How to make a brazier with your own hands. How to make a brazier from metal: design options and manufacturing methods. Do-it-yourself barbecue from a barrel or gas cylinder

One of the attributes of a suburban area are metal barbecues. Such designs, if desired, can be made by hand. By creating your own drawing, you can make a unique design that will be used not only for its intended purpose, but also will be a decoration of the site. To understand which design is suitable for installation on your site, you should consider photos of similar products.

Types of barbecues

The simplest metal structures are rectangular in shape and differ small size. Coals are placed inside the metal brazier body, creating the heat necessary for cooking meat. All braziers can be divided into several main types:

  1. stationary structures. Such products are large in size and are installed on the foundation. Stationary braziers differ in durability and reliability.
  2. Portable products. Barbecues of the described type are lighter and can be easily transported in a car. They can be made of thin metal, which is deformed by physical impact. Such products are convenient and often taken on vacation by many car owners.
  3. Mobile braziers made of metal, made by hand. Such structures are large in size, but at the same time they are equipped with wheels, thanks to which they can move around the site. Such barbecues are purchased by site owners who do not want to create a stationary structure for various reasons. An example is a situation where the site is small and the metal brazier will not harmoniously fit into the landscape.

Also can be found electrical products, which have the function of automatic movement of skewers. Thanks to this, you can not worry about the uniformity of roasting meat. In such devices, spiral heating elements are used instead of coals.

Advantages of metal grills

When choosing the type of barbecue, you first need to decide whether the design will be stationary or portable. Stationary can be made of metal or brick. But most often, site owners purchase portable structures, as they perform their functions and do not take up much space.

Structures created from metal have the following advantages:

  1. Ability to move around the site. If the barbecue is collapsible, you can take it with you even without a car (provided that the resting place is nearby).
  2. The uniformity of meat roasting. The metal retains heat well, so the meat cooks quickly enough.
  3. The ability to create a structure with your own hands. If you have a welding machine, you can make a brazier out of metal with your own hands.

Creating a metal brazier, you can make a design of any shape and paint it in the desired shade. In the absence of a welding machine, you can purchase a ready-made metal grill. Such products are usually sold in stores with garden tools. It is worth noting that in the absence of a welding machine, it is possible to connect the barbecue elements with bolts.

Simple collapsible braziers

The simplest barbecues are products that are two racks in the shape of the letter P. To cook meat, the racks are stuck into the ground, after which coals are placed between them. It is worth remembering that due to the small height of such products it will not be possible to fry meat while standing. In this case, due to the absence of the walls of the brazier, heat loss occurs.

But if you are going on a hiking trip, you should take just such a brazier. Such products are not heavy and therefore cannot cause fatigue during a hike. To determine which design will be more convenient for you, you need to consider various photos the products described. It is also important to determine the optimal location of the product.

Non-separable metal brazier

Before creating a brazier, you need to think in advance about what materials and tools will be required for the work and make a list. For construction metal grill must have:

  • fittings and a metal corner for creating racks;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill
  • steel sheet required to create the main part of the barbecue;
  • welding machine

Some site owners do without a welding machine, connecting metal elements with bolts. At the same time, it is worth preparing a drawing of the barbecue with dimensions in advance. You can also take ready-made schemes. The drawing should show the height, length and other design parameters. It is important to indicate the distance between the perforations and the bevels for the skewers.

The distance between the ventilation slots in the braziers is usually about 7 cm. The length of the structure should be calculated taking into account the fact that 8 skewers should be located on the brazier.

It is important to choose the right metal sheets to create a barbecue. These products must have a thickness of at least 2 mm. The higher this indicator, the more durable the whole structure will be. That is why many choose sheets with a thickness of 5 mm.

Barbecue dimensions

When creating a drawing, it is important to accurately specify the dimensions of each part of the structure. When determining the optimal parameters, it is worth focusing on standard products 95 cm high and about 70 cm long.

The width of many metal barbecues is approximately 28 cm. The length of the structure should be about 54 cm. With these parameters, 9 servings of barbecue can be freely placed on the grill. When creating a drawing, it is worth focusing on the number of people who will rest near the barbecue. If the design is created for a large family, then the dimensions can be increased. If the brazier will be used for cooking meat for only 2-3 people, you can create a small design.

On the top of the structure, it is necessary to make gaps for skewers. Thanks to them, you can evenly distribute the meat over the coals. The distance between the gaps should be about 6 cm. At the same time, you need to leave space between the extreme walls and the gaps. If this is not done, the meat may touch the metal and burn.

It is important to remember that the entire structure must be well ventilated. To do this, holes are created on the side walls of the brazier. Their diameter should be about 15 mm. It is important to make them at the bottom of the barbecue and arrange them in a checkerboard pattern. There is no need to make holes on the end walls.

Having indicated all the dimensions in the drawing, it is necessary to re-check it in order to prevent an error during the connection of the parts of the structure.

Creating a brazier from several sheets of metal

Most often, the brazier is created from several sheets of metal, which are connected to each other by welding. For work, you will need 2 sheets 28 cm long and 25 cm wide. You also need to prepare sheets of 24x25 cm. In addition, you will need another sheet of metal (54x28 cm), which is needed to create the bottom of the brazier.

