17. Prayer for getting taller
After I turned thirteen, I stopped growing. I used to always look older than my years, but now almost all my girlfriends were taller than me. In a class of thirty students, I was one of the smallest. Of course, we never forgot about the Taliban, but life got on its own track, and we had new concerns and interests. The Pakistani army, which, in addition to its main duties, was constantly engaged in very unusual military activities, such as the production of corn flakes and chemical fertilizers, decided to make television serials. Now the whole nation sat in front of their TV screens in prime time and watched the series “Where Debt Ends”. It was assumed that this series is based on real events that occurred during the operation to liberate the Swat Valley from the Taliban.
During this operation, more than a hundred government soldiers were killed and about nine hundred were injured. Of course, the army wanted to present its actions in a heroic light. Nevertheless, often the actions of the military could not be called anything other than lawless. Sometimes, returning from school, I found at home strangers crying women who came to Mingora to get at least some information about their husbands and sons. Hundreds of men went missing during the military operation. Perhaps they were arrested by the army or military intelligence, but no one could tell if this was really the case. The women, who knew nothing about the fate of their husbands and sons, were in despair. Some families that lost their breadwinners found themselves in a distressed situation. In Pakistan, a woman whose husband goes missing is not considered a widow and cannot remarry.
My mother fed these unfortunates, gave them tea, but they did not come to Mingora for the sake of refreshments. They expected my father to help them find their loved ones. The Pakistani courts at that time were busy solving very different issues. Our country has a so-called Blasphemy Law that protects Holy Quran from insult. During the Islamization campaign led by General Zia-ul-Haq, this law was tightened. Now anyone who "defames the holy name of the Prophet, peace be upon him" was subject to the death penalty or sent to prison for life.
In November 2010, the media reported that a Christian woman named Asia Bibi had been sentenced to death by hanging. She lived in one of the villages of Punjab, was the mother of five children and in order to earn a living, she was engaged in collecting fruits. Once, on a hot day, she brought water to the people who worked with her. But some refused to drink, saying that the water brought by a Christian woman was "unclean" and could defile Muslims. One of the women who refused to drink was Asia's neighbor. They recently got into a fight because Asia's goat wandered into a neighbor's yard and damaged a cattle trough. Now the fight has flared up again. As usual, each side had its own version of the conflict. According to the most popular version, people who worked with Asia Bibi urged her to convert to Islam. He later said that he decided to do so after learning that his boss had been cursed by the Imams of Rawalpindi. Our family was shocked at how many people admired and praised the killer. When he appeared before the court, the judges showered him with rose petals. Meanwhile, the imam of the mosque visited by the slain governor refused to read funeral prayers over him, and the president did not attend his funeral.
Our country has gone crazy. The Pakistani people praised the killers to the skies and believed that their deeds were pleasing to God.
Shortly thereafter, my father received another threatening letter. He spoke at a meeting marking the third anniversary of the bombing that destroyed Haji Baba's high school. As always, my father spoke very passionately.
“Fazlullah is the leader of the devils!” he said. I don't understand why he hasn't been arrested yet!

In those days, America was on everyone's tongue. Before, we blamed our eternal enemy, India, for all our troubles, now the United States has taken its place. Everyone complained about the drone attacks that happened in FATA almost every week. We heard rumors that these raids claimed the lives of many civilians. Hostility intensified when a CIA agent named Raymond Davis shot and killed two motorcyclists in Lahore who approached his car. He claimed that they were going to kidnap him. The Americans said that Davis was an ordinary diplomat and had nothing to do with the CIA, but no one believed this. Even we schoolchildren knew that ordinary diplomats don't drive around in cars without license plates and don't carry Glock pistols with them.
Our media claimed that Davis was a representative of a large army of intelligence officers, whom the United States, not trusting Pakistani intelligence, sent into our country. Most journalists believed that he was collecting information about a military group called Lashkar-Taiba, which was based in Lahore and at one time provided significant assistance to the victims of the earthquake and flood. The widow of one of the motorcyclists shot dead by Davis, desperate to get justice, committed suicide by taking rat poison.
For several weeks, Washington and Islamabad, more precisely the army headquarters in Rawalpindi, sorted out the relationship. Finally, Davis appeared before the court, which issued a decision in the spirit of our traditional jirga. The Americans were ordered to pay $2.3 million in "blood compensation" and Davis was expelled from the country. Pakistan demanded that the US send its agents home. Americans stopped issuing Pakistani visas. On March 17, the day Davis was released, a drone attacked the Tribal Council building in North Waziristan. About forty people died. Apparently, the CIA wanted to show that it was able to operate with the methods adopted in our country.
One Monday, I was once again about to measure whether I had grown up overnight, when loud excited voices reached me. One of my father's friends brought news that was hard to believe. Last night, US Navy SEALs raided Abbottabad, one of the cities where we lived during our exile, discovered the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and killed him. Terrorist number one lived in a villa surrounded by high walls, located a kilometer from the military academy. It was impossible to believe that the army leadership did not know anything about this neighborhood. Newspapers claimed that the academy cadets were training on the lawn behind bin Laden's house. On the six-meter walls that surrounded the mansion, there was barbed wire under tension. Bin Laden lived on the top floor with the youngest of his wives, a Yemeni named Amal. Two other wives and their eleven children lived on the floor below. As one of the US senators said, the only thing missing from the house was a neon sign "Bin Laden Lives Here."
In truth, in Pashtun areas, many people surround their homes with high walls - to protect their own privacy and protect women from prying eyes.
