We sew a sofa cover. Covers for a corner sofa. Variant of a stretch cover for a sofa from a single piece of fabric

Designers say that with the help of covers you can refresh any product. However, it is often not possible to purchase the necessary decor element. In most cases, buyers simply cannot find the best suitable model. And if you still come across one, the cost may be too high and the purchase has to be abandoned.

Experienced needlewomen are convinced that any kind of products can be made by novice craftsmen. The main thing is to follow the instructions. In this article, we will study the technology of making covers for a corner sofa with our own hands. Consider how simple options, as well as more complex ones.

Necessary materials and tools

To realize your idea, you need to be well prepared. It is better to start by choosing the fabric that will be used to create the idea. Professional seamstresses note that it is much easier to work with knitted material. Especially if the sofa has an uneven back. Although novice masters can choose a different option. But at the same time, you need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to work hard on the work. You will also need the following tools for creativity:

  • large tailor's scissors;
  • piece of chalk;
  • tape measure;
  • special pins;
  • a piece of paper and a pen.

Measurement technology

Obviously, the easiest way is to make do-it-yourself covers for a corner sofa, which consists of even rectangles and squares. If the studied piece of furniture is decorated with a carved back, you should not be upset. You just need to use any stretchy material. But in any case, you should first measure the sofa. To think over the work, build a pattern and sew a beautiful cover, you need to find out the following parameters:

  • sofa height;
  • the length of each backrest - from the corner to the armrest;
  • the width of each backrest - from the highest point to the seat;
  • length, width and height of each seat.

When cutting a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands, it is important to consider that the length of the backrest of interest is not equal to the length of the corresponding seat. And the difference between the first and second parameters will help to draw a diagonal - the junction of the two parts of the corner sofa. But more on that later.

Cover-cape

Experienced needlewomen advise craftsmen who are just starting to master the technology not to take on complex products. The first step is to make a cover that looks more like a cape. For its implementation, you can prepare any fabric, even more dense. But at the same time, you should remember that it will have to be flashed. And the thicker the material, the more difficult it will be to do. In any case, the first step is to prepare the fabric and build a pattern on it according to the image proposed below.

However, it must first be adjusted to the size of your piece of furniture. It is also worth noting that when you manage to cut a cover on a corner sofa with your own hands, its edges can be carefully wrapped, framed with a satin ribbon, or tied with a hook. The most preferred option, each needlewoman must choose independently.

How to cut a one-piece case

If the reader decides to perform this version of the product under study, it is immediately worth preparing for the fact that he will have to tinker with it. Especially at the stage of cutting out the details. However, you should not be afraid, the technology is quite accessible even for beginners. After all, further we will explain in detail how to make a cover pattern for a corner sofa with our own hands:

  1. We prepare a piece of fabric, the width of which is equal to the sum of the following parameters: sofa height + backrest width + seat length + seat height. And the length is the sum of the lengths of both backs + two sofa heights.
  2. We spread the prepared piece of material.
  3. With help measuring tape and chalk mark the indicated points.
  4. Then add the length of each seat.
  5. We lower two vertical lines to the bottom edge of the canvas.
  6. We draw diagonals from the end of each horizontal segment to the junction of two backs.
  7. Thus, we manage to outline the "house" that should be cut out. It is shaded gray in the diagram.

One-Piece Case Assembly

Having prepared the part right size Let's start stitching. To do this, we use a typewriter or work manually with a needle and thread. Our task is to connect the two parts of the seat together, stitching the sides that were formed after cutting out the extra "house".

In the diagram, the junction is indicated by a red zigzag line. Next, fold the canvas, separating the main part of the sofa from the backs. The fold points are indicated by green zigzag lines. As you can see, sewing a cover on a corner sofa with your own hands is much easier than cutting it. However, we have not finished our work yet. We folded the canvas, as a result of which we managed to form two backs. Now you should flash them along the zigzag lines marked in blue on the diagram.

At this stage, it is safe to say that the main part of the work is behind. In fact, we have already managed to make a cover for a corner sofa. But in order for it not to slip when sitting, it should be supplemented with an elastic band, which must be sewn along the entire lower edge of the resulting frame.

Pattern of a stylish cover with a frill

Cutting this version of the product is no more difficult than the previous one. But it is important to understand that in this case, the work involves somewhat different actions. Experienced needlewomen say that readers who get tired of a one-piece case sewn according to previously studied instructions can easily turn it into a stylish model with a frill. To do this, you just need to determine the length of the frill, and then cut off the strip of the desired width along the bottom edge.

If you have to cut out a cover for a corner sofa with your own hands, the photo scheme proposed above should be slightly corrected. However, it is important to consider that a smaller rectangle is required to implement the idea. That is, its width will be less than the sum of the following parameters: sofa height + backrest width + seat length + seat height. The difference will be as much as the length of the frill is intended. Accordingly, the length will also decrease: (the sum of the lengths of both backs + two sofa heights) - the length of the frill.

After making simple calculations, we go to the store and buy the desired cut. It is also important not to forget about the frill. Traditionally, it is made from cotton. Light and airy fabric is less commonly used. For example, organza. But in this case, it is required to make a multilayer frill so that the shabby sofa does not show through. It is also important to consider that the length of the frill should be one and a half to two times longer than the length of the bottom edge, because this part will be wavy, and this can only be achieved if you use more material.

Assembling the cover with a frill

As you can see, you can make any kind of covers for a corner sofa with your own hands. The photos proposed in the article demonstrate that it is best to use any stretchy fabric to create this thing. Mostly knitwear. The cover with a frill is sewn in the same way as the whole one. And then a frill is sewn along the bottom edge. Moreover, experienced needlewomen advise pre-attaching it to an elastic band. This will create neat and smooth "waves". It is also worth processing the bottom edge of the frill so that it does not crumble, and the product looks more presentable and expensive. If desired, it can be decorated with a satin ribbon of a suitable color.

Cover pattern for a corner sofa and armchair

Many novice needlewomen do not dare to give shabby interior items new life, because they are afraid of not coping with the task. We dismantled the technology on the sofa. We hope it will help readers create a really beautiful and original item that will brighten up any room. But the method of sewing a chair cover has not yet been studied. But professional craftswomen like to joke that for those who managed to successfully cope with a cover for a corner sofa, cutting and sewing a similar product for an armchair will seem like a real fairy tale.

According to reviews of corner sofa covers (photos of the best options are presented in the article), if you delve into the process, this statement can be considered justified. Because the chair, like a regular sofa, does not have a complicated angle. This means that it does not require the construction of a pattern taking into account this detail. Thus, we need a rectangle whose width is: chair height + back width + seat length + seat height. And the length is the length of a single back + two chair heights. Similarly, the size of the rectangle required for sewing a cover on a regular sofa is calculated.

Assembling a cover for an armchair or regular sofa

It is important to note that, unlike the do-it-yourself pattern of a cover for a corner sofa, the photo of which we studied in one of the following paragraphs, this option does not involve cutting out an extra detail. We only need to fold the canvas, stepping back from each edge of the height of the chair. In the diagram, the folds are marked with a green zigzag line. And then, highlighting the armrests, flash the sides marked in blue.

As you can see, the technology is quite simple and accessible to beginners. Therefore, professional needlewomen recommend starting with sewing a chair cover, and then moving on to more difficult option of the product under study for the corner sofa.

In the article, we presented photos of beautiful covers for a corner sofa. The novelty, undoubtedly, will decorate any interior and will allow demonstrating the taste and skill of the household.