For barbecue legs, you can use metal pipes or corners. Their length should be equal to 70 cm. To create a brazier, it is necessary to prepare a welding machine, a tape measure and a drill in advance. You should also prepare a saw for metal or a grinder.

The metal structure can be equipped with carrying handles and other details. For example, many fix a canopy over the barbecue. This allows you to cook meat even when it rains. Before carrying out work, it is necessary to take measurements again and mark the joints of the sheets. Gaps for skewers are made using a saw for metal or a grinder.

Important! It is best to make barbecue legs from metal corners. This is justified by the fact that the reinforcement is not reliable and the structure can stagger under load.

Brazier from a whole sheet of metal

To simplify the process of building a brazier, you can make it from one steel sheet. To do this, it is enough to make cuts in certain places, then bend the parts of the sheet and connect them using a welding machine.

The assembly goes like this:

  1. First, marks are created on a metal sheet.
  2. After that, the future shape is cut along the marked lines.
  3. At the next stage, the edges are bent, resulting in a metal box. At this stage, the bent parts of the metal sheet are connected to each other.
  4. Then perforations are made in the lower part of the structure. Their diameter should be about 15 mm.
  5. After that, chamfers are made on the side walls.
  6. At the last stage, the legs are created and welded to the resulting metal box. It is best to make legs from a corner, as they are more stable than rebar products.

The brazier thus obtained will be more durable than assembled from several metal sheets. To make the structure more stable, the legs should not be fixed vertically, but with a slight slope.

Barbecue from a barrel or gas cylinder

If desired, you can create a brazier from a barrel or an old gas cylinder. To do this, it is enough to cut such products along. To maintain the integrity of the structure, the ends should not be cut.

The legs for such a barbecue can also be made from a metal corner. These structural elements are welded to the ends of the barrel. At the last stage, chamfers are cut to place the skewers.

Features of the manufacture of a collapsible brazier

Collapsible braziers are usually made to be used while traveling by car. They can also be used when there is a small free space near the house that you do not want to occupy with a bulky non-separable structure.

To assemble the described products, it is not necessary to have welding equipment, since all elements are connected with bolts. Just like when creating a stationary brazier, you first need to make a drawing, which will indicate the dimensions of each part. The scheme of a collapsible product is more complex, so it is important to carefully calculate and correctly draw each element.

After preparing each element of the frame, they are connected with bolts. Grover washers should be used to make the connections stronger. At the next stage, the legs are fixed on the base. Thanks to the use of bolts, the structure can be quickly disassembled if it needs to be moved. Many collapsible braziers are complemented by forged elements. To make the design convenient to carry, it is worth fixing the handles on the body.

How to protect the grill from corrosion

When creating any metal product, it is worth remembering that it must be protected from corrosion. Various colors are often used. But when choosing such a composition, it is worth remembering that it must be resistant to high temperatures. You can also apply a method such as bluing. After processing, a film is formed on the surface of the material, which contributes to its protection.

Burning is performed as follows:

  1. First, the metal is degreased and cleaned;
  2. After that, the material is kept in a sodium hydroxide solution. It is necessary to immerse the metal in this composition for an hour and a half.

If you chose paint to protect the brazier, you need to determine the most appropriate type of composition. Often silver is used for barbecue - paint, which contains aluminum powder.

Heat-resistant powder paints are often used. But it is worth noting that after applying such a coloring matter, it is necessary to process the structure in a drying oven. Before painting the brazier, any contaminants must be removed from the surface, as their presence can lead to flaking of the coloring matter. Before choosing a specific shade, you can see photos that show similar products.

In order not to spend money on the purchase of sheet metal, you can use the old gas cylinder. Such products are made of sufficiently durable and thick material. In this case, a compact brazier is obtained from a gas cylinder. But before use, such products must be burned to get rid of gas condensate.

To create a durable structure, you must follow a few simple rules:

  1. Metal cutting should be done as accurately as possible. The tolerance can be no more than 0.5 mm.
  2. Workpieces must be fixed on the table with clamps. If this is not done, cutting the material evenly will be quite difficult.
  3. For cutting metal, it is worth using a large angle grinder, as this allows you to make a more even cut.
  4. Before performing work, it is necessary to find overalls, gloves and goggles. Failure to follow safety rules can result in serious injury.

Having created a drawing of the future design in advance, you can do all the work with your own hands and create a reliable brazier.

Metal braziers with a canopy

To be able to cook meat on a brazier in any weather, you can make a brazier with a canopy. It's important to decide. Will you create a canopy separately from the metal structure or will you fix it on the grill.

The first option is optimal, as it will allow you to comfortably fry kebabs during the rain. At the same time, the installation of such a design is easier. If the second option is chosen, it should be taken into account that the canopy will create an additional load on the structure. That is why it is important to make a calculation before starting work.

Fixing the canopy should be done using metal corners. This greatly facilitates the assembly of the product. The canvas of the canopy must be made of refractory material having a low weight. Professional flooring is best suited. It can withstand temperature fluctuations and at the same time has a low weight.

When drawing up a building plan, you should think about the location of the supports. If they are placed on the corners of the brazier, they will interfere with the cooking of the kebab. If you fix additional elements for fasteners, this can lead to a mixture of the center of gravity of the entire structure.

If a canopy is being created for an already finished brazier, it is important to make calculations and determine how additional elements will affect stability. If necessary, add additional legs. Structures with canopies are often additionally decorated with forged elements.

original ideas

Before you make a brazier, you should consider several original types of such products. This will help make the brazier not only functional, but also a beautiful design.

