How to properly brazier. Braziers made of metal: features of choice, types and everything you need to know for a complete gastronomic holiday. The choice of materials for creating a barbecue

Brazier is the main attribute of a country picnic and a comfortable summer vacation. You can buy this accessory today in any supermarket. Unfortunately, almost all factory structures are made of thin metal, which, after the first "barbecue season", begins to deform and burn through.

The system of assembly of the frying box is not always thought out by the creators, the connections of which, when used, turn out to be inconvenient and unreliable.

Knowing the problems of serial barbecues, home craftsmen prefer their own braziers. In addition to the impressive strength that home-made designs differ in, they allow the creators to fully show their talent and creative invention. It is for these reasons that we will consider in detail the topic of how to make a metal grill with your own hands convenient, durable and beautiful.

In addition to traditional designs, among homemade products you can find unique options. Each of them can be copied without any problems, decorating your summer cottage with an original and useful frying installation.

Design options for metal grills

The simplest and easiest to make barbecue for camping conditions- two U-shaped metal racks stuck into the ground. They occupy a minimum of space in the backpack and are quickly brought to the “working position”. The only drawback of this system is its low height.

It will not work to put such a brazier at a level convenient for baking, because the fire here is bred right on the ground. Otherwise, this design captivates users with its practicality.

Classical metal grill- a box with legs also has the right to camping life. Only for this it needs to be made folding in order to reduce the dimensions.

For this, window hinges are most often used, welding them to the bottom and long side walls. The end sides of such a brazier are inserted into the sides of the bottom and fastened from above to the side walls with the help of hooks.

A useful detail that you should pay attention to is the holes for adjusting the frying height. Thanks to them, you do not have to re-ignite the hearth to “turn up the heat”.

If you think that the fantasy of home-made people is limited to a banal frying box with holes, then we will easily convince you.

Childhood memories of pirate battles inspired the author with the idea of a barbecue-chest with treasures mounted on two scimitar swords. In addition to the usual frying of kebabs, such a box with a lid can be used as a mini-smoker. To do this, you will need to provide the structure with a small exhaust pipe.

In general, forging is a win-win decoration for any brazier. With its help, you can easily turn an ordinary iron brazier into a real work of "cottage art".

A useful detail of this design is the side shelf. On it you can lay out kebabs that have undergone a heat treatment process. Below you can make a grate for laying firewood.

Any home craftsman can make a forged brazier today. This does not require building a home forge and buying a blacksmith's hammer. It is enough to look into the construction supermarket and purchase forged decorative elements there. Fixing them to a metal box and legs is a simple matter.

A steel brazier for a summer residence should be not only beautiful, but also mobile. Therefore, we advise you to pay attention to the mobile version of such a frying hearth.

It can be easily moved to any place in the suburban area, hiding from sudden rain or the scorching rays of the sun. Equipping the brazier with a handy skewer, you can try your hand at the art of roasting upland game.

Of course, you will not take such a frying structure with you into the forest. However, it will look at suburban area no worse than stationary.

And here is a copy with a roof that protects the owner from the vagaries of changeable weather. The rotary holder for the cauldron, which expands the possibilities of this hearth, deserves special attention.

Do not rush to part with your grandmother's inheritance and hand over the foot-operated sewing machine for scrap. Better see how great her cast-iron bed looks like as a support platform for the barbecue.

The smoke from the brazier disturbs the creative imagination of craftsmen. Why not make an original brazier-steam locomotive, they think, sitting down at the drawing?

The main part of this brazier is the old gas bottle. Having welded wheels, a pipe and a driver’s platform to it, you will pleasantly surprise your friends and neighbors. By the way, the pipe in this case is not a simple decoration, but a channel for the exit of smoke. Such a hearth with a smokehouse can be successfully used for roasting meat and cooking other homemade delicacies.

The military theme, covered in smoke and fire, often finds its expression in original installations.

