Is it possible to paint water-based paper wallpaper. Painting paper wallpaper with your own hands. How to paint different types of wallpaper

There are several various kinds wallpaper for painting, including paper. Paper wallpapers are not the most durable of those that are currently offered to choose from. Over time, they fade, burn out under the influence sun rays and get dirty. Unlike dense, light-resistant and waterproof vinyl or non-woven wallpaper, paper wallpaper cannot be wiped with a damp cloth or refreshed in any other way. In case you have paper wallpapers specially designed for painting or vinyl wallpapers paper based, no problem. They can simply be repainted. However, if you had ordinary paper wallpapers and for some reason you don’t want to change these wallpapers, then there is still a way to give them new life. Any paper wallpaper can also be painted. True, ordinary paper wallpapers cannot be painted several times, since such wallpapers are too thin and not very dense, but this can be done at least once. To do everything right, with your own hands, you don’t need much at all. What needs to be done for this and how, will be discussed further.

In order for the work to be done efficiently and with the desired result, it is necessary to prepare everything in advance, according to the following list:

      1. Paint rollers in various widths and structures. To paint the surface with rollers is much faster than with brushes. Wool or mohair is best. The foam roller is not desirable, as it can slip on the surface of the wallpaper and leave a shiny mark behind when the paint dries. Rollers with pile, before starting painting work, must be soaked for 1-2 hours in cold water so that the villi become soft and leveled. Before using the roller, squeeze it well and dry it.
      2. Paint brushes (wide, medium and narrow). Where it is not possible to cope with a roller, brushes are used. The length of the hairs of the brushes, as well as the length of the pile of the rollers, must be chosen taking into account the depth of relief decorative coating wallpaper. The deeper the relief of the surface of the wallpaper, the longer the pile and hairs of the prepared tools should be.
      3. Vacuum cleaner, brushes, sponge. All this will be needed when preparing the surface of the wallpaper for painting.
      4. Paint mixing tool. A construction mixer, a drill with a special nozzle, or you can just use a smooth rail, etc.
      5. A container for mixing paint and a paint bath for paint. If there is no paint bath, then it can be replaced with any other suitable container. Place a metal mesh or a piece of a steel plate in this container, you can plywood, with holes made in it in a checkerboard pattern (you will get a mesh with a mesh diameter of 12 mm and a distance between them of 25 mm). After the roller is dipped into the paint, it is necessary to roll it several times over this grid to remove excess paint.
      6. Masking tape. It will be needed in order to protect skirting boards, electrical sockets and switches, etc. from unintentional staining.
      7. Plastic film or thick paper. It will be needed in order to cover areas of the floor and other coatings that need to be protected from paint getting on them.
      8. Ladder. For painting wallpaper on the ceiling, if any, and on the top of the walls.
      9. Water repellent coating. It is necessary to protect the paper structure of the wallpaper from soaking, and as a result of this, possible damage and separation from the wall surface.
      10. Dye.
      11. If necessary, color for paint. Kohler is necessary if you want to give the paint a certain shade of color. Shades can be chosen independently, or you can pick up in the store with the help of a specialist with a special device.
      12. A small container (about 100 ml) for preparing a trial coloring composition from paint and color.

The choice of paint for paper wallpaper

When choosing paint, consider the following:

  1. The paint can be different in terms of light properties (matte, satin, glossy and mixed properties). It is necessary to choose paint taking into account the type of wallpaper surface, lighting and the purpose of the room. To do this, remember that glossy paint will emphasize the existing imperfections of the walls, and they will become more noticeable. Therefore, glossy paint is suitable for rooms with dark, dim lighting. Semi-gloss paint - has a good reflective ability. Matte paint - masks surface defects, since it does not have a shine and can be used in large rooms. Semi-matte paint - has a slight gloss and blurs small uneven walls, it fits well into the sleeping area. Satin paint - has a smooth structure, increased wear resistance and durability. You can use satin paint in any, according to the purpose and illumination of the premises.
  2. Will this paint give the painted surface properties such as moisture resistance (the ability to wash wallpaper), resistance to artificial lighting or direct sunlight, protection from mechanical influences and other necessary properties.
  3. The time required for complete drying of one coat of paint.
  4. Transparency (hiding ability). If wallpaper bright color(or already painted with bright paint), then you need to know whether this color will completely cover the new paint or whether the old shade will shine through it.
  5. What is the basis of paint. There are alkyd, water or latex and acrylic paints. For paper wallpaper suitable paint on any basis. Alkyd paint creates a protective film on the painted surface. This film gives moisture resistance and resistance to mechanical stress. However, if the surface of the wallpaper is not smooth, but embossed, then this film will cover the relief and it will smooth out, which will not allow the wallpaper to “breathe”. Alkyd-based paint is not environmentally friendly. The composition of alkyd paints includes toxic oils and resins, so this paint is best chosen for non-residential premises. For residential premises, paints with a water-dispersion composition are best suited (water-based paint and its more resistant to various kinds of influences, a variety - acrylic). These water-based paints are odorless, quick-drying and environmentally friendly. In addition, acrylic paint creates a protective layer on the surface to be painted, which is well resistant to moisture, direct sunlight, temperature extremes and mechanical stress.