Some site owners create braziers from old metal barrels. Such products can be with or without a lid. When choosing the first option, the cut out part of the barrel is hinged and equipped with a handle. The lid remains open while the meat is cooking. Legs are welded to the edges of such a barbecue. They should be positioned in such a way that the entire structure is stable and cannot fall from strong winds.

In some cases, the barrel is designed in such a way that the whole structure looks like a steam locomotive. To do this, it is enough to weld metal wheels to the supports and add sheets of metal that look like parts of a locomotive.

You can also stylize a barbecue grill under a metal chest. In this case, the brazier is created wider and equipped with a lid with handles. In this case, corners and rivets are added. Also, these braziers are often equipped with forged elements.

Having examined the photo depicting the described products, you can understand which design would look better on your site. The selection of a specific option should only be made after the parcel style has been defined.

Many complement the barbecue with shelves, coasters and wheels, which can be seen when looking at the photo. If desired, you can create a brazier in the form of a small car, carriage and other similar structures. Such braziers made of metal can significantly change the look of the site.

Having made beautiful metal structure you can feel free to invite guests to a barbecue.

It is difficult to imagine the culinary processes on outdoors without mangals. These devices allow you to create on your own suburban area incredibly delicious food. There are many types of grills on the market. However, often the owners independently construct such devices. How to cook a brazier? Often just different designs are obtained. Their formats are determined by the owner's goals, financial capabilities, site parameters and the working skills of the creators.

Design selection criteria

Very often, in the matter of choosing a material for a barbecue, preference is given to metal. It is characterized by durability, resistance to serious temperature conditions and other factors. Some components of the structure are fastened different ways. But the welding method is the most reliable and optimal in this matter.

Today, cooking the barbecue correctly is the starting point. Many owners want to create not some ordinary designs. And so equip them additional elements. These include:

  • Firebox in which you can heat up food.
  • Special compartments for drying firewood.
  • Shelves for various culinary additives and spices.

If you set out to cook a brazier with your own hands, then before the creative process itself, study photographs and diagrams of various modifications. They are easy to find on the web. So you will choose a specific model for yourself. It is useful to watch video tutorials. In them, the masters describe in detail and practically the welding of the structure. This helps to be aware of the potential complexities of the upcoming case in advance.

In practice, the creation of a metal barbecue is not so difficult.

Just ask yourself the following questions:

  • Will the structure be disassembled or will it be monolithic?
  • Dimensions. How many people is the device intended for? This aspect affects its parameters and the number of skewers that can be used in it at one time.
  • What is the service life of the product? These criteria determine the choice of a particular metal.
  • What will be the appearance of the structure? To do this, you should study a lot of photos and options with different designs. You can choose the style and color that suits you. It is optimal if you find video material on the construction of this particular model.

Dimension Calculation

The parameters of the planned brazier are the key criteria. From them, the convenience of using the unit for its intended purpose is determined.

If it will be used by a family with a standard number of people (3-4), then a model of 60 x 35 cm will do.

For a team with a large number people need to use a larger structure.

Photos of standard and non-standard versions are easily found on the web. You may come across such pictures in which the traditional version is supplemented by many components and devices. They expand its functional range and decorate its appearance. It is not difficult to create any metal modification. And the welding process can be carried out on your own.

For example, you can act according to the following drawing:

There are plenty of similar and other drawings on the Internet. You can build your work around them. It is important to solve the dilemma with the number of skewers that are simultaneously on the welded grill.

An equally important aspect is the depth of the device. Its approximate value is 15 cm. In this situation, the necessary clearance for cooking will remain between the product and the coals. The height of the brazier should be as convenient as possible for the cook.

Selection of materials

Self-creation of a metal structure is possible using different materials. The main thing here is not to make a mistake with the metal. The selected option should guarantee the maximum operational period of the future design. Basically, one rule works here: the smaller the thickness of the metal, the shorter the life of the unit. For this reason, a material with a good density should be used. Never use sheets with a maximum density of 1 mm. They make a rather weak structure.

Another drawing example:

To get the material High Quality with a long working period, the preparation of such materials and tools is required:

  • metal sheets. Their parameters and thickness are optimal.
  • metal corners. They form the legs for the apparatus.
  • Welding technology for joining metal components.
  • Electric drills.
  • Bulgarians. She must have discs, cutting metals.
  • Set of electrodes.
  • Measuring tools: tape measure, level, regular ruler.

Additionally, drawings are being prepared. They can be borrowed from the Internet, you can do it yourself.

The technological process of creating a brazier by welding

Here it is important to decide what kind of design you are planning - stationary or portable. The first can be installed in a certain place and for a long time. The second - can be transported without problems.

Usually the use of welding technology is necessary for the production of a stationary version. Before the workflow itself, be sure to watch the video tutorials and decide how you will decorate the future device.

The algorithm of work here is as follows:

Stage 1. Initially create layouts. Lines are required on metal sheets. A reference point in this process is a pre-made or copied drawing.

Stage 2. From the working material, you need to cut out all the main components of the intended design. Work is proceeding in accordance with the existing markup on the sheets. There should be a bottom. This is the largest component. It is formed by four lateral parts. Two of them are short and the other two are long.