A car enthusiast who is friends with a grinder and welding will gladly make old car original brazier. Fortunately, such work does not require much effort. A traditional frying box with a grill is placed in the engine compartment and the design is ready to go.

Some craftsmen manage to make such a brazier mobile, supplying it with a full-fledged suspension with springs.

Take a look around. You will see a lot of unnecessary metal items that can be used to make a barbecue.

An old steel barrel is an almost finished brazier. Yes, not simple, but elegant and functional. By cutting out part of the sidewall, you can make a swivel cover out of it. A frying grate is placed inside the container or two supporting corners are welded for installing skewers.

Rims. What could be better and easier for making a country barbecue? They have all the attributes of such a hearth: a round shape, holes for ventilation and thick metal that will not soon burn through the fire. The only improvement that needs to be made is the installation of a steel sheet with holes inside the disk.

The native slots on the disc are a little too big, so small coals will fall through them. From above, a steel holder for skewers can be adapted into the rim or simply a frying grate of a suitable diameter can be mounted on it.

Optimal dimensions and ease of use

Other people's ideas are good, but how to make such a brazier yourself, you ask? First you need to decide for how many people kebabs will be most often prepared. If only members of your family (3-4 people) are among the lucky ones, then optimal dimensions- length 40, and width 30 cm. The last size is the length of the skewer excluding the handle. It cannot be increased so that the steel rod with meat does not fall into the brazier.

If the brazier will serve a large company, then its length is calculated according to the scheme of 8-10 cm per 1 skewer. That is, for a company of 6 people, a frying box with a length of 50 to 60 cm is needed with a constant width of 30 cm. A more voluminous box should not be made so that there is no overspending of firewood.

The optimal depth of the roaster is 15-20 cm. This is quite enough to ensure that the temperature during baking is high enough, but the meat does not burn.

Ergonomics is another factor to consider when sketching out a diagram of a future brazier. Its height from the ground should be such that you do not have to constantly bend over, turning the kebabs. Lower your arm, bend it slightly at the elbow and measure the distance from the ground to your fingertips. The resulting size is the optimal height of the barbecue with legs.

The thickness of the sheet for the brazier must also be chosen correctly. Experts say that 2 mm black or stainless steel will be optimal. A thinner sheet burns through quickly, and a thicker one is difficult to process and increases the weight of the structure.

An example of making a simple metal barbecue

The set of tools for this job is obvious:

  • Roulette;
  • Core (for stuffing holes before drilling);
  • Bulgarian;
  • Electric drill;
  • Welding machine.

The first step, from which the manufacture of a homemade metal brazier begins, is cutting sheet steel. Having marked the dimensions of the bottom and side walls on it, we cut out all the blanks with a grinder. At the bottom of the long side walls, we need to make holes for air to enter. To do this, we fix a 6 or 8 mm drill in the drill chuck and make ventilation (the distance between the centers of the holes is 3-4 cm).

A more rational option is not to cut out all the parts separately, but to make cuts in the sheet with a grinder, so that later they can be bent into a three-dimensional structure.

Having bent the cut sheet into a volumetric box, we weld the joints of the walls. This can be done not with a continuous, but with a tack weld, so that the metal is less deformed. For better fixation of skewers on the upper ribs long walls shallow grooves can be cut.

The next operation is welding the legs. It is better to make them removable so that the brazier can be transported in the car. To do this, some craftsmen use nuts, welding them to the bottom of the bottom. Then threaded rods are screwed into them. We will do it easier and use the lower parts of the old door hinges. They have an eyelet for welding tacking and a hole deep enough to accept a steel pin-leg.

Our barbecue is ready for the first barbecue. All operations for its cutting and assembly will take no more than 2 hours.

It is difficult to find someone who does not like grilled meat and vegetables. That is why the brazier occupies a leading position among other attributes necessary for outdoor recreation. Modern devices have a variety of designs: they can be either portable metal or stationary made of brick or metal, with a canopy, lid, etc. It all depends on the desire and imagination of the owner. And it is not at all necessary to buy a brazier, because you can make a metal grill with your own hands.

