter than cement mortar.

Taste matters

The bulk of manufacturers are trying to produce the most attractive, "rich" vinyl, interspersed with gilding and silver. In the great hall, with exquisite upholstered furniture such a coating will look organic, but we are talking about the kitchen. Hence:

  • we hold on to our imagination and give in to sanity - neutral shades, no lurid patterns;
  • before buying, we think over the general concept of repair, take into account the approximate color of the furniture, or the exact one, if there is not enough for a new one;
  • we take into account the angle of incidence of light and the brightness of the lighting, the roll on the demonstration stand can be turned in your hands, sometimes plain-looking wallpapers begin to “play” with the right lighting, and catchy and tempting in a roll are lost on the wall;
  • you should not buy a drawing that should match at the joints, it will add difficulties when gluing, and a large number of scraps will draw extra money out of your wallet.

Glue professionally

Even being home craftsmen, it is realistic to organize the gluing of washable vinyl wallpaper at the pro level. To do this, it is enough to follow a few recommendations.

  • Preparation. The better prepared the wall, the easier it is to glue the wallpaper. The old layer is completely removed, it is more efficient to peel it off wet, and moisten it with a spray gun or roller. Large cracks and potholes are cleaned, all loose particles must be removed. After stripping, they should be puttied, at least the most significant ones. If you dilute dry putty with a primer, you get cheap analogue expensive finished mass. Before gluing, the walls must be covered with a primer with an antibacterial additive. It will reduce the consumption of glue, increase adhesion to the surface and prevent mold. The soil dries quickly, but it is better to process the walls a day before gluing.
  • Materials and tools. Vinyl wallpaper needs special glue, it is convenient if the composition is colored. Now it is diluted and swells immediately, without forming lumps. It makes sense to dilute the glue in two different containers, thicker for wallpaper and thinner for walls. Although the instructions say to apply only to the wall, non-woven fabric also needs to be covered with a thin layer, it is easier to adjust the canvas on the wall, and it grabs stronger. It is easier to smear with a roller or a wide paint brush, using a paint trough with excess ribs. Rags for expelling air and smoothing have sunk into oblivion, today craftsmen use rubber rollers and special scrapers. They are great to use in the corner, and they are effective over a large area, and uniform pressure ensures a snug fit of the canvas to the wall. The scrapers are made of plastic material, they are flexible, but not able to damage the surface. A professional tool significantly speeds up the process and improves its quality, and the scraper costs little, given that it can be used repeatedly.
  • If you work alone, the cut is smeared with glue and folded into an "accordion", with the adhesive side inward. Vinyl does not get wet, does not tear or deform. In place, the folded sheet is straightened and glued in stages from top to bottom. The vinyl is glued end-to-end, without overlaps, only about 0.5 cm can be brought into the corners. The process starts from the corner so that the light falls along the seams, and not against them. In order for the seams to be perfectly even, you should not trust only the eye and plasterers, it is more correct to use the building level. Working with him is not difficult, and the result will exceed all expectations. After all, when docking, a skew of a couple of millimeters at the beginning, by the end will result in a “tooth” of several centimeters.

Washable vinyl wallpaper is a great choice for any kitchen. They will not lose their appearance years after the repair, they are no more difficult to care for than oilcloth, and they look much more advantageous plastic panels and similar lining. Although vinyl is more expensive than a conventional paper sink, it benefits from a meter wide ( standard size), strength and durability. Many are afraid of the pasting process, because vinyl wallpaper is considered to be “capricious”. But these rumors are not true. On the contrary, it’s even easier to work with them, they don’t spread when they get a little wet, they don’t get clogged with glue, they don’t go in bubbles at the slightest draft. Decorativeness, practicality, simplicity, all the advantages in one material.