Stage 3. Be sure to make holes in the long side components. They can simply be drilled in one line. They guarantee the penetration of oxygen into the furnace to the coals. And then your apparatus will retain the heat required for a normal workflow. The holes should be spaced about 5.5 cm apart from each other. See that there is at least 2.5 cm left to the edge.

Stage 4. All side components (both long and short) are connected to each other by welding. A rectangular structure without a bottom and a lid should form. On the top sides long walls incisions are made. In this work, a grinder should be used. This tool should have a special nozzle for cutting and processing metal products. At the same time, it is recommended to make cuts on two side parts. They must match perfectly. Combination of incisions will follow. If you do everything correctly, in the future you will have skewers here without any difficulties.

Stage 5. All side components, already welded, must be welded to the bottom of the planned structure. Good welding skills and the ability to work with welding equipment are extremely important here. The task is this: all welding joints must be of the highest quality. So you get a box. If you have a material with a thickness of 2-3 mm, it is better to work with inverter welding equipment. To create a box, four seams on each side are enough. If the density of the material is 1.5 - 2 mm, the bottom and walls bend in a certain way. This must not be allowed. Therefore, these components are reinforced with a profile pipe or angle.

Stage 6. Legs are welded to this box. They are easy to prepare for work. This task will help metal corners. The legs can be mounted along the corners of the created structure, or at the end of the bottom.

The lower ends are slightly pointed. This guarantees the brazier reliable stability.

The outcome of the work stages carried out is the creation of a high-quality and durable unit

If you have accumulated a lot of metal, but it is represented by small pieces, then you need to cut the correct blanks. Then weld them. In this situation, you need to weld more accurately and efficiently. And the length of the seams is longer.

An example of a homemade barbecue:

Corner frame

This version of the frame is considered more durable. There is no bending of the metal. The work algorithm is as follows:

1. Corners are taken. Their frame is cooked. Example:

Can be welded from profile pipes:

2. The bottom is attached to this frame.

3. The walls are welded.

advanced version

A metal barbecue, created independently, can always be improved and supplemented with useful components. One of these is the canopy. Example:

The countertop and the frame for placing skewers will not interfere in this design. From above, the brazier can be strengthened with a profile pipe. You need to weld so that there is room for possible additions.

You can optionally weld a brazier of this format. There are other design variations as well.

Other design variations

barrel based

To create the necessary design, it will fit and metal barrel. With its application, the work is performed quite dynamically and simply. Since the barrels usually have impressive parameters, the barbecues from them are large and massive. They provide cooking for a large group.

If you use such a barrel, then be sure to make a cover for the intended device. During its operation, it must be closed with a lid. This ensures uniform and excellent roasting of the food being cooked.

Balloon based

There are two ways to work here. One by one, a more complex structure is created. The second one is more simple.

In any case, you must first secure the cylinder. He's got a faucet. A water hose is connected. Water flows under gentle pressure. The balloon is filled completely. After that, metal cutting is allowed.

Usually a 50-liter cylinder is used, with an outer diameter of 96 cm. This is the optimal data for creating six large portions of barbecue.

Marking is done along the longitudinal seam. All distances are calculated from it.

A distance of 24 cm is calculated from the seam on both sides. Lines are drawn. The balloon is in a horizontal position. On one line, markings for skewers are created. From the circular seams on the right and left sides, the indent is 3 cm. Then the marks are placed constantly after 8 cm. Total - 6 designations. Holes are drilled in them. The approximate diameter of each is 1 cm.

From the markup line, 10 cm should be set aside. Here is the end of the apparatus cover. Then she unpacks herself. This is the distance between the start line and the last line. Between them, with an indent from the circular seams - 3 cm - lines are indicated.

Then the hinges are immediately welded. We need an assistant here.

Bulgarian cut off the door. Water is pouring out of the bottle.

The lid must not fall back. Therefore, two corners 3-4 cm wide are welded between the loops along the cut line. They should be on the right and left sides of the cover.

The degree of bending of the corners determines the distance of opening the lid.

The bottom rim is removed. Mounted to the lid wooden handle.

To prevent the cover from falling inward, you need to weld a metal strip to the cutout. Its density: 1-3 mm, width - 3 cm.

According to the designations, holes for skewers are made. Drill is used. On the opposite side, the same holes are also arranged at the same positions.

The cylinder turns upside down. From the seam on both sides there is an indent of 10 cm. From such lines there is another indent of 10-12 cm, lines are drawn. Two stripes formed from the seam in the middle. Their width is 10 cm. Slots for air are made in them at a distance of 5 cm. Instead of slots, you can drill many holes.

The crane is removed. The hole is sealed.

Legs are mounted.

A simpler version is created like this: the balloon is sawn lengthwise into two equal parts. A lot of air holes are drilled along the edges. The legs are attached.

Create portable versions

They are excellent rescuers in nature. You can buy them or make your own.

Their types: prefabricated and folding. The format of the second is a suitcase. Example:

Here the fasteners are the door hinges. The legs are thin.

Another version:

Here the legs are folded at the bottom. Other components are stacked in sequence. The side parts are connected by cuts.

Collapsible versions are formed by components that do not have fasteners. Assembly takes place on site. She can be talkative. Maybe - with grooves and cuts. Such products are made without welding. The work is going on with the grinder (she has diamond disc) or a saw for metal.

Creation:

  1. A cardboard layout is made in advance. It fits perfectly to the size of the product.
  2. Patterns are transferred to metal.

More versions:

Here are the legs from the corners. The legs have slightly bent cuts. Under them in the sidewalls there are holes. When assembling, the side parts are strung on cuts.

The bottom has no fixation. The lower side of the sidewalls is bent inward by 4 mm. The sides are attached to the legs. A border is formed around the perimeter. The bottom is laid on it.

Painting issues and outcome

For a metal apparatus, it is better to use heat- and heat-resistant paints.

  • CERTA (Certa). Handles loads up to +900°С,
  • Rust-oleum. Potential - up to +1093°C, Color options: matte, white, gray, black.
  • "KO-8101". Potential - +650°C, 12 color options are provided by default.
  • KO-8111 Thermal has anti-corrosion characteristics. Overpowers the impact of +600°C.

How much does such a product cost in terms of consumables and welding work? Of course, cheaper than ready-made barbecues in a private workshop or from a manufacturer.

Metal brazier is the easiest to manufacture. Therefore, it is the most common, especially among those people who like to do something with their own hands and constantly relax in the country or in nature.

Kinds

Braziers made of metal are:

Portable can be fully or partially collapsible.

Folding products

The first type is a single structure that can be folded into portable case. Such metal barbecues are designed for tourists. Therefore, their features are:

  • small sizes;
  • relatively low weight.

Most of the drawings of such barbecues provide for a brazier with dimensions of 45x26x16 cm (LxWxH). For a large company, it is not very suitable, because it will take a very long time to cook the barbecue.

Another feature of the correct folding braziers is a special material. They are used for their manufacture thin fire-resistant stainless steel. At the same time, all loops are also made from it with their own hands. Thanks to this, the brazier turns out to be quite light in weight.

Stainless steel is very easy to clean from soot. It is enough to wipe with a cloth, and its mirror appearance returns. Therefore, a folding brazier can be put in a backpack and not worry that something inside will become dirty.

Folding braziers are also made of sheet metal. They may have the above dimensions, and may also be larger. The products are a little heavy and therefore suitable for short trips. Such designs are good option in cases where there is very little space in the car.

Collapsible and stationary models

Portable fully collapsible barbecues can also be folded compactly. However, compactness will be worse than that of folding ones. After all, the scheme provides for large-sized parts. At the same time, the creators use racks with a height of 1 m. They are much larger than similar elements of a folding barbecue. Due to their large size and height, collapsible portable braziers create great comfort while cooking barbecue.

Partially collapsible models and their sketches provide for the possibility of removing the legs. The brazier is an integral design.

Stationary ones have a large mass, and they can only be carried around the courtyard. They are distinguished by a large number of decorating beautiful elements. Many of them are . Such braziers have almost the same brazier as in collapsible structures. All other elements are beautifully designed and depend on the imagination of the creator. Often such barbecues resemble characters from fairy tales, a train, cars and any other items. Many stationary braziers are built into a frame with a roof.

Ideal Model

Its features depend on the shape of the brazier. Each form has its own optimal dimensions.

The drawing of an ideal classic rectangular metal brazier has the following features:

  1. Width - 250 mm. This is enough to accommodate 6-8 pieces of meat. With this value, all pieces, including those in the middle, receive heat from the longitudinal side walls. This heat is necessary for the formation of a golden crust. If you make the width larger, then the middle pieces will be without a crust.
  2. Length - about 1 m. This takes into account that one skewer should account for 8-12 cm. A margin of 5 cm on both sides is also taken into account. It turns out that 8 skewers can be placed in a meter barbecue. This is enough for an average company. You should not make a long length, because the cook will have to run from one end to the other. It is more convenient to stay in one place.
  3. Height - 200 mm. The optimal height is 150 mm. However, firewood is different and gives off its own amount of heat.
  4. Vertical cutouts in the longitudinal side walls. Their length should be 50 mm. This value will allow you to select the height of the skewers, depending on the type of firewood. The meat should be 30-70 mm from the coals.
  5. Holes in the bottom. There must be many. The diameter of each hole should be 10-15 mm. The distance between holes and rows of holes should be 20-30 mm. Drawings of an ideal brazier may include a mesh bottom. This option is better, since the air flow to the coals increases. The mesh should be made of wire with a diameter greater than 4 mm.
  6. Thickness metal walls - 2 mm and even better 4-6 mm. This will ensure a long service life and the creation of the necessary heat for cooking barbecue.
  7. The height of the entire structure depends on the height of the cook. In most cases - 1 m.

How to make the perfect model

First you need draw your own drawing. At the same time, the above rules are observed. The drawing will allow you to determine the dimensions of each side wall. During its drawing, they are determined with the implementation of the possibility of parsing the barbecue. If possible, then the length of the side walls should be increased by 2 cm. These additional centimeters will be curved edges. That is, 1 cm of each of the sides that will adjoin the racks will need to be bent at an angle of 90 °. 1 cm of the bottom edge of the sides of any brazier also needs to be bent. Do it inside the structure.

According to the drawn up drawing cut sheet metal and a profile pipe or corners. Holes are drilled in the bottom. Slots are made in the longitudinal side walls. In the case of a fully collapsible structure, two long openings are made in the racks. Their length should be equal to the height of the brazier. Imaginary lines that will pass through the openings should form a right angle.