The advantages of a metal grill

The simplest, but at the same time very practical barbecue model

The pros and cons of metal barbecues vary depending on which models to consider:

  • thin-walled they are mobile, compact and affordable. They are made by stamping parts from the thinnest sheets of metal, which has a beneficial effect on their weight. Most often produce folding versions. However, they are often used not only as a container for coals from a separate fire, but also for lighting and kindling the latter. Therefore, the life of such a brazier can be significantly reduced. The walls quickly burn out, deform and become unusable. In addition, they do not retain heat well, which leads to an unreasonably high consumption of coal;
  • thick-walled durable and roomy. Such braziers can serve for years. True, they are not so portable, as they are made of thick sheets of metal, and therefore have quite big weight.

Varieties

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the brazier, it is necessary to determine its type.

Portable (folding/collapsible)

Compact collapsible brazier can be taken with you even on a hike

Portable braziers are easy to assemble, have a simple and compact design, designed for outdoor picnics. They are of two types: folding and collapsible.

  1. In a portable collapsible brazier, the elements are connected during the assembly process using bolts, pins and other connecting elements. Such models are mobile and compact, but they have one drawback - poor reliability. Making such a brazier with your own hands is quite difficult.
  2. In a portable folding barbecue, the elements do not completely separate, but move or fold. The main drawback is short term operation. At best, they last for one or two seasons.
  3. Currently, such a model as a disposable brazier, which is designed for one use, is very popular. Its definite advantage is low price and light weight.

Stationary

A metal grill with a roof allows you to cook in almost any weather

The stationary brazier has a large number of manufacturing options. Such models can be with or without a roof. The first are self-sufficient. The roof will protect not only the cook, but also the firebox itself from direct sun rays, snow or rain, which will extend the service life. The latter are usually installed where there is already a canopy.

With a smokehouse

In such a grill, you can not only fry, but also smoke meat or fish

A brazier with a smokehouse can be used not only for frying meat or fish, but also for smoking them. To do this, it must be equipped with a tight metal cover, and on the sides with inside shelves should be provided for the installation of the grate.

The principle of smoking in such a barbecue is as follows: thin branches of fruit trees (apple, cherry or plum) are laid on the bottom, and prepared pieces of meat or fish are placed on the installed grate. The brazier is covered with a lid and a fire is made under it. The branches inside from the high temperature begin to smolder, but due to lack of oxygen they do not light up. Thus, meat or fish are simultaneously baked at a high temperature and smoked in the smoke from smoldering fruit branches.

Unlike the rectangular braziers we are used to, American barbecue is often round.

The main difference between a barbecue and a barbecue is that the meat is not fried on skewers, but on a grill. In this case, not only coals can be used, but also open fire. Thus, the sides must be higher than those of the brazier, and fastenings for the grate are necessary on them.

Table: Pros and cons of different types of barbecues

TYPE ADVANTAGES FLAWS
Portable (thin-walled)Compactness, ease of assembly, small weight, low price, mobility.Short service life, deformation and burnout of the main container is possible, they do not retain heat well.
Portable / mobile (thick-walled)It retains the temperature better, compared to the stationary one, it has a small weight, a long service life, and is resistant to corrosion.High price.
DisposableMobility, light weight, low price.Cannot be reused.
StationaryThe big sizes of a brazier, small heat emission, the longest term of operation.There is no possibility to move.
Allows not only to fry, but also to smoke meat and fish.Pretty hard to find for sale. Can be made to order or on your own.
Cooking not only on coals, but also on an open fire.Quite an expensive device.

Location selection

When choosing a place, you need to consider some important points:

  • do not place the brazier under trees or near shrubs, as heat can scorch branches;
  • do not place the device under film or fabric canopies, which can ignite due to heat;
  • it is advisable to take into account the wind rose so that smoke does not enter the windows of your house or neighbors;
  • the best option would be a separate area equipped for barbecue, located near the main recreation area.

