slag wool

Made from blast furnace slag. The properties are close to stone, but there are a number of differences. Benefits to be listed:

  • Poorly supports combustion, begins to melt at 300C.

The main disadvantage is the presence in the composition of blast-furnace slags. When moistened, they begin to react with, gradually destroying them. It's dangerous for metal frames and other designs. In addition, slags contain toxic substances that, under certain conditions, can adversely affect human health. Slag is hygroscopic, but the higher the density of the insulation for the mansard roof, the less moisture it absorbs.

Styrofoam

It consists of compressed polystyrene balls filled with air. Thanks to this structure, it has:

  • Low heat transfer coefficient. The minimum warming layer is 70 mm.

  • Light weight, which greatly facilitates installation.
  • Significant density, so it holds its shape well and does not shrink.

  • Low cost.

There are also significant disadvantages that need to be taken into account. The foam is vapor-tight; when using it in a roofing room where evaporation is concentrated, it will be necessary to equip an effective one. Otherwise, moisture will accumulate and destroy the building structure. Rodents like to live inside isolation. Another disadvantage is the flammability of the material. Moreover, together with the smoke in the combustion process, substances extremely dangerous to humans are released.

Extruded polystyrene foam

It is made of polystyrene, like polystyrene, but using a different technology. The result is dense foam boards. Their advantages:

  • Low thermal conductivity, about a third lower than that of foam. The minimum warming layer is 50 mm.
  • Light weight with significant density and rigidity.
  • Holds its shape well.
  • Not attractive to insects and rodents.
  • Complete waterproofness.
  • Service life 35-40 years and more.

Flammability and vapor impermeability are considered significant disadvantages of expanded polystyrene. In addition, its cost is quite high.

PPU or polyurethane foam

Representative of sprayable materials that are not yet widely used. The advantages of PPU are many:

  • Very low heat transfer. Since the thickness of the attic insulation depends on it, the minimum layer in this case is only 25 mm.
  • Mounting does not require fasteners or a special frame.
  • Based on any shape, it forms a continuous, seamless coating, which guarantees the absence of cold bridges.
  • Vapor-permeable, allows the base to "breathe".
  • Completely waterproof, can be used as waterproofing.
  • Good adhesion to any surface.
  • Not attractive to insects or rodents. Microorganisms do not grow on it.
  • Service life is more than 45-50 years.

This is the warmest of all the considered insulators. The main disadvantage of PPU is difficult installation. It requires special equipment to carry it out. It is impossible to lay the insulator on your own.

Ecowool

Made from cellulose obtained from recycling paper. The best decision if you choose which one to use with high environmental safety. Among the advantages it should be noted:

  • Low heat transfer, slightly higher than that of PPU. The minimum layer of material is about 30-35 mm.
  • Thermal insulation properties similar to . Keeps cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.
  • Does not attract microorganisms, rodents and insects.
  • Forms a continuous insulating coating without cold bridges.
  • Poorly absorbs water, dries quickly.

Features of installation of rolls and plates

Often the same insulation can be produced in roll form or in the form of a plate. If there is a choice, it is worth stopping at a rolled canvas.