Preparing to paint wallpaper

Before painting walls with paper wallpaper, it is necessary to prepare the surfaces and perform other necessary actions:

  1. Remove all objects and furniture that will interfere with work. Cover the floor and those coatings that should not get paint with plastic wrap or other material prepared for this. Fix the film with masking tape.
  2. Tape the skirting boards with masking tape, electrical sockets, switches and other necessary objects, devices and connectors.
  3. Clean the surface of the wallpaper from dust, cobwebs and other contaminants. To do this, use a vacuum cleaner, dry brushes and a sponge.
  4. Close all windows and vents in the room, turn off air conditioners and ventilation. Avoid drafts and temperature fluctuations. Moistened wallpapers may separate from the wall surface or air bubbles form under them.
  5. Apply a water-repellent coating to the surface of the wallpaper. Use paint rollers and brushes for this. IN hard-to-reach places use narrow paint rollers for corners and joints, as well as paint brushes.
  6. Dry the wallpaper until completely dry (drying time should be indicated in the instructions for use of the water-repellent coating). It is better to withstand before painting, after applying a water-repellent composition, at least 24 hours.
  7. After the wallpaper is fully prepared for painting, start preparing the paint itself. Pour the paint into the prepared container. Stir the paint with a tool prepared for this until a homogeneous mass is obtained.
  8. Perform paint tinting.

Paint tinting

You can do the tinting of the paint yourself. To do this, first mix the color with paint in a small container (about 100 ml) until a uniform color. Add color a little at a time (literally, drop by drop, you can use a medical syringe) until you get the desired shade. Write down the number of drops. Test paint on the area of the wall that you determine is suitable for this purpose. Try on the wallpaper area, where there is the main, for this room, lighting (artificial or natural). After the paint has dried, evaluate the result. When tinting the main composition of the paint, keep in mind that its color on the wall surface will be brighter than in the container. Use your notes to calculate the amount of color. If you added 10 drops of color per 100 ml of paint to prepare a test composition, then for the main color composition on the entire wall, you need to reduce this amount by 20%. That is, for 1000 ml of paint, not 100 drops of color, but only 80.

Now everything is ready and you can start painting the wallpaper.

Wallpaper painting

Wallpaper painting as the final stage must be done with special responsibility and care. To achieve the best result, you must adhere to the following tips and procedures:

  1. Start painting the wallpaper from those areas that will be behind furniture or other furnishings. Thus, you will fill your hand and once again make sure that the chosen shade of color is correct and that the paint is successfully tinted.
  2. Pre-paint with brushes such places where it is impossible to apply paint with a roller. Using paint brushes, blend the paint well until the desired layer and shade is formed. After that, start applying the paint with a roller.
  3. Painting wallpaper is best done from top to bottom or from ceiling to floor. Otherwise, the paint may drip onto the already painted surface, thereby spoiling the result. If the wallpaper is present on the ceiling, then at first the wallpaper is painted there.
  4. To apply paint, use a paint roller and a paint pan, trying to make uniform thin layers. Remove excess paint from the roller by rolling it several times over the grid of the bath before applying it to the surface of the wallpaper.
  5. Roller movements along the wall should be from top to bottom, and then from bottom to top.
  6. Strokes of paint must be applied so that each subsequent stroke overlaps the previous one by 2-3 cm. On a smooth surface, the paint must be shaded more carefully so that no visible defects remain.
  7. On the ceiling, the paint must be applied in the direction of the light rays. If two or more layers of paint are applied, then the directions of applying the layers should be perpendicular to each other.
  8. In hard-to-reach places (corners, window and door openings, etc.), use paint brushes prepared in various widths and rollers for corners and joints to apply paint.
  9. Paint in several layers, depending on the desired effect. As a minimum, paint on paper wallpaper, applied in two coats.
  10. After applying each coat of paint, it must dry for at least 4 hours. Then you can apply the next layer.
  11. Painting can be considered complete after the last coat of paint has completely dried, and you are convinced that the desired result has been achieved. The result must be evaluated under the lighting, which should be the main one.

Water-based paint has many advantages: low cost, ease of use, environmental safety and the possibility of self-tinting. Hence its widespread use in home repair.

We minimize labor costs

Let's say you want to change the wallpaper and paint the wall instead. From such experiments, many are deterred by the need to tear off old wallpaper, which can sit quite well. Is it possible to paint the wallpaper with water-based paint, thereby saving your own strength?

Just one of the advantages of water-based paint is that it can work directly on the wallpaper. The paper is well saturated with water, which ensures reliable adhesion of the ink to the surface and a high-quality result.

This, by the way, allows you not to worry too much about whether the paint will lie well on the wall surface - it fits perfectly on paper.