If the brazier is on the ground, it is advisable to pave the area under it refractory material(stones or paving slabs). In the rainy season, this will allow you to approach the barbecue without interference, and the structure itself will not sink into the ground over time.

So, we smoothly approached the main issue of our conversation. How to make a barbecue with your own hands?

Tools and materials

To make a metal brazier with your own hands, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • sheet metal (iron or steel);
  • bolts and other fastening materials;
  • welding machine;

In the manufacture of a metal brazier, one cannot do without a welding machine

  • hand drill or electric drill;
  • grinder with cutting discs for metal;
  • angle grinder;
  • pipe or corner (for legs);
  • tape measure and square for marking;

For the 'pattern' of the metal parts of the brazier, you will need a grinder

  • angle grinder;
  • hammer or small sledgehammer;
  • pipe or corner (for legs);
  • tape measure and square for marking.

DIY manufacturing technology

The brazier, which we ourselves will make of metal, will be as simple as possible. For a small company, 8-10 skewers with meat are enough, and if the need arises, you can cook another serving.

Skewers should not interfere with each other, but large gaps between them should be avoided so as not to waste heat.

Following these arguments, we calculate the length of the structure. Classic skewer places 5-7 pieces of meat. The depth of the brazier is determined by practical methods. The meat should not be far from the coals, but it should not be placed too close, otherwise it will burn. The distance from the upper edge of the structure to the ground depends on the growth of the cook. Most often it is 75–125 cm.

Drawing

We make a drawing of our barbecue. The diagram may look something like the one shown in the following figure.

Brazier is not a space rocket, so the drawing can be the most primitive

We will use sheet metal with a thickness of 2–3 mm as the material.

So, we mark up the sheet using a square so that there are no distortions:

  • 70x20 cm - 2 pcs. (back and front walls);
  • 70x28 cm - 1 pc. (bottom);
  • 28x20 cm - 2 pcs. (side walls).

We cut the elements with a grinder.

Small slits will help fix the skewer in the right position

On the upper long side of the sides, small cuts can be made to more securely fix the skewer in the selected position.

To ensure the flow of oxygen along the sides of the barbecue, a series of holes are made.

To ensure air flow inside the base-box, several holes should be drilled on the front and back panels with a diameter of 10 mm or more in increments of 10-15 cm from each other. Measure 2 cm from the bottom edge of the structure and draw a straight line, marking the places for the cutout.

Welding

For legs, you can use a corner of 20x20 cm or metal pipes with a diameter of at least 20 mm, a length of 60–100 cm (depending on the height of the cook).

If you use tubes, you can make the design collapsible. To do this, you will additionally need 4 bolts with nuts. Bolts are welded to each tube. In all four corners of the bottom of the box, you need to drill a hole with a diameter slightly larger than that of the bolts welded to the support legs. If corners are used, then they can simply be welded to the base.

If you want to add a smoking function to your barbecue, then it will be enough to weld two corners to the inside of its long sides at a height of about 7–10 centimeters from the bottom. You should also make a metal cover by welding small sides to a metal base, slightly larger than the size of the brazier. For convenience, it is recommended to weld a bracket on top of the lid, which will be used as a handle.

If desired, you can make a canopy or a shelf for firewood or coals, weld handles on the side walls, add a hook for a shovel or poker.

The brazier can be not just an 'iron box', but a real multifunctional kitchen

How to care for a barbecue

Yes, the brazier needs care. What is it?

  1. It is impossible to pour hot brazier with water yet (from temperature changes, the metal can be deformed).
  2. Stubborn grease, soot or soot can be easily removed with a sand cloth.
  3. Lubricate the grill from time to time vegetable oil applied to a clean rag - this will add shine and at the same time protect the structure from adverse weather conditions.