Covers for upholstered furniture prolong the period of its use or allow you to breathe new life into the old one without resorting to a rather complicated and expensive restoration. Sewing a decent sofa cover with your own hands is within the power of any housewife who has a sewing machine at her disposal. How, for example, a sofa cover is sewn in one evening, see the video tutorial:

However, depending on the design of the sofa, its purpose and how it is used in the house, covers may be the best for this sofa. different types. Finally, the most detailed lesson concerns one particular piece of furniture, and what if your sofa is exactly like that? Or do you want a cover for exactly the same? This article discusses how to design and sew a cover for a sofa of any type yourself, if only you could imagine how you want to see your favorite rookery.

No pattern

It is believed that the cover for the sofa is sewn in general in the same way as for the armchair. This is true when it comes to a cut case. But if you make a cape for a chair without a pattern, it will go astray all the time: the area of adhesion of the fabric of the cover with the seat and back is small. But it is quite possible to sew a cover on a sofa without a pattern. And he can look amazing. Just do not flatter yourself: firstly, a lot of fabric will go away. The cut will need a width of approx. 5 seat widths and a length of 2.5-2.7 sofa lengths. Secondly, the work will be quite painstaking; for an everyday cover, it would probably be easier to develop a pattern (see below). But, we emphasize: it will be much more difficult to sew the same luxurious case with cutting. And if a sofa with a collapse of the armrests and a bend / tilt of the curly back, then without solid sewing experience it is hardly possible. And without a pattern - without significant problems. At the cost of increased fabric consumption.

How to sew a sofa cover without a pattern is shown in the figure:

We give key explanations. At pos. 3 shows the reinforcement of the seams on the border of the seat with the backrest and armrests (see below); A cover without reinforced seams will constantly go astray. After marking under the reinforced seams, the cover blank is removed, the seams are stitched with reinforcement, the blank is put back on, the reinforced seams are straightened along the contour of the seat, fixed with pins (not English) on the sofa and continue to work.

Note: at the stage according to pos. 4 folds on the front overhang of the seat must be assembled so that the cover fabric lies along the curb line evenly, but without noticeable tension. Why - see below.

Now the hardest part begins. The fact is that a cover of this type is always made with an elastic band so that it can be removed for washing or, conversely, worn on special occasions - such covers in middle-income houses are mostly front doors. The elastic is inserted along the line of the sofa border (see below), but try to achieve a neat pick-up of her sleeve if you sew it (from the inside, of course) onto the blank removed from the sofa! And without it, the whole view is lost. Here you will have to work with your hands or, perhaps, with a manual mini-sewing machine. The patch of the sleeve (drawstring) under the elastic in this case is the following. way:

  • We drive the folds on the sidewalls along the border line to the rear corners and sweep them onto a live thread;
  • If the sofa has a collapse of the armrests and / or with an inclination / bending of the back, we measure its overall dimensions, i.e. dimensions of the projection of the sofa on the floor (see, for example, pos. 6);
  • We cut out 2 strips of fabric with a width of 5 cm for drawstrings, the same as for the cover. One drawstring - U-shaped, on the facade and sidewalls. The second is direct to the rear;
  • We apply a U-shaped drawstring, with fixation with pins, along the line overall dimensions so that the tails at the back are of equal length, and mark the front corners on the drawstring;
  • We remove the workpiece and turn it inside out (carefully, do not break the mark of the rear corners!);
  • We sew the P-drawstring from the inside: first at the front corners, then we attach along the facade, then we sew the sidewalls;
  • We also sew the back straight drawstring;
  • We pass the elastic and sew its edges with an overlap of approx. 5 cm. Elastic band length - approx. 15% less than the length of the perimeter of the sofa along the border line;
  • We remove the crease mark on the rear corners;
  • We turn the blank on the face and manually evenly pick up the folds over the elastic. Or uneven, that's up to your taste;
  • We fix the resulting decorative folds with a stitch (do not grab the elastic!) On the facade and sidewalls separately. Previously formed monumental folds on the armrests are not stitched! To pull off the cover if necessary, stretching the back drawstring and not stitched front corners is enough;
  • We put a cover on the sofa (pos. 6) and admire. Or we swear, unzip everything and do it again.

Note: the work of sewing on the drawstrings and picking up the folds over the elastic is greatly simplified if there is a mini sewing machine for sewing on weight - then the workpiece from the sofa can not be removed.

About reinforced seams

Strengthening the seams in the sofa cover may, firstly, be needed not only along the contour of the seat. Secondly, reinforced seams can also serve as decorative piping.

The first way to reinforce the seam is illustrated by pos. 1-5 fig. It is applicable for cut covers made of fairly dense fabrics. So that the insert sleeve with a cord does not wrinkle, it is sewn, slightly pulling it towards itself and bending it on the edge of the machine table (pos. 3): let it pull itself, and the sleeve itself folds. Only its very end is folded with fingers, pos. 4.

If the fabric of the cover is thin or it is sewn without a pattern, a seam reinforcement scheme is used according to pos. 6. Allowance for hem 2x30 mm. In the case of sewing a cover without a pattern, the allowance must be chopped off with safety pins already when laying out the fabric on the seat (pos. 3 in the figure with the stages of sewing without a pattern). There is a nuance here: the reinforced seam along the contour of the seat is always turned inside out: this way it is not felt by what they are sitting on, and the cover is less dusty and less likely to require cleaning. Therefore, stages 1-3 in Fig. with sewing steps without a pattern is made with the fabric inside out and turned face up for steps 4-6.

Cut in place

It is technologically easier to cut a cover for a sofa in place, and sewing a front cover without a pattern, and developing patterns for a cover, is also quite economical: up to 25% of the cut area is wasted, depending on the thickness of the seat and back. This method is suitable for simple-shaped sofas.

With cutting in place, a trace is sewn. sofa covers:

  • Covers for geometrically simple folding sofas without armrests, common in interiors modern styles, and on book sofas, see below.
  • Linings (pouch covers) made of technical fabric for dress covers sewn without a pattern, so as not to mess with the pattern of the pouches.
  • Everyday saving cases (pos. 3 in the figure), incl. on the sofa in the front cover.

How to sew a cover on a sofa with cutting in place is shown in pos. 1 and 2 fig.:

The recommendation to reinforce the seams with wooden inserts is most likely either an unqualified translation of the original source, or just an intuitive guess. In fact, folds are formed with suitable pieces of wood for reinforcing the seams with a collar, see above. If the pieces of wood are left in the seams, they will soon wipe both the cover and the upholstery of the sofa. At pos. 4 gives examples of how to decorate the wing covers on the armrests; Of course, your own solutions are also possible. If covers are required only for the armrests, they are designed in the same way; tissue waste in this case is zero or almost zero.

Note: covers separately for the armrests and, possibly, the back of the sofa, it is advisable to sew if it is in public place or, say, in a frequently visited hallway or on the veranda of a private house.

About the role of the undercase

The undercover, firstly, improves the grip of the cover made of beautiful but slippery fabric with the sofa. In this case, it is sewn from thin cotton fabric, for example, linen. Old yellowed sheets are perfect, the undercover of them holds the satin cover on the fitted faux leather sofa as sewn on.

Another purpose of the undercover is to protect the sofa itself from dirt and grease. If the sofa is leather, this is very important. In this case, the undercover is sewn in 3-layer: a fairly dense technical fabric (linen canvas, matting; it is possible - propylene from bags) is laid on the upholstery of the sofa, then a layer of synthetic winterizer or, better, holofiber follows, and the cover holds the canvas, as in the previous one. case.

For a book

What is a eurobook sofa, now thanks to Ikea everyone knows, see fig.:

It is not said as a reproach: sofa-books are really, very comfortable, and sometimes indispensable in small-sized odnushki-dvushki. It should only be noted that sofa beds of exactly the same design were produced in the USSR even when not every layman heard about the embryo of the EU in the form of the Benelux and in Europe. True, sofas-"sovknizhki" came to furniture stores in single copies, which were with a small factory marriage. Conditioning were distributed at the top according to the distribution list or bought up by blat admitted to the hairy hands of Ivan Ivanovich. According to rumors, just such a sofa bed stood in the Dnepropetrovsk (in his hometown) apartment of Ivan Ivanovich himself of all Ivan Ivanovichs - the unforgettable Leonid Ilyich. It is quite plausible: he was a simple and good man, only weak for his post. This is probably why they chose it, when the bald clown in power turned out to be no better than the mustachioed monster. But back to the topic.

You need at least 2 separate covers for the sofa book, or 3 if you want the folded back to not stand out in color. You may need to cover the armrests as well; then you will need 4 or 5 separate covers. Covers for the armrests of the sofa-book are cut in place, as described above, but with one condition: at the bottom, under the underside of the armrests, they must be tightly fastened with a zipper with large teeth, otherwise the mechanism will be all the time to tighten and soon tear; the option with a rubber band does not save from this. In fact, covers for the armrests of book sofas are their sore spot, which, as far as we know, has not yet been cured by anyone.

There are no problems with sofa-book mattress covers. The pattern is given on the left in Fig. with sizes for popular models:

How the corners are stitched is shown in the center. The cover of the sofa-book is pulled together with an elastic band (on the right in the figure), but first you need to mark the armhole in place along the mechanism. It is a simple straight cut under the boss that enters the cutout of the lever and is turned with trouser tape; the bias tape wears out soon. From the underside, the armhole is pulled together with an elastic band. To put on or take off the cover, you will first need to remove the lever mechanism; this is done simply by hand without tools, see instructions for sofas.

According to the pattern

The sofa cover, sewn according to a self-constructed pattern, is the first to use the cutting area to the fullest extent. Considering that the fabric for a beautiful cover is required somewhere between $30-$50, this is not unimportant. Second, only a home-made pattern can be used to sew a truly original and unique product.

Note: the sofa border line is located either 10-25 cm above the floor, or at the height of the transition vertical surfaces armrests in inclined.

Learning how to make patterns for upholstered furniture covers is not that difficult; much easier than for clothes. To get started, you can watch a video course on designing covers for upholstered furniture:

Video: lesson on cutting furniture covers

When starting to build patterns with no experience or with initial experience in sewing, there is something else to consider. To build a pattern of a sewing part in size, you will have, firstly, to remove at least a dozen of them from the sofa (see on the left in the figure), but this still does not solve the problem.

For example, for the same sample, it will also be necessary to measure the length of the generatrix (curved part) of the backrest and the length of the rounding of the armrests. If the sofa is of an extremely simple shape, the pattern can be made up of rectangles (on the right in the figure), but in both cases it is necessary to take into account the tightening of the fabric, but here you can’t do without experience. Professional seamstresses in production have a saying: “You can tighten everything, but how will it be worn?” A cover made of overstretched fabric will not look good, and will soon spread.

For beginners, it is better to build patterns for a cover for a sofa or other upholstered furniture and sew it in a 3-stage way. By the way, well-known couturiers willingly use it, only they buy special paper. In general, the same as mentioned below, but in rolls and not printed. The procedure is:

  • Glue newspapers into sheets of the desired size;
  • Having applied the cloth to the surface to be worked on, for example, the seat, smoothly smooth it from the middle to the edges. If you can't get the wrinkles out of the newsprint, stop! Here is the edge of the current part and the beginning of the next;
  • Along the marked edges of the part, its paper pattern is cut out;
  • According to newspaper patterns, a pouch is cut with a double-triple allowance for seams;
  • Sweep and adjust the details of the pouch in place, achieving an even fit;
  • According to the fitted details of the pouch, cut out patterns for the details of the cover from thick glued paper (for example, drawing paper);
  • Sew and put on a pouch, and then a cover.

essence this method in that thin, unglued paper stretches to the point of tearing or wrinkling in much the same way as stiff fabric. That is, if the newspaper was flattened in nature, then the fabric will fit it evenly, but without constriction. It is only necessary to glue the newspapers into panels so that the adhesive seam does not prevent the paper from stretching. Once upon a time, for this, tailors glued newspapers with gum arabic, which gives an elastic seam, and in our time, its full-fledged replacement is an office glue stick. It is desirable to glue with “pokes”, like tailors of the old time: we press the pencil to the paper, turn it, apply the glued one. The next poke is after 5-7 cm.

How about an angle

The most difficult thing is to sew a cover on a corner sofa. It is always sewn in parts, and here 2 options are possible. First - corner section attached, left to the next. rice. It is necessary to sew 5 covers: on the main section, attached, back, armrests, with a reinforced seam.

The second is a plug-in corner section (on the right in the figure) or a one-piece sofa (in the center). In this case, the covers are cut and sewn separately on the wings and corner of the sofa and grinded together from the inside. The main thing here is to hide the seams between the wings and the corner, because. they will fit on the seat and back. The best way for this - pleated, in the center in the figure, but this is a complicated matter, and it is not much easier to work with factory-pleated fabrics. The other is to choose the color of the cover fabric so that the seam is lost in it, on the right in Fig. And there is another trick.

How often do we start home alterations? The soul needs change and this is quite normal. Sometimes the personal desire of the owner becomes the reason for the alteration. However, most often a situation occurs when the owners are forced to, so to speak, repair pieces of furniture that have become unusable or worn out. Very often this story concerns sofas. This piece of furniture, as a rule, wears out faster than others, and the reason for this is our favorite pastime after work.

As a rule, in despair, the household decides to completely change the covers by the sofa. However, this pleasure is not cheap. Changing sofa covers sometimes costs as much as buying a new one. In addition, you will have to disassemble the sofa and transport it to the workshop, and then back. So why not make your life easier and sew covers yourself?

Wise housewives take the situation into their own hands and decide to sew a cover for furniture with their own hands. Great way out. Moreover, in this case, there is no need to search for a good master. We are now our own masters and can do everything with our own hands. And the step-by-step instructions below will help us in this matter.

Tools and materials

Perhaps every housewife will find materials and tools for sewing a sofa. Except for the material itself and the sewing machine. But in our time, finding these items will not be a big problem.

From small parts we will need:

  • spool of thread,
  • scissors,
  • pins for fastening parts of the fabric on the wrong side,
  • roulette.

As a material for the cover itself, you can use both light upholstery fabrics and dense ones. The choice is big enough. The most important thing is that the color of the cover is combined with the interior in the room.

As a rule, a cover for a medium-sized sofa requires approximately 8 meters of fabric. We advise you to buy fabrics in the store for 1.5-2 meters more. If the fabric remains, then you can try to sew sofa cushions. These pillows will complement the new decor in the room.

Sofa cover patterns

Undoubtedly, it will be very, very difficult to cope without basic sewing skills and working on a sewing machine. Do not despair, because this is a matter of time. Learn for everyone.

All sofas have an individual shape, so you probably won’t be able to use standard patterns. But for an example, you can familiarize yourself with the pattern below.

Do not skimp on the material for the cover. Work across the entire width of the canvas. Make all patterns with your own hands. Do not worry if the cover does not fit snugly around the sofa, styles are different.

Step by step instructions for sewing a sofa cover

Below is an example of sewing a sofa cover. A small sofa is taken as a basis, on the example of which we will show how to sew a cover and transform this piece of furniture. In addition, a similar cover can also be sewn on a chair. We'll show you how to make loose pleats at the bottom of a sofa. Thanks to them, it will be easy to put on a cover on any product.

On a note! It is worth noting that it took about 3.5 meters of fabric to sew the presented sofa.

How to sew a sofa cover with your own hands? You will receive the most detailed answer below.

1 step: Throw the fabric over the sofa wrong side up. Position it as for the finished case.

2 step: If there is not enough fabric, consider extensions from additional material. In addition, pockets can be sewn on the back wall, in which you can put various little things. It is very convenient and practical.

4 step: Peel off the sofa cover at all intended seams.

5 step: In the right places, make cuts to connect the parts of the cover.

On a note! The most scrupulous place is the side folds of the sofa cover. The rectangular canvas of the back goes forward and closes the counter. It is necessary to cut the fabric from the “sitting” part of the sofa in the selected place and grind off with the back. Moreover, you need to cut the rectangle so that it turns out without excess. Parts for stitching need to be connected with pins. Do not forget that the fabric still remains wrong side up.

7 step: Turn the folded cover right side out and put it back on the sofa. The cover should be freely put on the sofa and fit it from all sides. You can sew the product, making sure that it fits well on the sofa!

9 step: Separately, I would like to pay attention to the frill of the sofa. On the frill, you can make folds for a special design of the cover and its free fit on the sofa. The folds are made about 2 cm deep. The distance between the folds is determined independently, depending on personal preferences. You can use a small ruler or other object to mark even spaces on the furniture fabric.

How to sew a sofa cover: step by step instructions

The sofa is the main "character" in the living room. And if his condition leaves much to be desired, it immediately catches the eye. Even with careful handling, the upholstery quickly rubs off and begins to shine. And if small children or pets regularly frolic on the sofa, then you can’t count on its safety at all. Scuffs, stains, puffs on upholstered furniture will by no means add respectability to your home. You can save the sofa in its original form or give it a new life with the help of a removable cover. But finding a cape in the store that fits perfectly into the interior and fits in size is not so easy. We will tell you how to sew a sofa cover with your own hands and make your furniture stylish and spectacular.

Advantages and disadvantages of sofa covers

The benefits of using self-made removable covers are obvious, as they:

  • mask the defects of old furniture;
  • much cheaper than a full upholstery hauling;
  • give the interior a uniqueness;
  • do not require expensive cleaning;
  • easily removed for washing or repair;
  • allow you to quickly change the look of the room.

Among the shortcomings can be noted:

  • the need for additional expenditure of money and time;
  • if the sofa serves as a sleeping place, and the cover prevents it from unfolding, the removable “upholstery” will need to be removed and put on daily;
  • choosing a fabric that will not shrink and become spooled is not so easy.

You can combine disparate pieces of upholstered furniture using the same removable covers.

Choosing fabric for the cover

The right choice of material for the cover is half the battle. It depends on how long it will last you. Furniture protection should reliably protect the surface from dust and other contaminants, be durable and pleasant to the touch.

When choosing a material, it is necessary to build on the purpose of the sofa. If it is used as a bed, you should give preference to durable artificial fabrics - flock, velor, chenille. Intensive operation even for 12 years is not able to violate their integrity. At the same time, they do not lose color under the influence of ultraviolet radiation and do not shed.

Case for children's sofa must comply with environmental and safety requirements. In this case, the best choice is jacquard.

For the living room, a flock cover with a velvety texture is perfect - cozy, soft and at the same time incredibly durable and easy to clean material.

To make the cover impregnable for the ubiquitous cat's claws, it should be made from a special fabric called relax. The material is similar to leather, contains a strong thick pile and a layer of isoprene. Due to these features, the appearance of puffs on the surface is excluded.

Characteristics of various fabrics

  1. Velor - synthetic or natural material with a velvety texture, with high wear resistance.
  2. Flock is a high-strength, but soft and delicate to the touch fabric. Not subject to deformation and color changes. Any stains are easily removed from the surface, the material does not electrify and does not attract dust.
  3. Cotton - allows you to create bright capes for furniture. The natural composition makes it safe for the human body.
  4. Jacquard is a durable double-sided fabric. The presence of cotton, polyester and elastane in the composition makes the material resistant to deformation and damage.

Case shape and design

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the cover, it is necessary to think over its shape and determine the size. Exist various models. The cape can completely cover the elements of the sofa along with the legs and create the illusion of a holistic floating object. Such products are suitable for classic, romantic, modern, English interiors.

Connoisseurs of modern styles will find covers that perfectly match the dimensions of the furniture or models presented as separate covers for the seat and armrests. In this case, there is a taboo on any embellishments - ruffles, bows, flounces. A good find for decorating such options is simple organizers in the form of pockets placed on the outside of the armrest. This is a great bonus for lovers of reading and applications. The pocket can hold a magazine, plain or e-book, tablet, headphones, diary and many other little things you need. Such models fit perfectly into high-tech and country, minimalism or eco-style.

The size and model of the cover affects the choice of fabric colors. If the canvas completely covers the furniture, then you should focus only on the general color palette of a particular interior. If this is just a small cape, it should be in harmony with the upholstery.

How to take measurements and determine the size

In order for the case to sit like a glove, it is necessary to make careful measurements and choose the right size. Products can be double, angular or dimensionless. To understand which product will be optimal in your case, you should measure the height of the sofa, as well as the length of its back.   • threads;
  • needles;
  • safety pins;
  • wooden planks;
  • sewing machine.

Be sure to organize a spacious workplace, on which it will be convenient to create a drawing, cut out parts and assemble the product. The ideal option is a large folding table.

Cutting out details

To create a pattern, you need to measure the furniture and transfer the measurements to paper, observing all the bends and protrusions of the sofa. This is a rather complicated matter, so we propose to simplify the task. Take an old case, rip it apart and make a pattern on it. Transfer the outline to paper or directly to fabric. If there is a shuttlecock on the cover, then this detail can be drawn later. The finished pattern should be cut out, attached to the wrong side of the fabric and circled with chalk.   • we transfer the drawing to the fabric - it is advisable to choose an elastic material;
  • cut out the details along the contour;
  • we outline the area on which the elastic will be located;
  • we connect the pieces of fabric together - since the cover is a combination of several elements, the parts for the back, armrests and seat are assembled separately;
  • we sew all the seams on the machine.

After completing all the steps, the protective coating for the click-clack or eurobook sofa will be completely finished.

  • attach the material to the sofa with safety pins;
  • designate with pins the sides, seat, back, armrests;

  • cut off excess fabric, not forgetting to leave allowances for seams;
  • connect the cut parts in pairs. We sew separately the elements of the back and seat;
  • Unscrew the covers and try on the furniture. If necessary, mark the problem areas where you need to narrow or push the seam apart;
  • we correct the shortcomings and lay the seams on the typewriter.

Sewing a cover for a sofa with armrests

  1. Taking measurements from furniture. It is necessary to determine the main parameters - the length and width of the sofa, as well as measure the armrests. The width of this element is the distance from the floor to the top.
  2. We build a pattern based on the measurements obtained.
  3. We transfer the contour of the details to the fabric, retreating 1 cm to form allowances.
  4. We collect covers for separate parts - back, seat, armrests;
  5. We connect the parts together by hand and fix with a machine seam.

The elastic band is incredibly comfortable. It is ideal for a regular three-seater sofa or an accordion-type device. The second name of this option is eurocover. It stretches perfectly, tightly hugging the sofa, it is well fixed on the product, it does not move out. In order to make it, you should:

  • make accurate measurements of the length and width of the sofa;
  • add an additional 5-7 cm to the dimensions for attaching the elastic band;
  • cut out the future product, taking into account allowances;
  • sew an elastic band with a sewing machine, bending the fabric around the edges;
  • to make a fitting in order to identify a loose fit.
  • correct deficiencies;
  • stitch the seams.

The size of the cover should match the dimensions of the furniture and fit snugly against the surface of the sofa.

Decorating Ideas

There are a huge number of options for decorating a sofa cover. It all depends on the scope of the imagination and the capabilities of the artist. An equally important role in the choice of decor is played by the general style of the room, its purpose.

Ruffles and bows, so organic in classic and romanticism, are completely unacceptable in loft or minimalism style. The cover for a children's sofa can be decorated with bright applications, and in the living room such patches will look strange. However, the choice is yours, be guided by your own taste and create your own unique interior in which you will feel comfortable and organic.

For decorating the cover are perfect:

  • shuttlecocks;
  • ruffles;
  • stitch;
  • decorative cords;
  • contrast fabrics;
  • bows and ribbons;
  • lace;
  • braid;
  • pockets;
  • flat and voluminous applications.

How to tie a cover with your own hands

A knitted cover has some advantages over fabric products. Firstly, it is elastic, so it will easily repeat the shape and curves of furniture. Secondly, a do-it-yourself thing is always valuable and unique. Thirdly, the coating is soft, warm and cozy. Fourthly, you can choose any pattern or make a composition from different options.

Knitted elements can be combined with fabric, leather, lace. Patchwork technique provides a huge field for imagination.

First of all, it is worth deciding with what tool you will knit. If you have a knitting machine and you know how to work with this device, then making a cover in a few days is not a problem for you. Manual devices are inferior in speed to electric ones, but they also allow you to quickly perform such work. Computer-controlled machines easily knit patterns according to given patterns. If desired, using such a system, knitting covers can be turned into your own business.

Another thing is if you only have a hook or knitting needles at your disposal. In this case, the process will be long and rather complicated. But if you love this activity, then making a cape will bring you nothing but pleasure.

The cover can be tied with a single cloth - this is quite difficult, since its mass will become larger over time. Another option is to make many separate motifs and subsequently connect them together. Patterns and colors of items may vary. The main thing is that they are in harmony with each other and with the rest of the interior. You can tie pillow cases or a cape on an ottoman in support of the cover.

To make a knitted cover you will need:

  • strong, dense threads that will not roll, otherwise the cover will very quickly lose its presentable appearance;
  • working tool - hook, knitting needles, knitting machine.

Before you start knitting, you need to measure the sofa and create a pattern. It will guide you through the manufacturing process. If the bedspread will consist of motifs, calculate their number in advance. Measure the area of the pattern itself and the test sample, and calculate how many fragments you will need and how many skeins of yarn you will have to buy.

Conclusion

If you want to make a sofa cover yourself, choose the method that suits you and feel free to get to work. A little imagination, patience, and soon your house will be decorated with a spectacular and exclusive creation of your hands.

Material

Any work related to needlework begins with the choice of fabric. When choosing a fabric, it should be borne in mind that the main function of the cover is to protect the sofa upholstery from dust and various contaminants.

In order to sew an element on a sofa, you can purchase any material, the assortment is rich. Very popular are:

Each fabric has its own characteristics and properties. Which material is better, no one will say. When choosing, you need to pay attention to the composition of the fiber. For furniture, preference is given to the material in the composition, which contains wool and cotton.

Velours
Jacquard
microfiber
Flock
Cotton

The fabric for the cover must meet the requirements:

  • practicality is important - the fabric should not require complex care;
  • hypoallergy - a person spends a lot of time on the sofa, the fabric must be safe for people's health;
  • should not accumulate static electricity;
  • it is desirable that the cover can be washed or dry-cleaned in the future;
  • the fabric should be soft to the touch and at the same time dense;
  • The color should last for a long time.
  • external bright view- this is not the main indicator. The fabric must be durable;
  • if there are kids and children in the house, then the fabric should be chosen durable and resistant to dirt, sharp claws;
  • good fabric with a special impregnation of fat and water repellent. Then the housewives will not be afraid of spilled tea, overturned food. The advantage of this material is that the cover is easily washed.

Process steps

Do not choose a complex cut cover. Even a sofa with curly handrails, with an unusual shape of the back. A cover for a corner sofa or clack can also be simple in cut. When the fabric is selected, it remains to calculate the footage. To facilitate the work, preference should be given to volumetric models, or models that cover the back of the sofa and handrails.

If upholstered furniture without armrests, you can get by with a cape. Its sizes are different. If there are no skills in working with a needle, but you want to sew a practical fabric decor item for a sofa, then an easy way is to make a cape.

Volumetric models are easy to cut, but the fabric takes a little more. Calculating the footage is easy:

  • measure the height and width of the back of the sofa;
  • measure the dimensions of the handrails;
  • estimate how the details will be located on the fabric when cutting;
  • add a few centimeters on all sides for seam allowances;
  • add 10-15 centimeters for hem and trim.

Volumetric models are often sewn in one piece. The cover stretches over the entire sofa, attached to the armrests. Straps, straps, buttons, buttons are used as fasteners. The attached photo on the right shows different ways decoration. When the model is invented, you need to prepare everything you need for work and you can start sewing covers for sofas.

Materials and tools

Consider the manufacture of a cover of the simplest type - a cape. In this model, you will need to sew a cape on the sofa, solid for the back and seat. Separately cut and sew the armrests, connect the parts into a single whole and arrange the finished product. Everything is done simply.

To work you will need the following:

  • fabric, footage is calculated according to the size of the sofa;
  • tape measure;
  • tailor's chalk;
  • sewing pins and needles;
  • wooden ruler;
  • threads (preferably with lavsan for a sewing machine);
  • scissors;
  • pattern paper

When everything is prepared, you need to cut the cover. How to sew sofa covers with your own hands is written below.

Cutting out details

Using a centimeter, measure the backs and armrests of the sofa. According to the obtained dimensions, draw on paper. Do not rush to do everything at once on the fabric. The proverb that it is better to measure seven times and cut only once is very true in this case. A lot of fabric is used on the cover and an incorrectly cut piece will overshadow the whole work. Therefore, it is more practical to first cut everything out on paper and attach it to the sofa, see if the size fits.

The pattern must first be applied to paper

When everything is checked that the drawing fits perfectly, you can start cutting on the fabric:

  • iron the fabric through damp gauze. Cotton or wool fabrics are best washed in warm water. This must be done so that the material shrinks, and subsequently, the finished product does not become smaller;
  • fold the fabric right side inward. Pin the drawings with safety pins;
  • trace the outline of the paper with tailor's chalk. After 1.5-2 cm, draw a second line;
  • cut along the second line.

Details are cut out, you can start sewing.

Sewing

Work begins with a blueprint. The video in the article shows all the stages of work.

  • fold the patterns with the right side inward;
  • sweep with temporary screeds;
  • the resulting cover immediately try on the sofa.

If the result suits, then all seams are ground. Bend all the edges, sweep again, check the evenness along the bottom, then scribble. The stitching will take literally half an hour or an hour. The complexity of sewing is only that the details are voluminous, it is difficult to move the fabric under the needle. If you are interested in how to sew a cover on the armrest of a sofa, then you need to look at the photo on the left. The working methods are the same as for a regular cape.

When everything is sewn, it remains to decorate the resulting product. Ribbons, pockets will be used. You need to think in advance what kind of ties, fasteners will be. All this should be outlined when cutting.

After decorating, put the product on your sofa. Sewn cover for the sofa with your own hands, ready. You can invite loved ones to see and sit on your favorite, but already a new sofa.

Allowances are trimmed
The cover is turned inside out and tried on for adjustments.

Step-by-step instructions for sewing a sofa cover with your own hands

Any housewife dreams of protecting her upholstered furniture from the negative impact of various factors on it. The desire not only to extend the life of your favorite sofa, but also to ensure cleanliness, cannot be translated into reality without the use of covers. There are two options for solving this issue: you can either buy capes or make your own. Having studied the information on how to sew a cover on a sofa with your own hands: a step-by-step instruction, even a person who does not have needlework experience will be able to carry out this creative work. A beautiful sofa cover can change the design of the room, decorating the interior and emphasizing its individual details.

Purpose

When discussing the purpose of upholstered furniture covers, it is appropriate to recall the expression that a problem is easier to prevent than to solve. Sofas and armchairs are an important and expensive part of home comfort. Their main disadvantage is the rapid wear of the upholstery fabric and exposure to persistent marks from food, drinks, animal hair and cat claws.

After repairs carried out in the house, expensive furniture may not fit into new interior or just get bored. Do-it-yourself sofa covers can solve all of the above problems. It is fair to say that such coatings:

  • protect factory upholstery from dirt;
  • are an element of decor;
  • help to fit old upholstered furniture into a new interior;
  • allow the owners of the sofa to change its appearance, for example, depending on the season.

There are a number of arguments in favor of making covers with your own hands:

  1. Saving money.
  2. Possibility of individual measurement and tailoring.
  3. A wide selection of fabrics, textures and decor.
  4. The possibility of frequent updating of the upholstery for a new interior.
  5. Lack of fear for damage to the factory cover by children and animals.

Despite the fact that modern upholstery fabrics have become more reliable and diverse, they still have a certain wear resistance limit.

Choosing the right shape and design

Before proceeding with sewing covers, it should be borne in mind that furniture can have a different shape: rectangular, angular, shells. Sofa covers should clearly correspond not only to the shape of the sofa, but also to its size.

All covers have their own functional varieties, depending on the purpose of their application. Consider the main options:

  1. Eurocover. It is sewn from a special textile material that takes any sofa shape. This fabric consists of special fibers with excellent elasticity. These capes are very practical. When sewing them, you do not need to make careful measurements of the sofa. They are perfect for corner models of any configuration.
  2. Covers on an elastic band are easily stretched on a sofa and fixed thanks to the sewn-in elastic band. This coating is easy to make yourself even without a pattern.
  3. Universal simple covers are made of elastic material. They are easy to make with your own hands. Such sofa decks consist of two layers of special stretching textiles.
  4. Cases with a "skirt" at the bottom are frills located along the bottom of the product. When sewing, frills can also be made on the armrests. They are best suited for interior design in the style of Provence and country.

As for the design of the sofa, it should match the overall style of the room:

  1. For avant-garde interiors, bedspreads of complex shape are suitable. They are made of material with a rich decorative content: drawings, prints, inscriptions, three-dimensional elements.
  2. Products in English style are able to completely close the furniture, accurately conveying all its contours. They require special tailoring precision. Often used in a duet with various kinds of fasteners. They have a laconic look.
  3. For country style, simple covers made from natural fabrics in their natural colors are suitable.
  4. Sofas for loft interiors are sewn in urban style. They are simple and have a minimum of details. These covers are easy to care for. Non-staining fabrics are used.
  5. Hi-tech sofa bedspreads have a laconic design. Usually these are plain plaids of neutral colors.

Clamps of covers, made by hand, are different. Buttons are especially suitable for rooms with decoration natural wood, when using floral ornaments. Velcro is suitable for covers in the nursery. Lightning is easy to use, it is relevant for covers on upholstered furniture in the office and living room. Ties look especially advantageous in classic interiors.

Materials for manufacturing

Any sewing job begins with the choice of fabric. When deciding what to sew a cover on a sofa from, it should be understood that it main function is to protect the upholstery from dust and dirt. For tailoring use:

  1. Velor - the fabric is soft and pleasant to the touch. It happens to be perfectly smooth, embossed, embroidered. Does not cause allergies and does not activate static voltage. Not afraid washing machine.
  2. Flock - the material is gentle and soft. Contains polyester and cotton. It has high wear resistance and discoloration resistance. Not afraid of direct sun rays and animal claws. Differs in water resistance.
  3. Microfiber is a great substitute for suede. This synthetic material comes from Japan. It has high strength. Does not cause allergies, easy to clean.
  4. Cotton is a naturally breathable material. Ideal for children as it is hypoallergenic. Easy to maintain and clean. Does not accumulate static stress. Among the shortcomings: it wrinkles a lot, wears out quickly.
  5. Chenille - has a soft plush texture, but at the same time, durable and wear-resistant. Does not require complex care and is not afraid of the washing machine.
  6. Jacquard - produced using high-tech equipment. Differs in density and resistance to mechanical influences. Beautiful in appearance, ideal for living rooms and expensive interiors in the style of classic, baroque, empire. Not afraid of the washing machine and dry cleaning.

How to sew a sofa cover with your own hands: step by step instructions

Nothing lasts under the sun. This is also true for upholstered furniture, which is daily subjected to “torture” by the claws of pets, which is a canvas for small artists, which hardly endures the “raids” of guests. Even new sofas and armchairs quickly lose their appeal, which depresses the owners immensely. The only salvation in such a situation is a removable cover. This product can be bought or ordered, but the prices scare away. That's why independent production fully justifies itself. But before you sew a sofa cover with your own hands, step-by-step instructions are the first thing you need to carefully study. Strict adherence to it is a guarantee of results.

Choosing the Right Fabric

The “longevity” of a sewn cape on a sofa directly depends on the material, so it is not recommended to choose it in a hurry. The main requirements are strength, density, durability, if there are four-legged “tenants” in the house, the ability to resist claws. Well, if the matter is impregnated with a water-repellent composition, in this case, washing will be completely easy. The ideal fabric does not yet exist, everyone has their own strengths but they are not without their shortcomings.

  1. Velours. This velvety material is not demanding in care, relatively inexpensive (compared to velvet), wear-resistant. Any dirt can be easily removed from it. The downside is the fear of claws, so velor is not recommended if mustachioed-striped ones are in charge of the house.
  2. Jacquard is dense, durable, but quite light. Thanks to the twisted threads, the fabric is resistant to abrasion and deformation. The material has a pleasant texture, spectacular appearance, but there are drawbacks: the love of cats, its natural variety is expensive.
  3. Microfiber (microfiber) is a universal fabric, as it does not shed, does not wear out, dries instantly after cleaning with water. It is waterproof, hypoallergenic, pleasant to the touch. There are Teflon-coated species that are completely invulnerable.
  4. Flock is a durable and pleasant material that retains its shape even after prolonged use. All the advantages of microfiber have a Teflon type of flock, which is very easy to wash and dries incredibly quickly. The claws of animals are not a hindrance to her.
  5. Cotton is attractive for its naturalness, but at the same time it is a disadvantage. Such a cover will not last long, the fabric shrinks after washing, willingly burns out. However, cotton remains a desirable material for children's rooms.
  6. Chenille is a beautiful velvety fabric, light, soft, but dense. But there are many disadvantages - a contraindication for "cat houses", fear of moisture, aggressive agents, direct sunlight.
  7. Eco-leather - perfect solution if there are no lovers of scratching and biting upholstered furniture in the house. These slipcovers look great in living rooms. Children are not afraid of eco-leather either, since any “arts” are very easily rubbed off from it. However, this is not true for all species.

Textiles for the “cover debut” should not be expensive, since mistakes are common for a beginner craftswoman. Uniformity is also welcome, because in this case, on the way to the goal, they do not expect torment with fitting the pattern. The best option for an inexperienced "sheather" is training on an inexpensive fabric, even better - on old sheets. In this case, mistakes will not cost too much. The first cover that didn’t turn out “lumpy” will give the craftswoman a pattern-pattern for the next, already expensive, product.

Cover fabric and interior

When choosing a fabric, one should not forget about harmony. If the walls of the room are decorated with colorful wallpaper, then the best option would be a plain material - matte or glossy. Monochrome surfaces, on the contrary, allow even bright fabrics, but there is one requirement - the pattern on them must be small.

Making a cape

The most straightforward option to achieve what you want is to make a solid "spread" for the sofa. Details are cut out, then connected into a single whole. For the operation "cover on the sofa" you need to prepare:

  • textile;
  • centimeter;
  • ruler;
  • crayon;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • tracing paper, graph paper, newspapers or unnecessary wallpaper;
  • pins or needles;
  • threads: ordinary for basting, lavsan threads for a sewing machine.

Material calculation, pattern

Task number 1 - determining the amount of tissue. Before poisoning her to the store, you need to carry out this operation. If the sofa standard sizes, then the cover will require approximately 8 m of fabric. For a more accurate calculation, measure the length and width of the furniture, multiply each figure by 2 and add up.

Further calculation implies a standard fabric width of 1.5 meters. If the sofa has a length of 210 cm, a width of -180 cm, then the material will need 7.8 m. However, this is only an approximate guideline that requires final adjustment, so you need to make a full-fledged pattern before going to the store.

For her, the dimensions are recorded on paper and the shapes of all sections and the smallest details are drawn on a small scale. Then they are transferred to paper (or newspapers, wallpapers glued together) in full size. Leave allowances for seams, hem, 7 cm - the minimum required for covers. After receiving large parts, they are applied to the sofa and all dimensions are checked.

Fabric consumption will increase significantly if the choice fell on a material with a pattern that requires alignment at the seams. In any case, it is recommended to add another one and a half meters to the figure obtained. In this case, it is easier not to get into a mess, and the remaining material is useful for replacing worn-out areas of the cover, adding frills, ruffles, pillowcases to decorative pillows. If the fabric is still not enough, then it is “stealed” from the back of the back, for which you can use a different fabric.

The process of cutting fabric, sewing

When all the elements of the pattern fit perfectly, proceed to cutting the pre-prepared fabric. Woolen and cotton material is washed in warm water in advance so that it shrinks, otherwise the cover may simply not fit on the sofa after washing. Ironing through wet gauze is required for any fabric.

It is laid face down on a flat hard surface. Given the direction of the shared thread, the patterns are laid out on the fabric, fixed with needles or pins. They are circled with chalk along the contour, at a distance of 7 cm from the first line, a second one is drawn. The material is cut out on it.

The resulting parts are folded on the wrong side, a basting is made, then fitting on furniture follows. In the absence of defects, the allowances are reduced to 3 cm, the seams are grinded, the edges are folded, swept away, and after a new fitting they are sewn up.

Corner sofa covers

For sewing capes on corner furniture, they act in a similar way, in which the most important thing is a correctly made pattern. There is only one difference: first, two parts are sewn separately, then they are connected together. Each seam is treated with non-woven tape from the inside, this additional work will help the complex-shaped sofa cover to hold it. The fabric is fixed at the corner joints, otherwise the product will look like a casually thrown cape.

This is the easiest option that allows you to get a cover very quickly. For him, they take a rather large piece of elastic fabric, with which the sofa is completely covered. The hanging parts are cut from below or the furniture is turned over and the excess is pulled together at the bottom. Excess fabric on the armrests is eliminated with draperies. To avoid displacement of the cover, wooden slats or pieces of metal-plastic pipe are deepened between the seat and other parts.

A few "goodies"

Some tips will help minimize the risk of annoying interference and mistakes, which can sometimes negate all your efforts.

  1. When transferring patterns to fabric, in no case should you save on allowances. Excess material is easy to remove, but its lack will be a disaster.
  2. When working with thick fabric, you can not use a small stitch width. The optimal step is 1.5-2 mm and two seams. Otherwise, the fabric is easily damaged.
  3. A loose cover is the lesser evil, as the excess is quite simply less noticeable if it is pulled down with elastic bands stitched into the seams.
  4. If the cover requires the protection of a leather sofa, then even for a cape made of durable fabric, an additional foam pad is needed to prevent slipping of the material and claws.
  5. Too wide "hem" of the cover is a defect eliminated by a drawstring, into which a simple linen gum is threaded.
  6. Those who masterfully own knitting needles can knit individual parts, and then only carefully sew them together.
  7. A tight product is worse than a free one, since constant tension does not contribute to durability.

How to sew a cover on a sofa with your own hands, the step-by-step instructions tell in the smallest detail, however, the main qualities that a craftswoman needs are accuracy, attentiveness, perseverance and patience. How others sew “clothes” for furniture can be seen in this video:

Those who already use such sofa covers in everyday life say that they significantly save time, effort and money. A wide variety of materials are used to create them.

materials

For the manufacture of sofa covers, absolutely any materials that exist today can be used. However, experienced seamstresses say that too dense upholstery fabrics that are used directly to create sofas should be avoided, as they are difficult to use and at home it will be difficult to create a beautiful and practical cover from them. It is also not recommended to use too light fabric, such as chiffon or satin. Of course, covers made from these materials look luxurious, but they are not very practical in care, and they wear out quite quickly.

best options fabrics for creating such a cover are the following:

  • Flock or artificial velvet substitute. It is very soft, pleasant to the touch. The great advantages of this material are its characteristics: it is easy to clean, does not deform, does not change the color intensity of paints even when exposed to the sun for a long time. It is also important that this fabric has good water-repellent functions due to its high density. Also, it is in the flock that linen mites are least likely to start. The material is very light and easy to use, but sometimes it can cause an allergic reaction.
  • Cotton or wool velour. This fabric is not capable of causing allergies, is not a source of static current accumulation, has a long service life and is very easy to clean, does not deform after washing. The disadvantages of this material are a decent cost, as well as relatively high fragility, for example, cat claws can quickly render such a cover unusable.
  • Microfiber or artificial suede substitute. It is advisable to give preference to a fabric that has previously been impregnated with a special Teflon mixture. It will not only be soft and pleasant to the touch and wear-resistant, but will also repel water, grease and dirt from its surface. To the touch, this fabric is very soft and pleasant. It does not fade in the sun and does not deform, does not cause allergic manifestations.
  • Teflon flock- a universal fabric for a sofa cover if there are animals or small children in the house. It has the same qualities as a regular flock, but in addition to them, it also repels any kind of dirt from its surface and does not absorb water at all. It is almost impossible to stain such a cover.

  • Jacquard- This is a fabric with increased strength indicators. She doesn't give in various types deformation and does not change its size during operation. Soft and pleasant to the touch, it has an expensive and presentable appearance. Pretty easy to use and maintain.
  • Leather. You can rarely see a leather cover on a sofa. Indeed, such material is not often used, due to its high cost and certain inconveniences during operation. If, nevertheless, it is decided to sew just such a cape on furniture, then it is better to use artificial leather.
  • Flannel stretch. Usually a fabric with a compression effect is used. These covers are very easy to wash and dry. They are easily stretched and completely repeat all the contours of the furniture. It is the least expensive compared to other materials.
  • Cotton is a natural material for a sofa cover. It has many colors and textures, does not cause allergies. Only hard-to-reach stains are difficult to remove from it, and even during the washing process, the fabric may sit down too much.

