What does it take to be a good psychologist? What does it take to be a psychologist? Should a psychologist always work with people?

Today we will talk about how to become a psychologist. And not the one who will receive consultations, share his advice on how to change himself, etc., but the one who can analyze people's behavior. A psychologist is, first of all, a person who can understand the true essence of a person. And in this publication we will tell you how to become such a person. Note that the article will be interesting not only for specialists or students who are only studying to become a psychologist, but also for ordinary people.

Unfortunately, scientists have not yet invented a device that reads other people's thoughts, and it is not so necessary if you have good powers of observation and some knowledge in the field of psychology.

ATTENTION! It is important to know that 70% of people express themselves not with speech, but with gestures, movements and facial expressions. If you can read the silent language of the interlocutor, then at the right time you can direct the dialogue in a direction that is beneficial to you, win the person over to yourself, and most importantly, get consent in response to your proposal not only of a business but also a personal nature (for example, if you want to fall in love with into someone else).

Criteria to which a true psychologist pays attention

1) The mirror of the soul is eyes, so says the popular saying and it really makes sense!
It turns out that our pupils change diameter not only under the influence of light and darkness. When expressing interest in an opponent, they tend to expand regardless of the lighting. Imagine a situation where a person is trying to make acquaintance with you. At the same time, he intuitively looks for an approach and tries to find topics for conversation that interest you. If he succeeds, you have certain emotions and the pupils dilate. The conversation starts to grab your attention.

If you look straight into the eyes, this does not mean, as some people think, that you can pull the whole truth out of a person and find out all his secret thoughts. “Direct look” is a faster manifestation of sincere interest and sympathy. It all depends on the amount of time for such a close look. The longer it is, the higher the interest. Although the reaction in this case is ambiguous. If the interlocutor has a bad conscience, his eyes begin to run. However, this can also indicate shyness and isolation, or some confusion, and what exactly becomes clearer in the process of communication.

2) Facial expressions and gestures a person will express what is not said in words. Please note: when we do not look at the face of the opponent, then most of the information is given by the movements of the hands and the change in body position. If the interlocutor tilts his head during a conversation, his palms are open, hand movements are fast, but with a small amplitude, then your dialogue is going in a positive way. If he looks at nearby objects, or lowers his head, crosses his arms on his chest, shifts from foot to foot - in this case, the subject of the conversation is not of interest to the person, and he has only one seductive thought in his head - to retire away. Moreover, if he put his foot forward and put his hands on his belt, even despite the caressing intonations in his voice, then keep in mind that at this moment you need to quickly turn off the dialogue in order to avoid further unpredictable actions of the interlocutor, since he is quite aggressive.

Having nothing in their arsenal of expressing emotions except “Meow” or “Woof”, jumps, poses, sniffs, rumblings and wagging their tails, they, nevertheless, communicate well with us and get along, explaining their mood with all the manipulations available to them. (By the way, this is someone you should learn non-verbal expression of emotions from).

3) Personal space. Any person has his own personal space, which is not allowed to be violated by anyone except for the closest people and loved ones. If an adored child with pigtails sits next to him, says: “Mom, dad, I want this and that ...”, we, with the joy of an antelope, strive to quickly fulfill his desire. But when an unfamiliar subject seeks to get closer in order to feel all our delights and the joy of unity, the first and insatiable desire becomes something to hit the annoying stranger on the forehead and quickly leave, forgetting the troubles of the moment.

4) Do you want to become a psychologist?! Then learn to listen. Pay attention to how many people are talking without listening to anyone and not allowing even a word to be inserted into their tiresome monologue. And even if this long tirade is interesting in essence, disrespect for your opinion becomes a key point of rejection of such an unfruitful conversation. Remember that a silent but attentive interlocutor is much more attractive than one who talks a lot, but completely ignores the opinion of others. The ideal combination is obtained when one speaks, the other listens and approves or disapproves with short remarks, tactful remarks, guiding questions. An explosive mixture occurs when two people speak, interrupting each other, in the end: they do not hear each other. Also, the conversation turns out to be meaningless when the dialogue is based on silent glances and searches for the right words.

“Do to people the way you want them to do to you” - this eternal truth is always relevant.