Unusual barbecue design (video)

In conclusion, we bring to your attention a short video that shows how to make a metal grill using the base from the old sewing machine"Singer" (Singer).

Born in 1977 in Donetsk, Ukraine. Graduated from the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute (now DonSTU) with a degree in Automated Control Systems. He worked at the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant. In 1997 he moved to Moscow, where for 8 years he worked in several construction teams.

Favorite entertainment in nature or in the country is eating barbecue on fresh air. To prepare it, you need high-quality meat, a little skill, and of course the right barbecue grill.

A huge selection of these devices is on sale, from lightweight portable to stationary, which are installed in the country. However, every self-respecting man can make a metal grill with his own hands.

The origin of the concept - barbecue

The word "brazier" in translation from some Caucasian dialects (namely, the culture of cooking barbecue came from there) means a basket of coal. It is this method of cooking meat that is recognized as classic - pre-prepared pieces are strung on a skewer (metal or wooden), and roasted over hot coals.

After some time, Western traditions came to us - barbecue. This method of cooking is different from the barbecue. A grate is placed above the hot coals, on which large pieces of meat are placed, cut across the fibers. Skewers are not needed in this case.

There is another kind of devices for frying meat - a grill. A spit is placed above the basket with coals, on which you can fry large pieces of meat, and even whole carcasses.
Modern designs of industrial braziers often combine a brazier and a barbecue.

Progress does not stand still, and the oldest method of cooking meat has undergone improvements. Instead of a coal basket, you can use a gas burner or an electric heating element. We will consider the classic types of barbecues - using coals.

Main types

Despite the apparent simplicity of the design, certain rules must be observed. To begin with, we will analyze the main types of barbecues:

Portable without basket

In fact, this is not even a brazier, but two guides on which skewers can be installed. A deepening in the ground, or a hearth made of stones and earth, is used as a basket with coal. This is the most convenient device in terms of mobility. An indispensable option for hiking. However, high-quality kebabs cannot be cooked with it. Sometimes picnic participants simply set up a few found bricks around the fire.

Portable brazier with a basket for coals

The most common design. The basket is made of metal (the best option is stainless steel). Removable legs are screwed on from below. The basket itself can be collapsible or solid. This makes it easy to carry. On this grill, you can cook a full-fledged barbecue or barbecue, if you install a grate on top. Such a device, as a rule, is taken by motorists with them when organizing a picnic in nature.

Mobile barbecue

The difference from the portable one is the non-separable design. Used in the country, in the courtyard of a private house, street cafe. Equipped with handles for carrying, and sometimes with wheels for easy transportation. It is made of thicker metal, it can have attachments: a cutting table, a hanger for a pot, a holder for a skewer. Larger structures can be equipped with a chimney and a roof;

Stationary barbecue

It is a structure built on a foundation. Can be an element summer kitchen, or gazebos. It is carried out in a complex with a grill, barbecue, oven. As a rule, it has its own chimney. Such a brazier can be made of metal or laid out of brick. The second option is preferable in terms of economy and functionality. Dimensions are limited only by the imagination of the owner.

Many do not imagine a full-fledged outdoor recreation without fragrant shish kebab. Craftsmen can make a brazier out of bricks with their own hands. It is simply necessary for the exit session.

Going to nature, you can build a compact design from improvised materials. And for a summer residence, a gazebo equipped with a barbecue is more suitable.

Where to start building?

Think about where you want to build a barbecue. It is better to choose a recreation area for this.

Care must be taken to provide protection from the weather. A homemade hearth can be installed in a country gazebo, under a canopy or in a partially open veranda.

Masters often take up a decision challenging task how to make a brazier in the form of a multifunctional oven.

Indicators of medium sizes: width - 1.6 m; height - 1.6 m; depth - 0.8 m. For a multifunctional furnace, it is required to make a base, an example of which is a strip foundation.