Restrictions

Of course, there are some subtleties, and they concern not only how to properly paint the wallpaper with water-based paint, but also the state of the wallpaper itself:

  1. Wallpaper should sit securely. If they fall off, then nothing will prevent them from falling off along with the paint.
  2. The presence of wallpaper does not deprive you of the opportunity to eliminate the identified defects with a primer or even plaster.
  3. On the old wallpaper, you will have to apply more layers of paint (not 2, as on average, but 3 or 4). Water-based paint conveys the texture of the surface well, so defects and abrasions of the wallpaper can show through the coating. Extra layers will help to avoid this.
  4. Wallpaper must be completely free of any contamination.

Operating procedure

Let's figure out how to properly paint the wallpaper with water-based paint:

  • Room preparation. Remove everything unnecessary, cover the floor with film or newspapers and open the windows.
  • Surface cleaning is one of the most important steps. Any interference between ink and paper will impair adhesion and result in uneven and unreliable coverage. At the same time, cleaning should be carried out using “dry” methods, otherwise the wallpaper can become unusable, and you will have to tear it off.
  • Paint preparation is carried out in the same way as when working on other surfaces. Paper absorbs well. water-based formulations, so the paint for the first layer can be made a little more liquid than usual. Thanks to this, the first layer is reliably absorbed, and subsequent ones will be easier to apply.

  • It is advisable to start painting from the top corner (the least convenient). Paint should be applied in an up-and-down motion, whether you use a roller or a brush. This will allow you to better manage smudges.
  • It is most convenient to apply the paint in parallel stripes with some overlap.
  • After completing the first coat, let the paint dry, and apply the second in the same way, only in the other direction (either from the bottom up or to the side). This time, it is worth making the paint a little thicker to reduce its flow and the likelihood of streaks.

Having figured out how to paint the wallpaper with water-based paint, you can change the look of the room beyond recognition without any extra work.

Wallpaper type

Before you start painting old wallpaper, you need to determine their type:

  1. Paper simple. They require pre-treatment with a water-repellent mixture, and only after that it is allowed to paint with a small amount of paint, otherwise the wallpaper will billow.
  2. Waterproof and dense. Painting is allowed immediately.
  3. Vinyl, non-woven, fiberglass. Do not require preliminary primer are painted immediately.

What paint is better to take?

If you decide to paint paper-type non-woven wallpaper with a convex curly pattern, you should choose a water-based coloring agent that contains binders (organic and inorganic). Widely used paints are acrylic, which have a number of positive properties: indelible quality of the surface layer, water resistance, wide choice of colors. If you want to choose a budget option material, it is permissible to take a PVA-based emulsion composition. It is worth considering that cheap coloring matter does not match the quality, it accumulates steam, the palette of shades is minimal.

Tips: The latex suspension as part of the binding components keeps well on curly wallpaper. With this composition, you can safely paint paper or duplex wallpapers. After its application, the canvas becomes glossy, does not fade in the sun, but, compared to acrylic, is erased faster.

The best option for painting paper wallpaper is water-dispersion paint. This kind of mixture is suitable for painting children's rooms, as it does not contain harmful components, being an environmentally friendly product. Such a coloring matter dries within an hour. In the process of painting work, water-dispersion paint does not emit a toxic odor.

The choice of water dispersion paint

Water-dispersion coloring matter is different. There are three main types of it: latex, adhesive and acrylic.

The choice of painting decor

Before repair work, you should think about the variety of shade and pattern. Among the painting options you can consider:

  • color combination;
  • mixing colors;
  • stencil drawing or pattern.

Creative ideas will help create an unusual, unique and original interior Houses. To separate strips of wallpaper before painting, it is convenient to use adhesive tape.

Painting process

Before starting repairs, you should remove the furniture and rugs from the room so as not to stain them with paint, which will be problematic to get rid of. It is necessary to isolate the sockets in the room, using a vacuum cleaner to remove dust particles from the surface of the relief pattern on the wallpaper. If there are peeled corners of the wallpaper, they need to be glued or cut off. Next, prime the surface important factor, which allows you to protect the canvas from the penetration of paint into the structure.

Tip: The primer will give strength to the wallpaper and contribute to less wear.

After the primer has completely dried, you can begin to paint the walls. To apply the paint evenly, you need to prepare a paint roller with a soft pile. Under the paint should take a plastic tray. A bucket or basin will not work, because after taking the paint with a roller, streaks will remain on the wall

A wide brush is used to paint corner walls. To obtain saturated color or combined shades, you need to add a couple of drops of color to the general composition of the emulsion. Strokes on the wall are applied in any direction, the main thing is that the layer is proper, without gaps and differences in shades. We carry out with a roller or a wide brush from left to right, heading from the ceiling to the floor. Each subsequent stroke should run a few centimeters over the previous one.

As you smear the paint applied to the roller, you should walk over the previous section to remove excess streaks. Applying one coat of paint to the wall is unlikely to be enough: after the first application, you need to wait a while and repeat the staining procedure.

The painting must be uniform so that the old color does not show through the new layer, otherwise the appearance of the wall will be spoiled. Dilute the coloring composition with water, if required by the instructions, mix until a homogeneous consistency.

Tip: Apply the emulsion perpendicular to the previous strokes.

To avoid stains different color, the paint should be quickly and evenly distributed over the area. It is better to paint the walls in parts so that it does not dry out and the transitions are visible. Re-staining is possible after 2-4 hours.

You can check the surface to be painted for gaps using a directional light source (lamp) on the wall. Drying of the paint occurs during the day, but it depends on the air temperature and humidity in the room.

To cover non-woven wallpaper evenly with the coloring matter, staining should begin from the outside. In the presence of a relief pattern, several layers of paint should be applied from the wrong side to obtain a more saturated color. With this application, the canvas will be saturated, the background will acquire the desired shade. Thin vinyl wallpapers are not suitable for painting. If they are non-woven, it will be difficult to paint them.

Paper canvases are suitable for staining with any composition. In this case, the surface primer will be insufficient, it will be necessary to pre-treat it with water-repellent agents.

Tip: The paint base used for paper wallpaper should be water repellent.

If the walls in the room are pasted over with ordinary wallpaper, which wrinkle after applying the primer, it is better to refuse the process of painting the wallpaper. If painting is done for the first time, in order not to waste the paint in vain and not to spoil the paper coating, it is better to invite a painter.

Any paint released for sale is accompanied by instructions on which to navigate the dilution process for painting paper-based wallpaper. Non-woven fabrics are able to transfer up to 10 stains. Paper type material can be deformed even after the first repainting. Foamed vinyl wallpaper will not take the coloring composition due to the repulsive reaction of the material. As a result, it turns out that you can paint old paper-type wallpaper rolls, the main thing is to purchase a high-quality coloring composition, a terry roller, a primer and a water-repellent agent, and everything will certainly work out.

Technology for painting old wallpaper

So, is it possible to paint ordinary paper wallpaper? It is possible, but infrequently and only after pre-treatment, since unprepared paper, the water in the paint will soak and deform.

Preparatory work

Instruction:

  1. We take out all the movable furniture from the room, and cover the fixed furniture with plastic wrap. At the same time, it is also desirable to protect the floor from accidental splashes of paintwork material.
  2. We clean the surface of all kinds of dust and dirt with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.
  1. We glue the exfoliating areas. If the condition of such fragments is too deplorable, then carefully cut them off.
  1. We cover the damaged places and scratches with mastic, which after drying we grind with sandpaper.
  2. We prime the surface. This is the most important step that will protect the wallpaper from the penetration of paint into their structure. The primer will create a reliable polymer layer that reduces the porosity of the paper and protects the dilapidated finish from further wear.
  1. After the primer is completely dry, you can start painting.

Paint selection

Is it possible to paint paper wallpaper with water-based paint? Even necessary. This is the most suitable suspension for the restoration of old wall finishes.

  • Ecological purity. When hardening, only harmless water vapor is released, which is important when using the emulsion indoors.
  • Low price. It is achieved due to the absence of an expensive solvent in the composition.
  • Wide range of rich colors. Plus the possibility of mixing them for unique color solutions.
  • Moisture resistance. After evaporation of H 2 O, the resulting polymer film has a high water resistance.
  • High resistance to abrasion, exposure to sunlight and temperature extremes.
  • Fire resistance. For paper finishes, this is a great way to improve fire safety.
  • Ease of application. Does not form streaks and streaks.
  • Possibility of wet cleaning. Allows you to keep the updated coating clean.
  • Long service life. At proper care reaches ten years.

Application of the emulsion

  1. We dilute the purchased mixture with water according to the instructions attached to it.. If a white emulsion is purchased, then we also add the necessary dyes, mixing everything with construction mixer Or a drill at low speed.
  1. The resulting solution is poured into a special paint tray.
  1. We dip the brush into the suspension and paint over the corners and other hard-to-reach places.
  1. Then we take a roller for painting with a medium pile, collect the emulsion with it and draw it several times over the ribbed surface, getting rid of excess liquid.

Tip: if you have textured wallpaper for decoration, then it is better to take a tool with a long pile.
He will be better able to process numerous recesses.

  1. Swipe the tool from left to right, descending from the ceiling to the floor. In this case, it is necessary that each subsequent strip runs a few centimeters onto the previous one.
  2. At the moment the liquid in the roller ends, we run it along the already painted part of the wall in order to collect excess suspension from it.
  3. We are waiting for the first layer to harden, after which we apply the second one perpendicularly.
  4. R We check the result by bringing a bright light source close to the finish. So we can see the prominent spots.
  5. If the check was successful, then we can safely enjoy the work done.

Conclusion

Hi all!
for a long time I was tormented by the question of whether it is possible to paint the old paper wallpaper? Posherstila posts: who writes can be, who is not - swell and fall off, who advised to glue new ones.

The wallpaper in the kitchen was glued 3 years ago, in some places it was very dirty, especially in the refrigerator area and where the TV was hanging. Vinyl wallpaper, professionally glued, end-to-end, firmly. Ceiling, ceiling frame and floor plinth I'm still satisfied with the repair in the near future is not going to. But the wallpaper strained a lot, the color does not fit my favorite sofa)))). In terms of money and time, painting won in relation to plywood.
I bought 2 cans of acrylic paint of 2.5 kg Polish brand DEKORAL, 300 r per can. one color - honey, the second - almond, the color of the skin of the sofa, a roller, a brush, and in 1 day the kitchen was repainted. Wallpaper did not process anything, someone advised repellent impregnation, etc. Once upon a time I had to bother with this. I decided if they fall away, then okay, but I won’t spend money on removing the old ones. The only thing is that I walked with a vacuum cleaner to clean it from dust, and wiped them with a well-wrung damp cloth. I sealed the plinth and molding with masking tape so as not to stain it and go! Drying time 2 hours, painted 2 times. The second time in 2 hours after drying of the first layer.

Despite the quality and beautiful drawing, sooner or later the wallpaper loses its color, and the pattern becomes boring. Depending on the type and characteristics of roll wallpaper, they can be painted with any paint color you like. The main thing is that the coloring composition is fully consistent with the upcoming work.

Do not require a preliminary primer, painted immediately.

What paint is better to take?

If you decide to paint paper-type non-woven wallpaper with a convex curly pattern, you should choose a water-based coloring agent that contains binders (organic and inorganic). Widely used paints are acrylic, which have a number of positive properties: the indelible quality of the surface layer, water resistance, a wide choice of colors.

Before repair work, you should think about the variety of shades and patterns. Among the painting options you can consider:

  • color combination;
  • mixing colors;
  • stencil drawing or pattern.

Creative ideas will help create an unusual, unique and original home interior.

Next, we prime the surface - an important factor that allows you to protect the canvas from the penetration of paint into the structure.

To get a rich color or combined shades, you need to add a couple of drops of color to the general composition of the emulsion.

To avoid spots of different colors, the paint should be quickly and evenly distributed over the area.

Post navigation

Wallpaper is part of the interior of so many houses. Often we change this finish to a new one, or another way to decorate the walls. The process of removing wallpaper is very long and takes a lot of effort, so not everyone wants to repeat it. But, why not just paint the wallpaper in new color and not to update the appearance of your home? Moreover, it is quite simple to do it yourself.

Many of us have heard that there are wallpapers specifically designed for painting, but what about the usual look of this wall covering? As it turned out, all paper wallpapers are suitable for coloring, with small nuances, which we will discuss below.

When should you apply this type of paint?

Wallpapers are beginning to not suit us for many reasons. They are torn or are initially poorly glued. In this case, the exit with coloring is not suitable, since it is better to clean the wall, and then apply paint to it. However, if your wallpaper is in perfect condition, and you just don't like its color or pattern, then the coloring option is appropriate here.

What paint on paper wallpaper is ideal?

Acrylic paint is better suited for these purposes than water-based or alkyd. The reason is the stability of the color, as well as the fact that such paint can be washed.

Other than that, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The paint should cover everything that is located under it. You don't want the wallpaper pattern to treacherously show through the painted surface;
  • Glossy or matte? The first is ideal for kitchens, and the second for large rooms.
  • Before you start painting, you need to walk on the wallpaper with a roller with a water-repellent coating. It is better to start painting in a day, when the coating dries;
  • It is best to paint in two layers. The second must be applied after a few hours, as soon as the first dries;
  • It is best to paint from above, use rollers and brushes, and also protect everything that cannot be painted, but is “in the affected area” with masking tape.

Paper wallpapers are attractive and affordable finishing material. But they tend to become unusable after a while, losing their external aesthetics, or simply become boring with their colors. And then you have a choice: to replace this part of the interior or to update it?

Changing the finish completely is quite expensive and time consuming, but is it possible to paint old paper wallpapers and how to do it, we will consider in this article.

Sample of latex water-repellent solution

  1. After the primer is completely dry, you can start painting.

Paint selection

Water emulsion sample

Is it possible to paint paper wallpaper with water-based paint? Even necessary. This is the most suitable suspension for the restoration of old wall finishes.

  • Low price. It is achieved due to the absence of an expensive solvent in the composition.
  • Wide range of rich colors. Plus the possibility of mixing them for unique color solutions.

Variety of colors

  • Moisture resistance. After evaporation of H 2 O, the resulting polymer film has a high water resistance.
  • High resistance to abrasion, exposure to sunlight and temperature extremes.
  • Fire resistance. For paper finishes, this is a great way to improve fire safety.
  • Ease of application. Does not form streaks and streaks.
  • Possibility of wet cleaning. Allows you to keep the updated coating clean.
  • Long service life. With proper care reaches ten years.

Application of the emulsion

  1. We dilute the purchased mixture with water according to the instructions attached to it.. If a white emulsion is purchased, then we also add the necessary dyes, mixing everything with a construction mixer or a drill operating at low speeds.

Manual tinting

  1. The resulting solution is poured into a special paint tray.

Bath with paint

He will be better able to process numerous recesses.

Painting a structural surface with a long pile roller

New life for old wallpapers

The video in this article will give you an additional opportunity to get acquainted with a certain amount of information that directly relates to the materials reviewed. Painting is always easier and cheaper than a complete refinish.