If a non-separable brazier is created with your own hands, then the sidewalls are first welded. Next, racks are welded to them. You may or may not weld. This will improve the portability of the design. In this case, each pair of racks must be made in the form of the letter "H". In this case, the ends of the racks should be 1-2 cm higher than the horizontal partition. For reliable fixation, 4 protruding metal squares with dimensions of 2x2 cm can be welded to the sides of the brazier at the level of the top of the racks. These squares and racks will need to be fastened with hooks in the shape of the letter “P”.

For extra stability, you can make the ends of the posts sharp to drive them into the ground.

Throat Model

Such a brazier resembles a large bottle. The design consists of three parts:

  1. wide cylinder. Its height is 180-200 mm.
  2. cut cone. Height - 100-150 mm.
  3. narrow cylinder. It has a height equal to 100-150 mm.

The bottom part has a lot of holes in it. They are not only in the bottom, but also in the side walls. The upper ones are made at a height of 130 mm. The presence of side holes is very interesting feature. Proper braziers should not have such holes, since a lot of oxygen enters the meat through them. It changes the chemical processes in the meat, and the dish is not the way it should be.

However, in the case of cooking meat on this grill, this is not the case because so much firewood is burned in the brazier that the side holes are blocked by coals. With the gradual smoldering of coals, the holes will become free, but until this moment the process of cooking meat is completed. As a result, some of the wood is wasted.

The brazier for preparation of a shish kebab and meat today became the integral attribute of country life. Currently, this metal device is in every country house. And the thing is that cooking meat on coals in the open air is a favorite pastime of those who prefer to relax in the countryside. You can buy a brazier in any hardware store without problems. What designs and forms do not offer modern manufacturers. But, as practice shows, summer residents are in no hurry to purchase them, because everyone is trying to make this stove on their own. Therefore, the question of how to weld a brazier, namely welding is used for its manufacture, is still very relevant today.

In principle, there is nothing complicated in making a barbecue grill. The main thing is to choose the right material for it and accurately set some dimensions of the device. Since this is still a stove, the material for its construction must have heat-resistant properties. There are two such materials: metal and brick.

As for the brick, it is used only if a stationary barbecue is built with a compartment with other functional devices that are used for cooking. For example, it can be a barbecue or a hearth under a cauldron. A brick structure takes up a lot of space, and with your own hands, if you are not a stove maker, it is not easy to assemble. That's why optimal solution- this is welding of a brazier from sheet iron.

By the way, do not confuse the brazier with a barbecue or grill. This is the simplest device in the form of a box without a lid, at the bottom of which coals are kindled. There are no complicated devices here, everything is simple, so it is very simple to weld the brazier with your own hands. It is only necessary to master the skills of a welder at the initial stage. That is, you do not have to be a high-class master.

So, as a material, it is better to choose steel 45 (it is usually used for making tools) or any black sheet metal. The most important thing is the thickness of the sheet used. It should not be less than 4 mm. Although it also makes no sense to take more. Quadruple perfectly cope with high temperatures. In addition, a metal of this thickness retains heat longer, having previously accumulated it in its body.

Now the dimensions. The main one is the depth of the box. This size is important because a deep brazier is a long cooking time, plus a high probability of undercooking. The shallow size is a quick heating, which will lead to the fact that the kebab crust is already ready, and the meat inside is still raw. Of course, much depends on the thickness of the layer of burning coals. The thicker, the more heat the coals give off. Therefore, the optimal depth of the brazier: 10-18 cm. It is in this size range that you can easily control the temperature.

All other sizes are selected according to the owner's requirements.

  • The width will depend on the length of the purchased skewers.
  • The length depends on how many skewers you need to stack at a time to fry the meat.
  • The installation height of the brazier itself depends on the convenience of its use. Someone likes to squat, someone on a chair, and someone prefers to fry kebabs while standing.

Design metal frame can be added and improved. For example, you can put it on wheels, here is such a mobile version. You can build a canopy on top so that you can fry kebabs in bad weather. In general, variations on different themes can be offered, it all depends on the imagination.

How to cook a barbecue

Before welding the brazier, it is necessary to think over its shape and determine its size. After that, you will need an assembly diagram, as well as a primitive drawing, which is mainly needed in order to apply dimensions to a metal sheet and cut out the details of the barbecue stove.

The simplest design is a box rectangular shape. Therefore, in the brazier, two paired sides will have the same dimensions. These are two sides and a front panel from the back. Although the front and back are conventional designations, because you can approach the stove from any side.

The dimensions of each individual part are transferred to the metal sheet with their own hands. These are rectangles, so it will not be difficult to draw them on a sheet of iron with chalk or a marker. The elements of the brazier are cut out with a grinder, after which the edges of the blanks must be processed to remove burrs and metal particles that may remain after the operation.

If there is a large sheet of metal available, then the box can be assembled with a minimum number of welds. To do this, the expanded box is transferred to a sheet of iron, the extra corners of the structure are cut off, and the metal is cut along the fold lines by half the thickness of the sheet. After that, along these lines, the sidewalls, front and rear walls are folded. Next, the joined parts of the brazier are welded. Legs from a pipe or corner are subsequently welded to the finished stove.

If there is no large sheet, but there are several pieces of sheet iron, then each element will have to be cut out separately.

And now you need to choose the assembly technology. The brazier can be welded in two ways.

  • Assemble the box as a separate element, and then weld the legs to it.
  • All metal blanks weld to the legs, which are made of a metal corner.

Option number 1

Everything is simple here. The prepared rectangular blanks are joined in size and welded to each other so that the same box is obtained. Welding must be carried out from the inside of the box, using a conventional inverter. By the way, for beginner welders, this perfect design where you can gain experience. There are no sealed seams, even small holes are welcome, because oxygen is needed to keep the coals burning. Although accuracy does not fit in the conduct of the welding operation.

Attention! If a sheet of metal 1.5-2 mm thick was used to assemble the brazier, then each element of the stove must be reinforced with a corner or a profile pipe. This is so that the structure does not warp under the action high temperatures while frying meat. Reinforcement profiles are welded longitudinally in the middle of each element or transversely in two or three places. You can install two profiles diagonally.

So, the box is ready, now the legs are welded to it. Usually they are made from a pipe with a diameter of 25 or 32 mm. In the lower part of each drain, metal circles with a diameter of 50-60 mm are welded from the same sheet as the walls of the box. They provide stability to the structure of the brazier.

Option number 2

The brazier welded according to the second technology consists of four legs from the corner, to which the remaining parts of the box are welded. That is, the corners are first cut to the required length. This takes into account the height of the installation of the brazier and the height of its box. You should not choose a large profile, the maximum size is 40x40 mm.

The corner is laid so that its inner corner subsequently becomes the inner corner of the box. Therefore, the rectangular elements of the stove are welded to the legs from the outside in their entire length. In this case, it is necessary to cook two joints at once between the panels and the corner. This is time-consuming and expensive in terms of electrode consumption, but this design is several times stronger than the usual one.

As a sub-variant of this device, it is possible to offer assembly and welding of the brazier on a pre-assembled frame. That is, first a frame is welded from corners or profile pipes to fit the dimensions, after which rectangular elements of the frying unit are welded to it. This design is even more durable. Although it is more expensive in terms of time and materials.

Collapsible braziers

Collapsible structures are very popular with those who do not have a summer house and go to rest in nature by car. In fact, this is still the same stove, only disassembled: each panel and legs are separate. It is important here to get a device that would be quickly assembled and disassembled.

The best option is to do the assembly on bolts. That is, the complete absence of welding. Although some welding work will still have to be done. This applies to the eyes that are welded to the sidewalls of the barbecue on each side. The eyelet looks like a loop for a padlock. They are welded on two pieces on each side. And on the front and back panels are made through holes, which should line up with the holes in the eyelets.

When assembling the brazier, the bolts connect the sidewalls and the back and front panels together. The bottom of the box is also attached to the sidewalls using exactly the same bolted connection and lugs. The latter are welded to the sidewalls.

As for the legs, it is better to use them as metal pipe or rod. To attach them to the barbecue, you need to weld pieces of pipes with a diameter larger by one position again, only from the outside and in the corners, only from the outside and in the corners. For example, if the legs are a pipe with a diameter of 15 mm, then the stops are a pipe with a diameter of 20 mm. From above, each stop is muffled by any metal object (a piece of plate, a bolt head, and so on).

A brazier prepared in this way can be quickly assembled, and just as easy to disassemble. Bolted connections do not need to be tightly screwed. That is, everything is done without any tool.

  • Be sure to make holes in the panels of the barbecue box closer to the bottom through which air will enter the area where the coals are located. Maintenance temperature regime directly depends on the number of these holes. Therefore, their diameter: 6-12 mm, the number is determined by the distance between the holes: 40-60 mm.
  • You can additionally install a grate above the bottom of the brazier, which will serve as a grate. This, firstly, will increase the life of the bottom of the brazier, and secondly, it will increase the flow of air into the combustion zone of coals. The grate can be removable or non-removable.

Welding a brazier on your own is not very difficult. In this case, special attention should be paid to the marking and undercutting of the elements of the box. The beauty of the device and the convenience of the welding process will depend on the accuracy. Less deviation means less fitting. Everyone's favorite summer dish is barbecue. These juicy pieces with a crispy crust and an appetizing “smoke” flavor are prepared by stringing pre-marinated meat on sharp rods - skewers, frying on hot coals laid on the bottom of the grill. The design of the brazier itself is usually a metal box on legs with perforations for air circulation and small recesses on the walls for the convenience of laying skewers.

Types of metal barbecues

Based on the dimensions of the barbecue are divided into:

  • stationary;
  • portable.

Stationary barbecues equip on suburban areas. Often they are made with forging elements, trimmed with stone or installed on a brick base. This adds to the appearance of aesthetics and exclusivity. If the brazier is equipped with a canopy or installed in a gazebo, then it is possible to cook kebabs and other dishes on it in almost any weather.

Used in hiking, when going out into nature. They differ in small size and weight. Often such barbecues are folded into a metal suitcase.

The simplest model of a portable barbecue is two metal frames on which skewers are placed. The disadvantage of small portable barbecues is the inability to cook a large number of servings of barbecue at the same time.

More complex, but also heavier models can be supplemented with a small pull-out table, grates, and adjustable airflow. But such advanced options have an impressive weight, so it is much more comfortable to transport them in a private car than to carry them manually.