It is still better to give preference to denser fabrics, since their service life is much longer. In addition to the fabric itself, to create a cover, you will also need threads, needles, patterns, and preferably a sewing machine. Although you can do without it.

Dimensions

In order for the cover to look beautiful and last for a long time, you need to choose the right size. Sofa covers can be dimensionless, double, triple and corner. In order to determine which size you need, you just need to make simple measurements. A dimensionless cover can be sewn from any material. His distinguishing feature lies in the fact that the lower and lateral parts of the fabric itself are located on a special elastic band like an accordion, so you can pull the cover on a sofa of any size and shape. Such a cape is called "Eurocover", its distinctive feature is the use of very dense material and heavy-duty rubber bands. In order to find out the dimensions of other types of covers, it is necessary to measure the height of the sofa itself and the length of its back. So, a double sofa has a backrest from 120 cm to 150 cm long, and their height does not exceed 100 cm.

A three-seater sofa usually has a height of up to one meter, but it can be 10 cm more or less than indicated, while the back length is in the range from 150 to 210 cm. With covers for a corner sofa, everything is a little different. On sale there are standard covers designed for sofas up to one meter high and back length from 300 cm to 450 cm. There are a wide variety of cases available for sale. But only a do-it-yourself cover for your favorite sofa can emphasize the individuality of the room and become a real decoration of the interior.

How to create?

In fact, making a cover for your favorite sofa with your own hands is not so difficult. All you need is to stock up on tools, make a choice of fabric, buy it in the required quantity and follow our small instructions. The easiest way to make a cover for a sofa without armrests, so if your cover is the first one sewn in your life with your own hands, it is better to start with it. No more difficult to manufacture will be stretchable covers that can be sewn both on sofas with armrests and without them. The most time-consuming to manufacture is a cover for a sofa book.

But regardless of the type of sofa and the size of the cover created for it, you must first determine the amount of fabric that will be needed for work. In order to find out its exact amount, you need to measure the length and width of your sofa, multiply the resulting numbers by two, and then add them together. The total amount is the number of meters of fabric needed.

  • Pattern is the very first step. To create it, you need to take measurements from the sofa and put them on thick paper, fully respecting all the curves of the furniture. The process is quite lengthy, so you can make it easier. Take an old cover, rip it open and trace around the contour on paper, from which in the future you can cut out the pattern itself. It is best to make a pattern without a skirt, if necessary, this detail can be done later. Now the resulting pattern is applied to the material from the inside out and circled with an overlap of 1 cm along the edges.

  • Required tools. They are: paper or cardboard for patterns, measuring tape, chalk, the fabric itself, thread, needles, wooden slats, scissors and sewing machine. In some cases, you can do without a machine, for example, if the simplest covers are sewn, taking the form of a sofa on an elastic band for furniture without armrests. You may also need safety pins and regular pins, it is better to prepare them in advance. To create a pattern, you will need a large free space, it is better if it is a table with a large table top.

Step-by-step instruction

Here we will consider several options for tailoring covers for sofas, depending on their design and size. P sewing a cover for a sofa with an ottoman without armrests or a regular one.

  • Make a pattern according to the size of your sofa.
  • Transfer the resulting pattern to the fabric. Here it is very important not to forget about the overlap. Ideally, it should be equal to 1 cm, but if the cover is sewn for the first time, then you can leave more free space.
  • Now you need to connect all parts of the fabric with each other with a regular seam. This will not only connect the parts of the pattern into one whole, but will also help to further facilitate the work with the sewing machine.
  • Now all the seams are sewn in turn.

  • If the cover is on an elastic band, it is necessary to cut off the required amount of it and attach it to the bottom of the cover before it is stitched around the edges. It is worth remembering that the elastic will stretch, so its length should be slightly more than half the length of the bottom of the fabric. It is best to measure the stretched length of the elastic band the length of the bottom of the sofa, and then the top.
  • The elastic is applied to the fabric and circled in width. With the help of chalk, a line is drawn on the fabric, which determines the position of the gum inside the future cover.
  • Stitches are made with a needle and thread, which form the location of the gum in the fabric, that is, a kind of tunnel for it.
  • The elastic is inserted into the case and all the stitched seams carefully stitched on the machine.
  • You can determine the location of the gum in advance when building a pattern and during the stitching of the parts of the future cover, perform the last two procedures.

If you decide to choose the option of creating such a cape for a model with an armrest, then the sequence of actions should be as follows:

  • Calculation of the required amount of material. The length and width of the furniture are alternately multiplied by two, and then the resulting numbers are added up.
  • With the help of thin wooden slats, the fabric is attached to the sofa. This is best done at the joints of the backs and seats, as well as the armrests and backs.
  • The fabric is pressed against the edges of the armrests and at the corners of the furniture itself with special clips.. You can use a regular construction stapler.
  • Reiki and clips are decorated with fabric. Decor elements in this case are selected individually depending on the wishes.
  • The sofa cover is ready.

The advantages of such a cover are the simplicity and speed of its manufacture, but the disadvantage is that it will not be possible to regularly remove, clean and wash it. The cover for the sofa-book is sewn as follows:

  • Remove patterns.
  • Transfer the patterns to the fabric and cut them out.
  • If necessary, mark the location of the future gum. It is preferable that the cover for such a sofa is elastic.
  • Now the fabric pieces are sewn together. The nuance here is that the cover will not consist of one whole canvas, but of several. Therefore, the cover for the back, seat and armrests is sewn separately.
  • All seams are additionally sewn on a typewriter.

The most time-consuming to manufacture is considered to be the cover for the corner sofa. We have prepared for you the simplest step by step instructions his creation.

  • Using safety pins, you need to attach the fabric to the sofa.
  • All rectangles, namely sidewalls, backrest, seat and armrests stand out with pins.
  • With the help of threads, it is necessary to sweep all the parts, completely repeating the curves of the furniture. You can use regular chalk instead of thread. You need to start from the top of the sofa.
  • Unnecessary parts of the fabric are cut off. It is important not to forget to leave a lap.
  • Now all the cut parts are sewn in pairs. Please note that such a case also consists of two parts: upper and lower. Therefore, parts of the backrest and separately the seat of the corner sofa are sewn separately.
  • Then the covers are turned inside out and tried on to the sofa. If necessary, it is necessary to mark on the fabric where it is necessary to narrow or, conversely, expand the seam.
  • After the changes are implemented, and the cover is completely sewn on a typewriter.

Of course, in each case, the process of making a sofa cover will be different. But his sewing skills come with practice. In order not to be disappointed in the result, you need to heed the advice of more experienced seamstresses:

  • If the cover is sewn for the first time, it is better not to use very expensive material.
  • It is necessary to purchase fabric with a small margin, one or two meters will be enough for this. The surplus material can later be spent on decorating the finished cover, masking its small flaws, or reupholstering chairs and armchairs.
  • Always check the accuracy of your measurements. The proverb “Measure seven times and cut once” is very relevant in this case.
  • Don't be in a hurry. It is better, after sweeping the details, to try on the future cover. If any inaccuracies are found at this stage of sewing, they can be corrected.
  • Always leave an overlap of at least 1 cm of fabric. When creating the first cover, the overlap of the fabric can be up to 8 cm long. The excess will then be easy to cut off.
  • If a sofa cover is sewn in the house where there are many children, it is better to use waterproof material. This will extend the life of your product.
  • Sewing such a cape takes time and perseverance.. Therefore, try not to be distracted by extraneous matters.

At first glance, it may seem that sewing such covers is a difficult and tedious task. Actually quite the opposite. A sofa with removable covers can change its appearance as often as you want. At the same time, with each sewn cover, your skill will grow, and the time spent and the amount of work, respectively, will decrease.