Develop, expand your horizons, learn to listen, observe and respect the opinions of people. Then, undoubtedly, you will become an excellent interlocutor and learn to read a person’s thoughts between words, that is, you will become the best psychologist even at home.

If it seems to you that all this is not interesting or not correct, then it is better for you to enter the appropriate faculty at any pedagogical university. Although believe before that, in the end, you will still come to these common truths, which are useful both for highly qualified specialists and for “ordinary” psychologists who just want to understand people better and create the right atmosphere around themselves that can improve their lives .

There is an opinion that in order to become a good psychologist you need to study all your life, spend time on self-education and, of course, have your own psychologist-consultant.

Tell us a little more about how to become a psychologist? What is the best way to start learning? Where to get practice?

Here you need to determine specifically who you want to become. Officially, a psychologist does not have the right to engage in psychotherapy without special retraining. A psychologist is a person with a psychological education. Universities produce such specialists. Among psychologists there are social, general, medical, educational psychologists. General psychologists are mainly involved in science, teaching and developing the theory of psychology. Psychologists work in schools.

A psychotherapist needs special training. Take various trainings. It takes quite a bit of time. This includes theory, practice and supervision.

How to become a psychologist?

Hello!

Psychologists are not born, they are made. To become a good demanded psychologist, you really need to constantly study, attend seminars, trainings that will help you master the profession properly. professional level. It is always better to start with a university education, which will give you a deep knowledge of classical and modern psychology, as well as an arsenal of its methods and methods. practical work in different directions: psychodiagnostics, psychological counseling, psychotherapy, psychocorrection, etc. Over the years of training in psychological
specialty in the university there is a personal transformation that predetermines his future success as a specialist. After
it is desirable and even obligatory to seek additional education in psychological and psychotherapeutic counseling. A program that will allow you to master the necessary skills, abilities and experience in counseling. During the learning phase, get to know various types supervisory practice, methods and skills of effective
professional mutual assistance, as well as receive personal therapeutic work. And most importantly, practice counseling!

Indeed, I would recommend getting a higher psychological education in leading universities. The official program in different educational institutions is most likely the same, but a lot depends on the personality, level of training and attitude of the teachers themselves towards their profession. As practice shows (author's research in 2003 in one of the national universities of the IV level of accreditation), among students of the specialty Psychology by the 3rd year only 30% plan to work in the profession, and by the 5th year only 20% wish to remain in this specialty. I am deeply convinced that motivation largely depends on the style of presenting information and personal example, the charisma of teachers, as well as the awareness and personal interest of students.

To improve their skills, psychologists are now given a lot of opportunities in various specialized courses. And, in my opinion, it's great. As they gain practical work experience, each specialist may feel the need for certain additional knowledge and skills, learn in the direction of interest and thus form their own individual style of work.

And of course, practice supervision and personal psychotherapy play an important role in the development of a professional psychologist.

I would also like to note the benefits of joining professional communities - associations of psychologists. This allows you to learn and consolidate the ethical standards of work, share experience with colleagues and acquire useful contacts for professional cooperation.

There is an opinion, and I absolutely agree with it, that people come to psychology who want to help, first of all, themselves. But this, perhaps, is not an end in itself, but rather an internal motivation, which is often not even realized. The uniqueness of this profession is that training various methods counseling, psychotherapy and psychocorrection occurs exclusively through oneself. A specialist, being a client, on the one hand receives assistance in resolving some personal issue or problem, and on the other hand, receives knowledge and experience in carrying out such work. And when the result is obvious and effective for oneself, such study is not a burden, but a joy. Psychology is developing rapidly and an inquisitive person wants to learn something new and thereby feel confident, as in any other profession. There are many branches and specializations in psychology. I think that it is very difficult to choose a direction in advance. Getting a higher psychological education, a person will have an idea about most specializations. And by trying himself in practice, in the process of learning, it is already easier for him to make a choice. Here much depends on individual characteristics and, of course, on personal interest.

When my client leaves a consultation, he turns around at the last moment and sincerely says: “I also want to become a psychologist!” I have a big smile on my face.