The master usually supplements a complex design with various functional add-ons:

  • Niches. They are convenient to use to store skewers and other utensils.
  • Notches. Firewood is piled in them so that they dry near the hearth.
  • Sink. It is installed when there is a real opportunity to bring communications. It is convenient to wash hands or dishes in it.

A table with benches is placed near the hearth. The owner is free to choose furniture from budget or expensive options, depending on their financial capabilities and taste preferences.

Brazier drawings will help to correctly create a project. After all, it is necessary to take into account not only the technical side of the issue, but also the aesthetic component.

If you look at the photo of the brazier, then it should be the central element of the composition. It is important that all surrounding objects are combined.

Construction of a brazier from a brick

The design involves the construction of a solid foundation. It is made from sand, gravel, cement and refractory bricks. In addition to building tools, the master will need a drill with a special nozzle or a concrete mixer to prepare the mortar.

It is necessary to prepare reinforcing bars with a reinforcing mesh, as well as metal corners with hardware. The master prepares the material in advance to create the crate.

Phased construction

Mark the construction site and carry out the markup. After that, a pit is created with a width of 0.6 m and a length of 1.6 m.

To a depth of 0.6 m is removed upper layer soil.

Make a pillow out of sand. Its thickness should not be less than 10 cm. The pillow must be carefully tamped. Formwork is placed around the perimeter of the pit.

The next step is knitting reinforcement. Metal bars are interconnected in the form of a lattice and lowered to the bottom of the pit.

Note!

Do cement mortar and pour it into the formwork. It must be pierced with a metal rod so that no air remains inside.

For cooking cement mixture grade 150 and 200 are suitable. Crushed stone with sand is also added to the solution. The proportional ratio of cement, sand and gravel is 1:3:5. The solution will also need water - 1 or 2 buckets, depending on how wet the sand is.

The compacted mortar is smoothed and leveled. Under the bricks you need to make an even base.

For waterproofing, roofing material and special mastics are used.

As soon as the foundation hardens, you can start laying.

Nuances that the master should be aware of

Furnace brick has excellent fire resistance, but in the cold it can become brittle. Therefore, a gazebo with a brick grill is the best option.

Note!

Before the beginning construction works material is soaked in water. Bricks are able to absorb liquid, which can adversely affect the performance of the solution.

The mixture itself is prepared from other components and differs in consistency. It is made from cement, sand and slaked lime in a ratio of 1:3:1.

Laying starts from the corners. The length of the back wall is 3 bricks, and on the sides 2.5 bricks. The width must be at least 1.5 bricks. In the process of laying, the master gently taps the surface of the brick with a mallet in order to fit it closely to the next one.

metal structure

A metal brazier can be made by a craftsman who knows how to handle a welding machine. The master will need sheet metal, metal corners or pieces of reinforcement, a pallet with a grate of the same dimensions and a marker with a tape measure.

The design is a deep brazier on legs-supports. If desired, the owner can supply the grill with a smokehouse, then the household will always have the opportunity to enjoy the delicacies of natural smoking.

Note!

Experienced craftsmen can try their hand at making homemade barbecues. From two connected cylinders, they create a brazier-smokehouse. The master will need the ability to work with a grinder and a drill.

The chimney is made of a pipe, and the stands, handles and legs are made of metal. It is necessary to prepare hinges, nuts with bolts, special enamel and a wick. The brazier from the balloon can be decorated at your discretion.

The main thing in this business is creativity.

DIY brazier photo

Brazier - convenient culinary equipment, the basis for cooking in the heat. This functional invention will allow you to cook various foods using a natural coal ball. Although it was originally created as a universal cooking tool, now the brazier is the basis for cooking barbecue and meat. Around it, picnics are organized in nature and in the country, marking the arrival of spring, meeting summer and seeing off autumn.

However, the acquisition of a brazier is expensive. A simple metal structure sometimes costs huge sums, not being justified by the appearance or quality. Therefore, it is much better to make it yourself, using high-quality metal and your skills.