Although painting the wallpaper may seem pretty unusual idea, in many cases, having previously specified which wallpaper can be painted, this is a very practical solution. Spots, cracks and scratches that appear on the wallpaper, or just an annoying color, often almost “scream” about the need for repair. By painting the wallpaper, you can save money and time, while the room will again look aesthetically pleasing.

What wallpaper can be painted?

Over time, the wallpaper loses its attractiveness and fades. Their drawing can simply bother the residents. However, the prospect of stripping wallpaper, plastering, tiling, or any other global event does not seem inspiring. Fortunately, this is not always necessary.

If the wallpaper is in relatively good condition, with a little work, you can extend its life by painting the old wallpaper. Two elements are important here: the type of base and the paint.

Varieties of wallpaper

There are many different types of wallpaper on the market, each of them is characterized by a different strength, texture, method of use. Main varieties:

  • paper wallpaper - the least durable, but also the cheapest, it is advisable to use them in rooms that are not subject to pollution and damage, such as, for example, a bedroom and a living room;
  • vinyl wallpaper is resistant to frequent washing, recommended for utility rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, can be painted;
  • fiberglass wallpaper is very resistant to mechanical damage, so you should use them in hallways and corridors, after pasting I paint T special paints, resistant to repeated washing and cleaning;
  • wallpaper type "rauhfaser" - wallpaper designed for painting with acrylic paints, which should give the wall a certain texture (it is achieved thanks to the added wood fiber), can be repeatedly repainted;
  • wallpaper textile made of various materials(for example, silk or linen) on a paper or acrylic base, give the interior a warm, original character, are great for a living room, bedroom, office, do not paint;
  • velor, cork, photo wallpapers - perform decorative functions, are used mainly as an accent or addition, they rarely cover all walls, these wallpapers are not paintable;
  • non-woven was created by combining cellulose and polyester, which gives the wallpaper the flexibility and properties that are inherent in the fabric, thanks to this it adheres well to the wall, gluing occurs without any hassle.

Thus, from this list it can be seen that it is possible to paint raufaser, vinyl and fiberglass wallpapers without any problems. But is it possible to paint paper wallpaper? Yes, you can paint paper, non-woven and old vinyl wallpapers, provided that they are degreased and glued in places where they lag behind the wall. And, of course, you should choose the right paint.

The most economical, both financially and in terms of labor costs, is to paint the wallpaper with water-based paint. It is inexpensive and easy to use and has a wide range of color scheme(you can make any color).

Paint selection

When choosing which paint to use, you should pay attention to both its properties and the final result achieved with its help. The main parameters that the paint should have:

  • environmental friendliness harmless to the inhabitants of the dwelling;
  • ease of use - the application should not cause any difficulties;
  • strength - the paint must be resistant to mechanical damage, not cracked;
  • lightfastness - color retention for a long time;
  • moisture resistance - can be washed without worrying about the safety of the painted surface.

Alkyd paints are made on the basis of polyhydric alcohols and acids. Form a durable, aesthetic coating. These paints are characterized by gloss, fast drying, good wetting of the painted surface. This option refers to fairly cheap paints. It is characterized by resistance to temperatures, oils and detergents.

Painting old wallpaper of almost all types is possible with water-based paints. If streaks appear after the first application, to improve the effect, it is enough to apply a second coat of paint.

To paint paper and old vinyl wallpapers, latex paints are very suitable, which do not require double painting, as the latex forms a kind of coating and perfectly hides imperfections.

Acrylic - water-dispersion paint based on polymers. Easy to use - the density is easily adjusted by adding water, the desired color is achieved by adding pigment dyes. The paint is resistant to moisture, well conveys the texture of the surface.

It is also important to choose the right degree of paint gloss. Painting paper wallpapers that have served for some time is advisable with matte or satin paint. Options with glossy and semi-gloss paint are unacceptable. For example, even if the surface looks smooth, then after painting it with glossy paint, previously invisible defects will appear.

Wallpaper painting methods

Having decided whether it is possible to paint paper wallpapers, and having learned what and how it can be done, the question remains - how to paint old wallpapers? There are several options. Application by brush or roller is one of the most popular methods. The use of a roller speeds up the work.

If the wallpaper has bulges, better fit roller with a long pile. In turn, spray painting requires a special gun. This method allows you to cover the entire wall with a uniform thin layer of paint, while maintaining the texture.

To simplify your work, you should take out everything unnecessary from the room. Items, the movement of which is associated with certain difficulties, need to be covered with a film or old newspapers, it is also worth doing

and with the floor.