Of course, from the outside, the profession looks very attractive. Something like this: “I sat for another hour in a soft comfortable chair, with a cup of tea in my hands, talked with a client, got paid and that’s it.” Easy money, without labor and effort, they come into their own hands. Excellent profession! :)

The reality of our profession is this: it is not enough to be a good psychologist, learn different techniques, master communication skills, understand the client and see the essence of his problem. This is only what is noticeable to the observer during the consultation. And what the psychologist does the rest of the time between consultations, many do not see and do not understand. Therefore, before becoming a psychologist, it would be wise to think about the other side of the coin and get to know it better.

What is the best way to start learning?

Education in psychology should begin with the choice of a university. Understand for yourself what exactly in psychology you like best? Psychology is rich in directions and practices. Psychology, the science that covers everything age periods person. To begin with, you need to get a basic higher psychological education. And already in the University you will understand in which direction your path lies. Whether you want to work in a school, or in a clinic. Do you want to conduct research and engage in theory, scientific research. Or you have a need to help people who find themselves in a difficult life situation and you need to practice, that is, provide practical assistance in resolving their problems. At the university, you will be offered to choose a specialization and take an additional course to study one of the practical methods of psychology. That is, you can help people with the help different methods. Here are some of them: psychoanalysis, psychodrama, gestalt, art therapy, NLP. Look online for information on these methods. Perhaps you are already interested in one of them.

Where to get practice?

In any case, as a psychologist with a higher education, you should not be allowed to see a client until you have been trained in one of the methods and have not simultaneously worked through your topics that cause difficult and negative feelings and thoughts in you. Alas, this is how the processes of the psyche work, they protect a person from pain and displace painful experiences deep inside. If you (as a psychologist-consultant) start listening to the story of a client with a problem that is relevant to you, then you will not be able to help this person. Your feelings will carry you into your experiences. Therefore, it is so important to undergo personal therapy, to work through all the traumatic situations of your past. Everyone has enough of them and you cannot be an exception.

How often should a psychologist visit their own therapist?

I think you need to visit a psychologist as needed. As soon as questions arise that are difficult to find answers on your own, then immediately turn to colleagues for help.

Hello!

I think the first thing to understand is why do you choose this particular profession? Why does she attract you?

Practice and my personal experience shows that the majority of students who entered the university in this specialty come to solve their own personal difficulties. And as a rule, they leave the institute in the middle of the course with the same load of personal problems, disappointed, with a feeling of regret about the time and money spent on education. For the same reason, the majority of students who have reached the final of their studies never work in their profession. Here I would like to note that for the resolution of personal problems it is still worth contacting a specialist, because. studying at a university is unlikely to help to understand the spiritual vicissitudes.

If, nevertheless, you are firmly self-determined with the profession, you should be puzzled by the choice of the university. In the second or third year of study, there is an acquaintance with various areas in psychology, incl. and practical. At this stage, you will have the opportunity to feel your way in the profession (scientific, practice-oriented: psychoanalytic, behavioral, etc.). Having received a university diploma in our country, you will receive mostly theoretical knowledge, this is the base. Despite this, you will have the right to work in schools, MDOU, social institutions, and engage in teaching activities.

To work in client practice, you will need to gain practical skills. To do this, you should ask what practice-oriented areas are represented in your region. It can be, for example, short-term courses or a series (block) of classes dedicated to the development of any instrument.

As for the psychotherapist: this is a psychologist, (i.e. already with a high education) who received additional special long-term training, which includes not only the development of practical methods and tools in the chosen direction, but also the mandatory passage of personal and group therapy.

You need to study as a psychologist all your life, spend time on self-education and, of course, have your own psychologist-consultant.- The profession "Psychologist" has many specializations, for example, a teacher, a recruiting psychologist, a psychologist-trainer, etc. I can only speak about a practicing psychologist, i.e. the one who receives clients in the office and advises on personal or family issues. I would not call "a good psychologist", but a "professional psychologist". Yes, in order to be a professional practicing psychologist, you will have to do advanced training all your life, spend some time and money on it, be in a professional community, attend conferences, etc., and be sure to undergo your own therapy with another psychologist. For example, I still attend at least 3 training seminars per year in my field and meet weekly with colleagues for 2 hours in a professional community, where we discuss issues of interest to us in psychotherapy, analyze dreams, or conduct an intervisor group (a support group for problems that arise). in practice).

Without higher education in the specialty "Psychology" to carry out professional activity in our country it is forbidden, therefore, at least, it is necessary to get a higher psychological education. If there is already one higher education, then the second one will take approximately 2-2.5 years in absentia (depending on the first education and university). In addition to the fact that you will legally have the right to work, in my opinion, at a university, even in absentia, you will receive a systematic understanding of psychological science, which is extremely important for a specialist. No courses, even long-term ones, will give you such knowledge. And of course, it must be borne in mind that no one will provide knowledge and skills in a chewed form during distance learning. And in parallel, it is worth attending various trainings, seminars, conferences and meetings in various areas of psychology and psychotherapy in order to choose for yourself the direction in which you will work.

Where to get practice? - As for practice, this is the most difficult issue, I personally worked in a social service for 2.5 years, where I gained practical experience and the so-called "client base". I do not know a single practicing psychologist (perhaps there is) who, after graduating from the university, would immediately begin to work independently in the office and immediately start earning. As a rule, it is worth working as a volunteer, or in a clinic, or somewhere in a social project. And only after the flow of customers is stable, go "free swimming".

How often should a psychologist visit their own therapist?- In many professional communities, the passage of personal therapy is a prerequisite. There are at least two reasons for this. 1. - You cannot work with a client without having been in a client position yourself, that is, without trying it for yourself. 2. - no matter how super-duper a knowledge psychologist would be, everyone has the unconscious, and it is also "hidden" from the psychologist, like other people. And there, our injuries can be forced out and much more that will "glow" when working with a client. The psychologist himself will not notice, if he is not "friends" with his unconscious (which is worked out in his personal therapy), how he no longer works with the client, but is "treated" at his expense - wins back his unconscious impulses or "dances a dance with him", which does not solve the client's problems, and both have already "drowned" in something. That is, if the psychologist had a similar psychotrauma as the client had, and it was not worked out by the psychologist, then the "coupling" at the unconscious level is guaranteed.

How many hours you need to attend, in my opinion, depends on the psychologist himself and on which direction he has chosen. For example, I am an analytical psychologist and want to join an international association as a full member. To do this, I have to undergo my psychoanalysis for at least 250 hours and supervision for at least 150 hours with certified analysts, which I am doing now. This is a long and costly process, but I feel the results, both personally and professionally.

I think that in any profession there must be a vocation and work invested. First you need to acquire elementary knowledge: education at a university, reading basic theories. The next stage is the acquisition of practice in working with people: a volunteer in an organization, a manager, a teacher ..... Then the process goes very individually. Some specialists need to attend many seminars, undergo supervision every month and undergo their own therapy. For others, a few visits a year are sufficient. And the most important thing is the life of the psychologist himself, the ability to cope with difficulties.

There is an opinion that to become a good psychologist you need to study all your life ...

I support this opinion, I will say even more to become good specialist in any field need to develop and learn throughout life.

Tell us a little more about how to become a psychologist? What is the best way to start learning?

Training should start with his the desire to become a good psychologist and enjoy working with people, and not because it is fashionable or because the parents decided so .

How often should a psychologist visit their own therapist?

A psychologist, like any other person, decides for himself how often, another question is that it is desirable for a psychologist to work out his emerging and past problems so as not to transfer it to clients. A good help in this is training at trainings, where in order to learn the techniques, you need to work them out on yourself . And, of course, the help of psychologists at personal meetings.

And once again I repeat: To become a psychologist - you need a desire!

It so happened in my life that I became a psychologist after I became a successful doctor. I was not a psychiatrist, but a general practitioner. It was 1994 and I was the first doctor in Odessa who received a second higher education in psychology. I was in charge of the department and at first I wanted to add a psychology resource to my medical resource. But in the end it turned out that I scientific work, pedagogical activity in universities, the practice of a psychologist and psychotherapist. In addition, I have always been interested in counseling families, as I lacked knowledge in general medical activities. Over the past years, he adapted the programs of the Harvard Medical School, created a program for the training of psychologists, studied the psychological aspects of the clinical thinking of a doctor at the Odessa National Medical University, created a psychology department with humanitarian training of psychologists at the Christian Humanitarian and Economic University, led international, regional projects and participated in them as a specialist, I created numerous specializations for psychologists, I head the psychological counseling section of the Odessa branch of the Ukrainian Union of Psychotherapists. Created a department of existential psychology and psychotherapy at the Odessa Institute of Mental Health, where there is an open permanent seminar and a four-year training project on existential counseling and psychotherapy that meets the requirements European Association psychotherapy. And, of course, I am constantly engaged in the practice of psychological counseling, psychotherapy and family counseling. In order to develop as a specialist, practice is necessary constantly. Yes, for many it is difficult to start a practice, this is responsible. But without this, the realization of the profession will not work. And if you consult one person a month, then you will not develop as a professional. If you are just starting your practice, create your own social project or join an already working one and gain experience!

The profession of a psychologist attracts, enchants, beckons! Its content and variety of forms. In the possibilities that open up before the individual. How often should a psychologist visit their own therapist?

If you intend to master the profession of a psychotherapist or a practical psychologist. Such procedures are called personal psychotherapy and then it is personal growth or supervision - a specific procedure for professional development.

To everyone who wants to become a psychologist and intends to do so, I want to say "Good Way". Because this is really the Way, and not quite a profession. The path is very lively, informative, interesting, simple and complex, meager and generous, different. The future psychologist will have to tune in not to reaching the destination, but to the Process of the Path of the Psychologist. First it is training, then therapy, then the beginning of practice and supervision, then own practice, perhaps teaching, writing books, articles, constant communication with people and SEARCH.

Good luck and interesting discoveries!

I think that the work of a psychologist is work, complex, difficult, energy-intensive. You need to think thrice before choosing it. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the boundaries between personal and professional can be violated and bringing a personal element to work can destroy it (and maybe improve it), as well as bringing work into personal life can give interest to life, or can take away all resources.

It's like work and life.

The choice is yours.

To become a good psychologist, you must first learn to understand yourself, to be aware of yourself and your true needs, fears, complexes - to work towards knowing yourself and yourself in the world. To learn to look at the world broadly, to go beyond the patterns, stereotypes and attitudes accepted and imposed by society. Since psychology is primarily the science of the soul. That is, the science of the non-material and the unknown, and, accordingly, the paths to the unknown inscrutable multitude, and this is confirmed by the existence of more than 400 schools of psychotherapy within the main three areas in psychotherapy - psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive-behavioral.

Accordingly, one should begin to study with a higher psychological education. In the process of learning, a person will already see in which direction he is inclined, to the study of which he is especially interested. Then it will be easier to continue to choose a narrower specialization and its further study at the selected professional courses, seminars. Naturally, in order to become a good psychologist yourself, you also need to work out your “dark” places, which will prevent you from continuing successful work with the client, since a therapeutic countertransference will be carried out, which consists precisely in the emotional unconscious reaction of the analyst to the client.

That is, in principle, in the learning process, in any case, there will be work on oneself, and in the future, a person can choose a therapist, to whom he can apply for supervision.

And, of course, the most important quality for a psychologist is empathy, that is, the ability to empathize, understand the feelings of another person. A developed capacity for empathy is the main quality that a psychologist should have.

The profession of a psychologist is gaining more and more popularity. In addition, such work can be well paid, because most wealthy people have a specialist to whom they pour out their hearts. But there is a dilemma: some psychologists have a queue of clients, others do not. How to become a successful psychologist, a sought-after and highly paid specialist in this field? To do this, you need to clarify some points.

Psychologists are not born, they are made! Quite often, people become real aces in the process of practice. But for starters, it is important to gain skills and knowledge, and only then proceed to counseling.

How to Become a Successful Counseling Psychologist: Practical Tips

  1. To get an education. Of course, we can talk a lot about the fact that the university does not provide enough knowledge that can be applied in practice. But the essence of this activity is such that it is impossible to carry it out without a document that would confirm the qualification. Therefore, a diploma is necessary to start a career.
  2. Communicate with practicing psychologists. In modern society, this issue is easily solved. There are many forums, dialogue platforms where colleagues share their experience, best practices, and discuss.
  3. Read literature. But not the dry works of theoretical psychologists - there is definitely little useful in them. But problematic articles, specific social studies, books as part of the exchange of experience are a great way to learn a lot of new things in your chosen profession.
  4. You don't have to be afraid to learn. But not in the sense of books and lectures - it is important to gain new knowledge from life. To do this, you need to open up to the client, not be afraid to consider in detail the situation that worries the person. If the psychologist is too arrogant and talks through his teeth with the client, he will definitely not succeed.
  5. It is important to learn how to give advice to people. It is not necessary to appeal during the process scientific facts It is enough to consider the situation, analyze it from different angles. In addition, being able to listen also requires quality. Of course, it is quite difficult to delve into the problems of the client and live them inside yourself, and then come home and smile as if nothing had happened. There are cases when young psychologists worked with suicidal individuals. As a result, specialists got used to the problems of clients so much that they soon committed suicide. Such behavior speaks of the impossibility of abstracting from everything heard and seen. However, this is the phenomenon of psychology, that a person who deals with the problems of other people must see their causes. But seeing is not enough, you need to understand and realize. If these components are present, then the tragedy will not happen.
  6. You need to love people. The psychologist must have a desire to help the person who turned to him. When it is, the specialist is ready to help people understand themselves. In addition, the master has a whole set of tools, verbal and non-verbal, thanks to which he is able to find mutual language with a client. Indeed, in the course of a conversation, it is important to make it clear to the counterpart that the specialist is on an equal footing with him.

To become a successful psychologist, you need to have a lively, genuine interest in your work. It is important to strive to learn as much as possible. In addition, it is necessary to be able to not only find out the cause and give solutions, you need to keep the conversation going, give the person the opportunity to speak out. The client must feel comfortable at the reception. Only in this case is your success as a psychologist likely!

Education

In order not to get confused, it is necessary to highlight the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist. The last two are doctors. They comprehend the secrets of the profession in medical schools or colleges. Future psychologists take a course of study at the Faculty of Psychology of a humanitarian or specialized university.

Now you have many ways to gain knowledge, thanks to which you will perfectly master the skill of psychology and be able to work in your specialty.

If you look at the list of subjects that future psychologists study at universities, you will notice that they cover the natural sciences. The main emphasis will be actually on all sections of psychology, biology, physiology.

No. 1 - Getting a higher education

After you finish 11 classes of a comprehensive school, you can apply for admission to any suitable university (full-time or distance learning). Even in small towns there is always an educational institution where you can enter the Faculty of Psychology.

Also, most universities offer applicants to attend one-year courses that will help prepare for admission and future studies. You will listen to a number of theoretical subjects, as well as get some practical skills.

No. 2 - Second higher education

For example, you will conduct trainings for other students, solve problems or help established psychologists work with real clients. If you already have one higher education, you can always get an additional one.

At each university there is an opportunity to receive a second education in a number of disciplines, which include psychology. It will be easier to enter there, and the study itself will be easier, since you have already passed the test at the university, and what is happening will not be new to you.

Additional education usually takes 2 years. There is also the possibility of studying in psychological colleges.

#3 - Practice Without Education

This question worries those who do not have the opportunity to enter a university. How do they become psychologists without education?

Now it has become fashionable to give consultations online or via Skype. Such people do not present documents on education, but still engage in psychological practice. Most have gained their knowledge from books on popular psychology, and many simply rely on their own life experience.

However, in our country, despite the fact that psychologists work without a license, they do not hire in government agency without an advising psychological education. It is prohibited by law. Moreover, a psychologist without education can cause deep mental trauma to the client, as he does not have the practice and necessary knowledge that are given at the university.

No. 5 - Certification from experts

If you want to be a good responsible specialist and at the same time do not have the opportunity to receive an education, then you can enroll in courses in psychology.

In a year or two, you will be able to gain basic knowledge and get the necessary practical training. At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate confirming that you have completed the course with honors.

Although in most cases this is not enough to get you a government job, you can start a private practice as a consultant. In the United States, there are now a large number of consultants and trainers who have been certified by other experts.

This method is convenient because you can start consulting and get an education in the course of work within 1-2 years.

What distinguishes a good specialist?

What does it take to become a psychologist, besides education? A good specialist is distinguished by practice and self-education:

    Love is Eternal

I think that a real Psychologist is like a gift from nature. As well as a good surgeon. There is something that comes with practice, with experience, and there is something that is given to the Man from Above. To be a Psychologist means to Serve people, to Live it. I consider it not a profession, but a way of life, a vocation. When you serve people, it fills you, nourishes you. I do not consider it a help to others, but rather a duty to come and help at any time, no matter what ...