Barbecue base

Brazier - a special tool for cooking in the heat. He has enough simple design, but all its features are contained in the nuances. They allow you to easily and quickly cook the same kebabs and other dishes, providing enough heat for cooking.

Among the main nuances of the brazier it is worth noting:

  • Depth
  • Air holes
  • Suitable sizes
  • Recesses for skewers

While some of these are obvious, they are all essential for quality cooking. The depth of the brazier will allow you to create a sufficient amount of heat and place the meat at a height where it will cook and not burn. It will also allow you to place enough wood at the same time.

Air holes - important nuance such structures. It is because of them that meat cooked on the grill is significantly different from other cooking in nature. A constant supply of air allows you to keep the heat and temperature of the coals, using their full potential.

Important ! Another nuance of the brazier is the pallet. It prevents coal from falling through the ventilation holes in the bottom and partially regulates the air flow.

Sizing is essential for further use designs. After all, cooking is carried out on skewers or a grate, so you should be guided by their average dimensions. The brazier should give enough heat, be wide to cover the entire length of the skewer, while allowing the placement of more than eight servings of meat.

And the last nuance - notches for skewers. They allow you to place the meat in any position, frying it evenly from all sides. This approach is important for cooking juicy kebab without burnt sides.

However, these points may vary in the manufacture of the brazier, depending on its type.

Decide on the type of barbecue

Kinds improvised designs braziers are numerous. After all, everyone is trying to find the best option, where it is best to cook meat and other products in the heat. Now there are several types of barbecue:

Ordinary

The usual brazier for giving a square design. Although it is heavy, it can be carried. Often the legs are removable. The photo shows one of the beautiful home-made braziers for a summer residence, made by a craftsman with his own hands.

collapsible

A small and lightweight collapsible option that can be made at home and carried in a car. Suitable for hiking in the forest, beautiful, comfortable and simple.

Stationary

Massive brazier made of metal. The basis may be brick blocks for greater reliability. Often these types are complemented by steel decorations.

The choice of type is an important nuance when self-manufacturing brazier. This will allow you to determine the tasks and choose the best option. But the usual type is still recommended as the most versatile choice for giving.

Interesting ! Braziers can be of various shapes. Rectangular, round, curved and many other types are noted, the cooking on which is slightly different.

Drawings and dimensions

Before starting work, it is necessary to make the appropriate drawings and select the dimensions for the future barbecue. For the construction, we will choose the usual option, which is used most often. It is necessary to choose the appropriate height and width of the structure, as well as the appropriate length of the legs. A drawing of a simple barbecue is shown in the photo:

Dimensions are in millimeters. Here you can see that the total height of the brazier is 95 cm with a leg length of 70 cm. At the same time, the depth of the brazier will be 25 cm, which is the optimal distance from the heat to the skewers. Width - 28 cm, which is slightly below the average size of a skewer. Length - 54 cm, necessary for the uniform distribution of nine portions over the ball.

The upper part of the structure is equipped with gaps for skewers. They allow you to distribute the meat so that it does not touch each other, as well as freely fix it when rotating for even frying. The distance between the gaps is 6 cm. It is necessary to leave a little space between the extreme gaps and the walls so that the meat does not touch them and does not burn.

Good ventilation is an important nuance of the brazier. Here it is achieved through holes with a diameter of 12-15 mm on the side walls. The holes are located at the bottom of the metal sheet in a checkerboard pattern. No holes are needed on the front walls.

Important ! The presented design does not take into account the pallet and holes at the bottom of the brazier. This can be easily fixed by welding small corners to the legs or bottom and selecting the appropriate sheet of metal.