  1. Spray method. When using a gun for painting walls, the structure of the wallpaper will be completely preserved. The gun draws very accurately, evenly distributes the paint, covers the wall with a thin layer. Thanks to this, each bulge will be preserved and emphasized.
  2. Painting wallpaper with a brush. To paint a surface with bulges, it is necessary to use a brush with a short, thin synthetic bristle. When applying paint to a wall, do not perform only vertical or horizontal movements. The brush should be made in a circular motion so that each bulge is covered with a coloring composition from all sides. If the paint is too thick and leaves streaks or blurs the texture, which is especially true for paper wallpapers , you need to dilute it. The required consistency can be balanced. To do this, you can add a small amount of water to the paint can, mix thoroughly and check if there is enough liquid paint on small fragments or in inconspicuous places, which will subsequently be hidden behind furniture.
  3. Roller painting. All the roughness of the wall, in particular, the bulges of the patterns on the wallpaper, require the use of a roller with a long pile, which should be carried out vertically, and then diagonally to the right and left - so that the paint fills all the recesses in the texture of the wallpaper.

It is desirable to use templates for painting on ordinary wallpaper without relief. Due to the convex patterns on the surface of the wallpaper, the paint templates do not fit snugly against the wall, the paint can leak out and form smudges. Because of this, it is better not to use them on wallpaper with a rich embossed texture.

Before painting paper wallpapers, you should prepare them - cover them with a water-repellent agent, glue the lagging areas. Any wallpaper should be primed before painting. Painting is interestingly shown in the video:

Any person, to one degree or another, has encountered painting work and quite rightly believes that there is no particular difference between paints. However, before using water-repellent compounds, primer or paint, it is advisable to read the instructions that manufacturers place on the package. This will help to avoid unpleasant surprises and save your nerves.

It happens that the owner of an apartment or house wants to change the appearance of the premises, but he has no desire to start a full-scale renovation. Or just doesn't allow financial position. How to be?

Alternatively, you can change the color of the paper wallpaper to something more pleasant or to match the style of the new furniture. Painting wallpaper is a fairly simple procedure, because it is quite possible to do it yourself, but before you start painting paper wallpapers, you need to answer a few questions:

  • How well are they glued?
  • Is there damage on the surface?
  • Are there greasy or dirty spots?

If the answer to at least one question is “yes”, then it is worth considering the expediency. It is unlikely that paper wallpapers will last long, so why paint them? This is an extra waste of time and effort. Another thing is when the surface of the paper web is good and the wallpaper will last for many more years.

Wallpaper for painting

Today, such a thing as paper wallpaper for painting does not surprise anyone. They can be freely found in the market or hardware stores. The main difference is the lack of paint on the surface. The factory, as it were, gives the buyer the opportunity to independently choose and apply the color they like on the wallpaper.

Naturally, this version of paper wallpaper is much cheaper, but good paint “compensates” for this. Such a canvas has 2 advantages: a long service life and the ability to change colors at any request.

Varieties of wallpaper for painting

Wallpaper for painting on paper basis

Among all types, they are the most popular. This is due to the fact that they can be used even on walls with an uneven surface. Most brands produce paper wallpapers consisting of 2 layers, each of which is treated with a special substance that increases the life of the canvas.

Coarse fiber wallpapers are very popular. Their secret lies in the fact that wood chips are placed between the two layers. This combination forms an interesting texture of the surface of the wallpaper without any pattern.

If you use this canvas for gluing a room and ceiling, then after drying, the effect of a seamless pattern will be created. Due to the lack of complex images, the gluing process is extremely simple - no need to select pictures.

Non-woven wallpaper for painting

They are made from a special fiber, which is compressed in the form of segments. This structure is extremely durable and allows you to close various deformations or damage on the walls.

On the one hand, the canvas turns out to be perfectly even, on the other hand, a pattern is applied to it using foamed vinyl. It looks, of course, beautiful, but in practice it is very fragile. The entire relief of the wallpaper can be removed with a fingernail with little or no effort. Painting such a surface significantly increases the strength.

Non-woven wallpaper is quite easy to glue, in fact, like paper, the only difference is that the adhesive base must be applied to the wall.

Glass fiber

The manufacturing process is significantly different from the previous 2. The paper base is combined with fiberglass thread and impregnated with a substance that makes them fire resistant.

You can find canvases with and without drawings, the material allows you to change the surface texture in any direction. They have an original appearance and look very organic on the wall. For gluing, you must use a special glue.

What is needed for painting

The list of the most necessary things for painting paper wallpapers is practically no different from other similar works. The first thing you need to pay attention to is the paint. The quality will depend on it.

You will also need brushes and a roller. To simplify the work, it is better to have these tools in different sizes, especially if the room is irregular shape or has a large number of "difficult" places, for example, windows, corners, decor elements, and so on.

To exclude the possibility of paint getting on the baseboard, you can purchase mounting tape. It will take quite a bit of time to glue the entire perimeter, but this will save you from further laundering the surface of the plinth.

Surface preparation

If possible, then remove all furniture and, in general, everything that can be carried away from the room. Such piles will only interfere, besides, paint can get on them. If it is not possible to take out, then it is necessary to cover everything with plastic wrap. If it is not, then it is worth buying, in the future it will definitely come in handy on the farm.

Important! On new vacuum cleaners, it is possible to set the minimum speed - this must be done.

Despite outwardly strong wallpaper, this device can capture part of the canvas. On almost all old vacuum cleaners, it is possible to reduce the suction force using a special hole on the handle.

In some situations there is small areas peeled off wallpaper and re-paste because of them the whole room does not want to. In this case, you can either glue this area, or carefully cut it off with scissors.

Paint selection

This stage must be taken very responsibly, because there is a huge variety of colors that are completely different in their characteristics. For example, based on appearance, they are divided into:

  • glossy,
  • semi-gloss,
  • satin,
  • matte,
  • semi-matte.

Basically, you should choose a certain type of paint, based on the illumination of the room and surface. For example, matte paint will look great in large rooms, but semi-gloss can be used for the kitchen. On the one hand, it washes well, which is especially important in conditions of constant cooking, on the other hand, such a surface perfectly reflects light.

What should be considered when choosing paint for paper wallpaper?

  • Will it show through after applying to another?
  • Can it be washed?
  • What is its resistance to light?
  • How long does it take to dry completely?
  • Are there harmful impurities?

Usually such information is written on the label with paint, but if it is not there or if it is difficult to find it, it is better to contact a specialist for advice. For paper wallpapers, water-based paint is usually used, it may differ in the origin of the components.

Professionals prefer to use acrylic paints, due to the fact that they have the most suitable qualities. Of them:

  • set of shades and colors,
  • abrasion resistance,
  • vapor permeability,
  • waterproofing.

With this paint you can paint even in conditions of high humidity. If the budget does not allow, as an option, use a water-based paint with a PVA base. Other types will not work, because for low price you have to pay for quality.

Some craftsmen use special formulations with latex-based binders. The surface is pleasantly matte with good resistance to moisture. On the other hand, such paint has a weaker resistance to abrasion.

How to paint

The simplest and convenient option- paint roller.

Important! You should only purchase a mohair or wool roller.

Foam rubber for painting paper wallpaper is not suitable. This is due to the fact that it periodically slips and, after drying, a shiny, well-marked trace forms in this place.

On the other hand, if the wallpaper has some kind of pattern, then the foam roller will simply be missing in the recesses. Experts recommend using only a special tray as a container for paint. No bucket or jar will replace it.

Paint is poured into the lower compartment, then the roller is well fanned and wiped against the top of the tray. If this is not done, then the paint, instead of getting on the wallpaper, will end up on the floor. In hard-to-reach places, you can use narrow brushes or a brush.

Ideally, you need to apply paint on paper wallpaper in an even layer. If this is done for the first time, then it is better to start from the place that will be covered by furniture. Even if a mistake is made, it will be safely hidden.

If the ceiling is painted before the paper wallpaper, this will prevent streaks on the walls. If they dry out, it will be quite problematic to get rid of them.

In most cases, one coat of paint is not enough. Therefore, before applying the second one, you need to make sure that the first one has dried well. It usually takes at least 4 hours. If after this layer the color of the paper wallpaper is not visible anywhere, then the painting can be completed. If spots are visible somewhere, you can cover the paper wallpaper with another layer.

To see an example of how to paint paper wallpapers, you can watch the video:

Hi all!
for a long time I was tormented by the question whether it is possible to paint old paper wallpapers? Posherstila posts: who writes can be, who is not - swell and fall off, who advised to glue new ones.

The wallpaper in the kitchen was glued 3 years ago, in some places it was very dirty, especially in the refrigerator area and where the TV was hanging. Vinyl wallpaper, professionally glued, end-to-end, firmly. The ceiling, ceiling baguette and floor plinth are satisfactory for me to repair in the near future, I'm not going to. But the wallpaper strained a lot, the color does not fit my favorite sofa)))). In terms of money and time, painting won in relation to plywood.
I bought 2 cans of acrylic paint, 2.5 kg each, from the Polish brand DEKORAL, 300 r per can. one color - honey, the second - almond, the color of the skin of the sofa, a roller, a brush, and in 1 day the kitchen was repainted. Wallpaper did not process anything, someone advised water-repellent impregnation, etc. Once upon a time I had to bother with this. I decided - if they disappear, then okay, but I won’t spend money on removing the old ones.

***At first I thought about sticking new wallpaper, but when the foreman came and started counting the work - remove the plinth, dismantle the ceiling moldings, remove the old wallpaper, remove the radiator, i.e. drain the water from the system, remove the wooden lining of the arch, glue new wallpaper + buy and paste new ceiling tiles, put back the radiator and the wooden arch - it would also have been done for at least a week, I felt bad, and I didn’t even ask the price of all this - I realized that NOT NOW!

***Actually, painting wallpaper is quite simple, but you have to do it carefully. Paper wallpapers do not tolerate moisture, they easily absorb paint, can move away from the walls and fall off. To prevent this from happening, you need to use a roller with a small nap.

During painting, our old wallpaper swelled a little in one place and it turned out to be like a bubble, but after drying everything came back, nothing peeled off or fell off anywhere.
After the paint had dried, it was decided that it was worth applying a second coat of paint to get a more even color.
The wallpaper was repainted - nothing fell off either. After we painted the old wallpaper, we got light walls(and by the way, in this form the room already looked better), and on the walls you can make any drawings you want.