If we classify the braziers according to the thickness of the metal from which they are made, then the braziers are divided into:

  1. - thin-walled;
  2. - thick-walled.

thin-walled usually make portable barbecues. Steel of small thickness makes it possible to lighten the models, but the durability of the structure suffers. In thin-walled barbecues, only ready-made coals purchased in stores or prepared in advance on a fire can be used. If you cook coals directly in metal box construction, the steel will quickly burn out and the brazier will become unusable.

thick-walled usually make stationary models. For this, steel with a thickness of more than four millimeters is used. Such options are significantly more expensive, but the service life is much longer than that of barbecues with thin walls.

A standard brazier has a rectangular cross section, however, you can make a device for frying barbecue with your own hands from a gas cylinder or old barrel. But the use of a container for fuels and lubricants is not recommended. The main thing is that the thickness of the metal is sufficient for the possibility of long-term use of the structure.

In addition to the barrel itself, you will need: a welding machine, grinder, drill, metal corners.

1. We make markings and cut off the upper half of the barrel with a grinder, leaving the ends in place. We will subsequently make a cover from the cut off part.

2. We make legs for the barbecue from metal corners. We cut the corners into four identical parts and weld them to the end of the barrel.

3. We measure the length of the barrel and cut off two corners equal to this length. They will serve as a support for skewers. We make cuts on the corners every 4-6 centimeters (guides for skewers) and weld them on inner part barrels.

4. The cover must be welded metal hinges and two pens. This will protect the brazier and coals in case of rain.

Do-it-yourself non-separable metal grill

A collapsible brazier consists of: four legs, the same number of rectangular walls with perforation and a bottom.

Before starting work, we carry out a drawing and prepare materials.

Necessary materials:

  1. steel sheet;
  2. metal corners or rods with nuts, from which we will make barbecue legs;
  3. welding machine and electrodes;
  4. drill;
  5. grinder with cutting wheels or a hacksaw.

It is more convenient to make a drawing of the future barbecue on sheets in a cage. Be sure to indicate the length of the legs, the dimensions of the brazier itself, indicate the distance between the perforations on the walls and the guide chamfers for the skewers. The optimal number of chamfers is 8 pieces. The distance between the holes for ventilation of the bottom should be chosen from 7 to 10 cm, it is better to place them at a height of 5-10 cm from the bottom of the barbecue. The length of the legs is chosen individually.

Work order:

  1. On sheet metal, we mark the walls and bottom of the barbecue. We take the thickness of the metal 1.5-2 mm, but it can be thicker, this will increase the service life and ensure optimal heating of coals and food.
  2. By marking, we cut the metal with a grinder or a hacksaw for metal.
  3. We drill perforations on the walls.
  4. With a grinder or a hacksaw, we make cuts on the upper edges of the walls of the barbecue.
  5. By welding we connect the bottom and walls of the brazier.
  6. To make legs, metal corners are sharpened at one end, cutting off part of the metal at an angle. This is necessary so that the brazier enters the ground more easily.
  7. By welding we connect the corners and the metal box.

If the legs are made of metal rods, then 4 identical nuts are welded to the corners of the bottom of the barbecue, the rods are divided into four parts, each of which is threaded. Thus, a brazier with collapsible legs is obtained, which can be unscrewed if necessary.

Another option for collapsible legs is metal corners with holes for bolts, with which they can be screwed to the brazier box, and after use, unscrew and fold. But for this you have to wait for the metal to cool after cooking.

If the legs are long enough, it is advisable to connect them in pairs with metal jumpers to strengthen the structure.

Do-it-yourself collapsible metal grill

To make a fully collapsible metal brazier, a welding machine is not needed. But a drill, drills, a hacksaw or a grinder with cutting discs, bolts and nuts, a steel sheet 1.5-2 mm thick, metal corners for legs, and a tape measure will come in handy.

The first two points of work are the same as when performing a non-separable brazier - drawing and cutting out the details of the brazier from a steel sheet. But when performing a collapsible barbecue, you should add 3-4 centimeters to the joints.

Collapsible metal brazier - scheme

On the side and end walls of the brazier, we make small cuts and bend the sheets so that it becomes possible to join the corners and lay the bottom.

For a strong connection of parts during cooking, we drill holes for screws in the side edges.

We make the legs from pointed corners in a similar way, drilling holes in the walls to connect the walls of the barbecue and the legs with bolts.

The last point is the assembly of the finished structure.

Folding metal brazier

The design of a folding metal brazier is similar to the design of a non-separable brazier. The section is rectangular. The difference is that the walls of the brazier are not welded to each other, but are connected by movable furniture skirts, which allows you to fold the brazier after use. In order to prevent the walls from folding by themselves, we attach metal hooks to the upper part of the walls by welding.

This type of grill is very convenient for transportation.

Corrosion protection

It is desirable to protect any metal structure from corrosion, then it will last longer, and appearance will be much more attractive.

Only special heat-resistant paints can be used to paint the brazier. They are sold in car dealerships in the form of an aerosol (such paints are applied to a car muffler).

Instead of painting, you can change the structure of the metal. Oxidation or bluing is a process in which a black heat-resistant film is formed on the surface of the metal. For bluing, the surface of metal parts is pre-cleaned and degreased, then the metal is kept at a temperature of 140 degrees in a solution of caustic soda (50 grams per liter of water) for one and a half to two hours.