Preparation of elements of the future design

The basis for the barbecue are metal sheets. It is not recommended to use other materials, because it is the metal that provides the structure with sufficient resistance to heat and compactness. The thickness of the metal is about 2-3 mm. For work you will need:

  1. 2 sheets of metal 280x250 mm
  2. 2 sheets of metal 240x250 mm
  3. 1 sheet of metal 540x280 mm
  4. 4 metal pipes or angles 700 mm long
  5. Drill
  6. Welding machine
  7. Roulette
  8. Bulgarian or saw for metal

Many prefer a different build option. Various sheets can be replaced with one large metal sheet. By making several cuts, you can connect the structure with a minimum number of welds. So it will be more reliable.

Worth considering additional elements if your design differs from the above. It can be completed with carrying handles, tray, leg recesses and other details.

To begin with, there is a preliminary markup. Places of fastening and welding are marked, gaps for skewers are created. For this, a grinder or a saw is used. Air holes are also created in this step.

Important ! Often such a design is made on reinforcing legs. They are too unreliable, so the design staggers at the slightest load. It is better to replace them with corners.

Do-it-yourself barbecue welding

Welding is the best option for barbecue. It withstands large temperature changes and is much more efficient than bolting. For this, a welding machine is used, the type of which is selected according to preference. After that, the structure is alternately fixed and welded at the corners.

Advice ! For more convenient welding, it is recommended to use metal corners along the sides. They will also increase the reliability of the seams, but also make the structure heavier.

Advice ! For fastening the legs, you can use not welding, but collapsible elements. Removable legs will reduce the dimensions of the brazier during its storage.

At the end of the work, it is necessary to grind the seams and check the design for reliability.

Barbecues made of metal with a canopy

For cooking kebabs in bad weather, a special design of the brazier with a roof is used, for example, as shown in the photo. This will hide the meat and heat from precipitation, but this design is not simple. There are two options here:

  • Installation of an additional canopy that is not related to the barbecue
  • Installing the roof on the barbecue itself

The first option is optimal, because it will allow you to hide both the barbecue and the barbecue itself. At the same time, its design and installation is much simpler. The second option requires additional calculations so that the base can withstand the weight of the canopy.

It is recommended to mount the structure on metal corners. This is the best option, because it greatly facilitates the assembly of the canopy. The canvas for the canopy itself is corrugated board. It is fireproof, does not react to temperature changes and has a low weight, which is important for such a lightweight design.

The assembly of the canopy is no different from the usual one, you only need fire protection and a convenient location for the base. This will allow you to cook food freely without clinging to the armature.

The option of a brazier with a roof in one design is more complicated and is performed by professional welders. This requires the creation of a reliable structure, the weight of which is evenly distributed on the base. For stationary barbecues, it is much easier to make a canopy, because you can make a supporting foundation for them.

The structure with a canopy can be additionally beautifully decorated with metal elements, as can be seen in the photo. This will not only improve appearance, but also make the canopy more reliable and stable.

Advice ! Equip the roof with an air duct if it is installed low.

Coloring the end result

An important nuance in creating a brazier is painting. It is simply necessary, because the metal used in the construction is easily rusted, and soot and ash do not improve its appearance.

For painting, special compositions are used. They have the following requirements:

  • Temperature resistance
  • Heat resistance
  • No harmful fumes

The following coatings meet this requirement:

  • Silicone enamels
  • Powder thermal paints
  • Heat-resistant paints for various purposes

The second option for such tasks is best suited, but it is difficult to apply them with your own hands. They require special firing, after which they get their properties.

There is another option - oxidation. It is quite difficult to perform, but it is possible to do it with your own hands.

The color of paint is better to choose black. Since there will be a lot of soot and ash nearby, other coatings will quickly get dirty. On the same color, the plaque will be invisible.

Advice ! Painting should only be done on the outside. Inside, any coating will quickly peel off due to the high heat, and there is no point in it.

Making a brazier on your own is quite simple. For this, a sheet of metal, welding and desire is enough. But it is worth sticking to the scheme and plan, because minor deviations can further affect ease of use. This video will help with this, where the assembly of a more complex structure is demonstrated:
