We will send the material to you by e-mail

It is necessary to use space economically in almost every average apartment. Especially if the children are growing up, you need to somehow organize the play and sleeping areas separately. Then the idea comes of how to make a bunk bed with your own hands. In this publication, the editors of HomeMyHome will consider in detail the manufacturing process of such a design, and also analyze existing species and possible design.

Beds with wide steps are considered comfortable and safe.

Modern manufacturer provides the consumer with both classic models and options with the most unusual design. The same furniture is very easy to make on your own, if you arm yourself with imagination.

Bunk bed with sofa below

Bedroom furniture with several levels can be equipped with a double sofa below. This option is convenient in one-room apartments, when both the child and the parents sleep side by side. It is more difficult to make such a structure, since you will have to build in a variety of mechanisms, perform screwing, and you will need a lot of parts and materials.

How to choose bunk bed size

As a rule, the parameters of a do-it-yourself bunk bed for children are always different. Depending on the design and the number of children in the family, these dimensions may vary. In this case, there are several categories of sizes:

  • standard: width - 110 cm, length - 205 cm, height - 180 cm (small deviations are possible);
  • . A very unusual design. They are adjusted to individual age. For example, models that serve children from 0 to 3 years old have parameters of 60 × 120 cm; but the bed for 5-7 years will have dimensions of 70 × 160 cm;
  • loft bed. There are a lot of parameters that should be taken into account: a closet, a ladder, a place to sleep, built-in shelves. Traditionally, the height of such models is almost 200 cm.

  1. When measuring the length of the future bed, it is necessary to add 20-30 cm to the height.
  2. Do not forget about the length of the pillow, so it would be wiser to add another 10 cm.
  3. To calculate the width, you need to lie on your back, spread your elbows to the sides, and close your palms on your stomach. Count 10 cm from each elbow and fix the size with a tape measure.
  4. The height of a bunk bed is usually determined by the ceiling. For example, the height of the structure itself cannot be more than 165-175 cm. At the same time, the distance between the tiers should be 80-90 cm. The optimal distance to the ceiling is 60-70 cm.

Be sure to take into account the age of the child, as well as his weight category. Due to these factors, it is possible to make the bed as comfortable as possible.

Bunk bed made of metal corners and pipes: manufacturing features

Not so long ago, metal couches and tiered beds were used in dormitories and barracks. Now designers pay special attention to such designs, so why don't we try to design comfortable furniture.

Preparation of materials and tools

To prepare the frame of a two-story bed, care must be taken that not only the material is durable, but all connections meet this requirement. For the product we need:

Do not forget that it is better to select all materials with a margin, however, it is also worth focusing on fixed dimensions.

On a note! If the room is too small and there is a risk that after assembling the bunk bed, it will not enter there. It is better to collect it right in the room, while taking out the material for filing outside, having previously removed the necessary dimensions.

How the frame and racks are made

First of all, you need to deal with the frame, from which you can build on in the future when preparing additional components.

  1. We cut metal parts to size. You can immediately make holes for the screws.
  2. Further, we equip all the details at the junction points with channels, then we fasten them by welding. So we create two frames with internal crossbars.
  3. We prepare pipes of the required height and weld them with the prepared frame. Be sure to take into account the optimal distance from the lower tier to the upper.
  4. We take a tube bent into a semi-oval and attach it to the outer edge of the upper tier. It will play the role of a security side.
  5. It remains only to weld the stairs. It is advisable to make it completely in advance, so that later it can be installed whole on the finished frame.

The process of sanding parts

No matter how hard you try to make the structure perfectly smooth, the seams will definitely have roughness. This needs to be got rid of. For this purpose, you can use a metal brush or sandpaper of medium grit. Then it remains only to thoroughly sweep away all debris, dust and metal particles from the surfaces.

After that, we perform the primer metal frame and coloring. It is better to choose the color that is most suitable for the interior of the future or already finished room.

It remains only to put plastic or rubberized plugs on the ends of all protruding tubes. The lower ones will serve as footboards, and the upper ones will simply create an aesthetic effect and prevent injuries from impacts and contact with metal.

On a note! In order for the bed cover to last as long as possible, it is necessary to choose hammer paint, which adheres well to metal and does not lose color over time.

How is it made wooden bunk bed

Usually at home, beds are made from different tree species: oak, pine, beech. With proper processing, the furniture turns out to be quite beautiful and interesting.

Work materials

It also happens that it is not possible to purchase finished furniture, so most craftsmen try to make similar designs at home. However, remember that you will need a lot of details:

  • grinder with working disks;
  • the right number of boards and bars (taking into account the size and stock);
  • coating material;
  • connecting bolts;
  • hammer, screwdriver;
  • hacksaw.

The principle of work is the phased preparation of all significant details of two-story beds for children.

Preparation of wood material

After making sure that there are plenty of materials to create a sleeping place, we will get to work.

  1. First of all, we will cut the boards according to any suitable drawing. Be sure to rely on the size of the room and the area where the bed will be located.
  2. We sand the places of cuts and the surface itself. Ideally, you need to get a fairly smooth material.
  3. We wipe the dust from the wood, check the dimensions. In our case (3 pieces - 20 cm wide, 3 pieces - 15 cm wide, bars 10 × 5 cm).

How to assemble a bunk bed and prepare it for use

In order to correctly assemble the entire structure, you will have to work a little with the material. Let's consider in detail how the whole process takes place with a description and photos.

IllustrationAction Description
We take purchased slats (you can make them yourself) and measure the parameters of the future base for the mattress. Then we twist all four sides of the frame together.
We measure the height of the bed on long racks and fasten the workpieces with furniture screws.
Two screws should be fixed on each side for security.
We attach to the three sides with the same screws the crossbars of a suitable size. They add stability to the bed.
We fasten the side of the safety. Pay attention to the photo where the connection elements should be. Immediately there are holders for lamellas, two pieces on each side.
Next, we make a ladder. We take two beams and on each of them at the same distance we fasten small bars with inside. Then we use the shortest boards and build steps, fasten them with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver.
We make three or four steps and fasten the ladder with the bed with bolts, as shown in the photo.
The lower crossbars, which serve to strengthen the structure, will be used as supports for the tabletop. Thus, we get a loft bed on the second floor and desk at the bottom.

It remains only to finish the finish, paint with a harmless varnish and let the product dry well. We install slats and you can use bedroom furniture.

On a note! If there is no assistant in the house and you have to cope on your own, in order to hold the boards and calmly connect them to each other, you can use a vise, having previously laid rubber gaskets under the clamps.

Bunk bed for children made of wood with an unusual design

Classic models can be made independently according to your size. However, those options that are subject to decoration are not within the power of everyone. Consider in this section one of the interesting options.

What do you need to work

Usually, natural wood or is used for such structures. You will need connecting elements and a tool for working with wood. All inventory will be needed only if all the blanks are made independently. In most cases, parts can be purchased to order.

Preparation of drawings and cutting boards

Drawing a sketch with dimensions is perhaps one of the most difficult jobs that requires adjustments and multiple additions. To simplify the situation and quickly start making designer furniture, we bring to your attention a video that shows a drawing of an unusual two-level bed for children.

What details are needed for a full bed

As a rule, all multi-level beds have several basic parts that must be assembled into a single unit. We note several important components.

  1. Footboard and headboard. These are almost the same details. They can differ only in the way they are embedded.
  2. Frame details. They need 4 pieces. Two long and two short. The latter form the width of the bed.
  3. Boards for the construction of stairs and boards. These components are made depending on the design and desired dimensions.

After all the elements are prepared, you can begin to assemble the structure.

How to assemble children's bunk bed easily

To do this, the footboard and headboard are connected with a ready-made frame under. Laths or lamellas are laid on top. In other words, the elements that will hold the mattress.

Reiki, which are installed along the edges, must be filed in the corners. This will ensure the strength of the structure and prevent the bed from hanging out. Next is going to the stairs and railings. If necessary, cut out grooves are made into which the ladder and other details are then inserted.

How to decorate children's bunk bed

You can talk a lot about the possibilities of decor. However, not all options are acceptable for use in a toddler room. We offer you a video.

bunk beds popular for many reasons. They help save space small apartments Easy to use, kids love it. You can buy such a bed in a store, but it is better and cheaper to make it yourself.

Types of bunk beds

The type and size of beds depends on the purpose, the age of the children, their preferences and other factors. Beds may vary in width. It does not depend on the age of the child, since usually the baby sleeps below, and his older brother or sister is on the upper tier.

A bunk bed with one place to sleep is used if one child lives in the room, but there is not much space in it. In this case, the baby sleeps upstairs, and below there is a space for games, a wardrobe or a desk with shelves.

If the lower tier is double, two same-sex children can sleep on it. Toddlers are placed on the lower tier, and an older child is placed on the upper tier.

At what age can a child be placed upstairs

A child of 1–1.5 years old can be placed on the lower berth, but it must be protected by a high side so that the baby does not fall in a dream and is not afraid.

In order for the child not to fall during the ascent or descent to the second tier, it is necessary to provide the stairs with railings, and stick anti-slip stickers on the steps. The berth should also be protected by high sides.

Bunk beds come in a variety of designs.

  1. Two-section with two tiers. If you remove the upper berth, the design turns into a regular bed.
  2. Whole bunk. In terms of cost, such structures are practically no different from collapsible ones.
  3. Loft bed with built-in wardrobe, table or shelves. Usually on the top tier there is a sleeping place, and below all the necessary details.
  4. Loft-type bed, which has a free access zone below. To the side is a staircase.
  5. Bed with pull-out bunk. This design has a height of 60 to 120 cm. The lower tier with a berth is extended only if necessary.

Some models of children's bunk beds are made in lengths of 150-170 cm. Sometimes this is not very convenient, as parents often put the kids down and lie down next to them. For greater savings, it is better to make a bed about 180 cm long.

The loft bed cannot be called a full-fledged bunk model, it has only one bed. At the same time, children really like this design, it gives scope to their imagination and extra bed for games.

What to make a bed from: the pros and cons of different materials

Metal is the most durable material for making beds. Finished products have a light and aesthetic appearance, withstand big weight. Cons of metal structures - high price and the need to work with a welding machine.

Solid wood is an expensive and difficult material to process, but beds made from it are beautiful, durable and reliable.

The most common beds are made of edged or planed boards. For manufacturing, it is necessary to purchase well-dried material, otherwise the structure may “lead” and it will deform. With the correct creation of the drawing, such a bed can withstand an adult.

MDF beds are an inexpensive option. The product is durable and beautiful. During processing, the MDF board does not generate dust and does not form chips. This design is best used only in children's rooms, since it can break under heavy loads.

Chipboard contains formaldehyde, so it is not recommended to use it to make a bed without a sealed coating. This material is not suitable for the main structure, as it will not be able to withstand a lot of weight. It is better to make backs, decorative panels or drawers for things and toys from chipboard.

furniture board- reliable and durable material. This is a slab that is glued together from various bars natural wood. It is great for making a bunk bed. In this case, it must be borne in mind that the plate has internal stress, which must be taken into account during operation.

The choice of material depends on the type of bed, how many kilograms it can withstand and how long it will last.

Suitable ladder and railings

It is equally important when making a bunk bed to pay attention to the stairs and sides, because they ensure the safety of the child.

  1. Flat vertical stairs. Usually it is mounted on the Swedish wall and serves as a narrow protective board for the lower tier. The design does not have a railing, so it is not entirely safe for the baby. This option is suitable for children from 5-6 years old.
  2. A flat sloping or curved forward staircase. It can be in front of the front wall or on the side of the bed. This design, equipped with a safe railing, is very convenient for children.
  3. Staircase with steps in the form of drawers. The design is comfortable and roomy, but the minimum length of such a bed is 240 cm, so it can take up almost the entire wall in a small room.

The main advantage of the bumpers is to ensure the safety of the baby. Their optimal height is from 30 to 60 cm. Even if your child has grown, such fences will still serve as protection against falling during sleep.

Bumpers in bunk beds can be high or low, depending on the preferences of the children, their age and other interior features.

Making a bed with your own hands: step by step instructions

There are a huge number of beds of various modifications. Choice of option self-manufacturing depends on the capabilities of the master and the preferences of small owners.

Loft bed: drawings and manufacturing process

A bunk bed can consist not only of sleeping places, but also serve as a play or study area for a child.

For the manufacture you will need tools:

  • electric screwdriver;
  • joiner's glue;
  • dowels;
  • grinder or sandpaper;
  • wood primer, varnish or paint;
  • metal corners.

From materials, make bed elements in advance:

  • vertical racks - 4 pcs. size 50x100x1650 mm;
  • side boards for the supporting frame - 2 pcs. 50x150x950 mm;
  • transverse boards for the ends of the bed - 4 pcs. 50x100x950 mm;
  • fencing elements - 4 pcs. 50x100x1900 mm;
  • tsargi (side bearing frames) - 2 pcs. 50x150x1900 mm;
  • bars that will be attached to the sides inside the bed for mounting slats - 2 pcs. 50x50x1900 mm;
  • bars for steps with cut and rounded edges at 45 ° - 6 pcs. 25x50x200 mm;
  • boards for steps - 6 pcs. 50x100x450 mm;
  • element of the vertical rack, which is located near the stairs - 1 pc. 50x100x1050 mm;
  • side ladder boards (cut at both ends at an angle of 45 °) - 2 pcs. 50x150x1000 mm;
  • boards for facing the landing - 12 pcs. 50x100x550 mm;
  • end boards for the site - 2 pcs. 50x100x500 mm;
  • boards for installation under the platform - 2 pcs. 50x100x950 mm;
  • horizontal boards for supporting the platform - 2 pcs. 50x100x800 mm;
  • slats for laying the mattress - 13 pcs. 120x25x1000 mm.

Assembly steps.

  1. We assemble the left end side of the bed. We connect the transverse boards with the racks with dowels, which we fasten with glue in pre-made holes. For strength, we also fix with self-tapping screws, deepening them a few mm into the tree. To this side we will mount the stairs.
  2. We assemble the right side of the bed in the same way. It will also serve as a protective fence.
  3. We glue bars with separating parts on the tsargi, fix them with self-tapping screws. Then we connect the end elements with drawers and boards for fencing. We assemble all the elements with the help of bolts (you can use self-tapping screws and dowels), which we must fix with carpentry glue. As a result, the sleeping place is 1.9x1.0 m. Then we lay the lamellas on the beam.
  4. We assemble the support frame for the platform. It must be very strong in order to withstand a lot of weight.
  5. We attach the landing frame to the frame, then we mount the entire system to the main frame. To do this, we use iron corners, which we fasten from the inner invisible side of the structure.
  6. We sheathe the stairs with boards. First, we attach them to the glue, then additionally fix them with self-tapping screws. Hats are sunk a few mm into the tree. All recesses can then be sealed with sawdust mixed with glue, or with special wood putty.
  7. We collect the ladder for the bed. We mark all the places where the bars are attached, using the building level, we mark the installation points. Steps should be strictly parallel to the floor. We fasten the bars opposite each other without distortions.
  8. We lay the boards of steps on the screwed bars and fasten them with self-tapping screws. For convenience, you must first screw one board on top of the span, and one on the bottom. So the design will gain greater strength. We fasten the finished staircase to the podium using metal corners. We check the strength of the bed and stairs.
  9. We close up all the recesses and grind the structure. We cover all the elements with a primer on wood, then apply varnish or paint. After they are completely dry, lay the mattress. Below you can make a play area or put a desk.

Retractable (roll-out) structure made of laminated chipboard

In small children's rooms, it is better to install a retractable bunk bed. This is an easy-to-make design that does not require special skills and experience.

To assemble it you will need:

  • a sheet of chipboard (19 mm), from which we will make the main parts of the structure;
  • furniture board (22 mm). From it we will cut out the cover and the lower side of the podium.

Making a frame according to the drawing

In order to independently assemble such a bed, it is necessary to cut the sheets into separate parts, and then assemble the structure using corners and screws with bolts.

We equip the lower tier with wheels so that the bed can move freely if necessary. For the crate we use wooden planks 10–15 cm thick. For a bed 1.8–2 m long, a minimum of 5–7 strips must be used.

Stages of bed assembly.

  1. We make 4 side parts (sides) to create the upper and lower floors of the structure. They will hold the slats.
  2. We assemble the ends of the bed (headboard and footboard) using racks and crossbars. We make supports from a bar and parts that will close the fastener holes of the structural parts and create a groove for laying the drawer side into it.
  3. We collect the head and foot of the structure. At the top of the headboard, we attach 3 pads to the beam, between which we will mount the elements of the protective fence. In the legs we attach one solid overlay.
  4. According to the indicated dimensions, we assemble the details of the bed.
  5. We collect the elements of the fence and the bed on the second tier. The rack shows how the steps are arranged. There are three of them in total. When we attach the bottom step to the footboard post, we need to make sure that the screws do not rest against the frame fastening screws.
  6. We connect the side parts of the structure with drawers. To do this, we install them in the gaps that we left between the linings. Fasten with four self-tapping screws on each side.
  7. We put the structure on the floor and begin to mount the handrail, stairs, steps and crossbar for the fence. We twist all the elements first with each other, and then with the bed posts using self-tapping screws. After we have assembled a one-piece structure, we lay the lamellas between the bars on the sides.
  8. We grind the finished structure, if necessary, so that there are no hooks. We process with special impregnations and cover with varnish or stain. We give the structure to dry completely, put the mattresses.

For safety, it is necessary to fix the bed to the wall so that children do not accidentally knock over the entire structure.

Bunk bed made of metal corners and pipes

Metal bunk beds have long been used in everyday life. Strength and durability are the main criteria for choosing such a design. If earlier they stood only in army barracks, barracks or dormitories, now designers began to pay attention to them.

Such a bed is not just a crude iron structure with two sleeping places. If you add it with forged elements, then it can become a real decoration for a child's room.

A standard bed has dimensions of 1.9x0.9 m. The frame is made in the form of a metal frame with beds made of durable mesh. The width of the bed should be approximately 10 cm larger than the mattress, and the length 8 cm.

Required materials and tools:

  • metal profile or corners 45x50 mm;
  • special mesh for sleeping places right size;
  • channels - 32x65 mm;
  • pipes with a diameter of 25 mm;
  • wrenches for bolts and nuts;
  • grinder with circles for metal;
  • hacksaw;
  • welding machine;
  • electric screwdriver;
  • level and angle.

Assembly steps.

  1. We make a frame for sleeping places from the corners. We cut the metal corners with a grinder or a hacksaw into parts of the desired size.
  2. At the ends of the corners for reliable fastening, we cut out special sections and connect them using channels. We weld all the elements, check the evenness of the corners and the parallelism of the frame slats.
  3. We cut out vertical racks from pipes and weld frames to them. All actions are carried out exactly according to the drawing. The main thing is to weld all the elements correctly and evenly, the strength and reliability of the entire structure depends on this.
  4. We weld the sides of the bed on the second tier to the vertical posts.
  5. From metal pipes we cut off the elements of the crossbeams for sleeping places and weld them at the same distance from each other. The smaller it is, the stronger the whole structure.
  6. In the drawing, the ladder is located at two ends, so we weld the rungs in the right places. You can weld the ladder separately to the desired height, and then install it at the head or foot of the bed.
  7. After we have finished welding, it is necessary to sand the seams. The best thing to do is grinder. Then metal structure We clean it from rust, process it with a special primer and paint it.

Bed of two tiers: from the scheme to the finished product - video

If there is not enough space in the room to install two beds, a bunk or retractable design will come to the rescue. It is not difficult to develop a project and make it according to your own drawing. A hand-made thing will look perfect in the interior, save space and provide convenience to all family members.

The question of buying a bunk bed arises in families with two or more children and a small living space. Such a bed will significantly save the area of the room, thereby leaving more space for children to play. And it is not at all necessary to run to the store to buy a bunk bed. Such a bed can be made by any master with a minimum set of tools.

What types of bunk beds are available?

  • Traditional bunk bed

The design of such a bunk bed is quite simple. It is completely made of solid wood, which is important for a child's room. Such a bed should be stable, as it will serve not only as a sleeping place, but also as a playground for children's games. To increase the stability of the bed, it is recommended to attach it to the wall.

Drawings and step by step manufacturing this type of bunk bed will be discussed below.

The design of such a bed can be improved by adding drawers to it. They can store children's toys or, for example, bed linen.

  • Bunk bed with three beds

This bed has three beds and is quite stable due to the widely spaced legs. The area in the room, it will take exactly as much as a regular double bed or sofa bed.

Bunk bed with three beds.

This bed is an improved version of the bunk bed with three beds.

Such a bed will be like a bunk bed in height, but in terms of functionality it will be like a three-tier one. This bed has four beds and will be more difficult to manufacture than a traditional one, but it's worth it. Such a bed takes up a little more space than a traditional one, but it has a convenient staircase to the second tier and the children will be provided with their own lockers for storing things or toys.

These beds are also called loft beds. This bed is convenient because it has dual functionality. Above is a sleeping place, and below is a spacious workspace with a table and lockers. Thus, there is no need to purchase a separate bed, desk and lockers. This bed saves a lot of space in our apartments. The disadvantage of such a bed is that it has only one bed. As a rule, such beds are made of plywood and chipboard.

This option is a little simpler and this bed can be made from solid wood.

A loft bed can be significantly improved by adding another pull-out bed to it. Thus, you get a full-fledged bunk bed with two beds and plus a workspace area. True, there is a significant drawback here. You can't use the table until you roll out the bottom bunk.

Making a classic bunk bed

This type of bed is the simplest. This bed is suitable for both children and adults. Inside the bed has a size of 2005 x 705mm. This size is necessary to fit a standard mattress with dimensions of 200x70cm.

Below is the simplest bed design, which is made without grooves and various cuts. This bed can be made by almost any craftsman with a minimum set of tools.

The bed boards can be fastened with wood screws. Yellow galvanized or hex head screws can be used. Hex screws are also called "capercaillie". Screws will be needed in two sizes - diameter 6mm, length 110 and 160mm. Do not use black wood screws. They are fragile and do not hold shear loads well.

If hex head screws are to be used, then to hide the hex head, it will be necessary to drill holes in the boards with a spatula bit according to the figure below. Under such a screw, it is imperative to place an enlarged flat washer. This washer has an outer diameter of 18mm and an inner diameter of 6.5mm. Including the washer, the hole should be 20mm.

To make such a hole, you need a feather drill for wood.

A better option would be to fasten the bed boards with dowels, glue and self-tapping screws. In this case appearance the beds will improve, but the manufacture will become a little more complicated and an additional tool will be needed.

To close earlier drilled holes to hide the hex head of the screw, you can use wooden plugs. They must be drilled out of the board using a wood crown of the appropriate diameter and put on glue.

Important. When using screws in fastened boards, you must first drill holes. Moreover, in the first board the diameter is 6-6.5mm, and in the board into which it will be screwed, the hole should be 2.5-3mm. If this is not done, then the boards may burst.

  • Board 45x95mm, length 1800mm - 4pcs
  • Board 45x145mm, length 2005mm - 6pcs
  • Board 45x145mm, length 1410mm - 1pc
  • Board 45x145mm, length 605mm - 8pcs
  • Board 45x95mm, length 1300mm - 1pc
  • Board 45x95mm, length 1570mm - 1pc
  • Board 20x90mm, length 705mm - 24pcs

On all boards, it is desirable to chamfer the edges or round them.

The circles indicate where to drill the holes for the screws.

Please note that the end frames differ by one piece. Everything is clearly visible in the drawing.

Now you need to assemble 4 horizontal bars. They consist of only two parts.

It remains to assemble all the other parts according to the drawing. Before assembly, be sure to drill holes with a diameter of 2.5-3mm in the parts into which you will tighten the screws.

The bunk bed is almost ready.

It remains only to cover it with a stain, which will give the necessary shade of color, and also to add gloss, you can cover it with a colorless glossy varnish.

Below are the drawings for the manufacture of a bunk bed with a table. This bed is also assembled on screws, like a classic bunk bed. The upper tier of such a bed is slightly higher than that of a classic one. This is done in order to increase the height of the working space under the bed and, therefore, reduce the number of bumps that can be filled by hitting your head on the boards of the upper tier.

Is there not enough room for separate cots in the children's room? Assemble a children's wooden bunk bed with your own hands. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, we will show the algorithm for making such a bed with our own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or teenagers can also be made of metal, but not everyone will get a neat welded structure, and the appearance of such beds is not too childish. Therefore, we will consider the manufacture of beds from wood and lumber, as these are inexpensive and easy-to-work materials, warm, beautiful and homely.

Bed frame materials

The list of wood materials from which a bed can be made is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

1. Array. Expensive material and quite difficult to prepare and manufacture if you have no experience with it. Experience is important here. Although solid wood products turn out to be the most beautiful and durable, they still do not use a children's bed for a very long time - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

2. Lumber - edged or planed board, timber - the most common and easy-to-work materials, provided that you are sure of proper drying, otherwise the supporting structure may "lead".

3. MDF - fibreboard. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling dusty, without forming chips. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. It is possible to order individual elements of the bed in furniture shop or a sawing workshop: everything is carefully cut out there, the edges are glued.

4. Chipboard - chipboard. Formaldehyde emission increased without sealed coating, class E1 board excluded. Easy to saw, but does not hold screws well. Suitable for unloaded parts such as drawers mounted under the bottom of the bed. Laminated board (LDSP) can be used to make backs, decorative panels - the film coating does not allow formaldehyde to evaporate, but it is important that the ends of the plates are also covered with a film.

5. Furniture board - a plate glued from individual blocks of natural wood. Beautiful, durable, even allows you to carve, but requires skill in work, as it has internal stresses that need to be taken into account.

When buying accessories, preference should be given to steel hardware. Aluminum is much less durable and rigid.

Methods for connecting wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various connections horizontally, vertically, forming corners. This can be done different ways. We present some of them for reference.

1 - half-tree connection; 2 - connection "in the paw"

1 - complete felling; 2 - cutting is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection on rectangular dowels; 2 - connection on the keys "dovetail"; 3 - connection in the root spike

Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can be of various designs and be decorated in various ways. So, the upper tier can be exactly above the lower one, be offset, leaving room for the locker, or be perpendicular to it. Stairs may consist of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged drawer lids. The bed frame can also be added drawers located under the bottom mattress. To do this, you will need guides - skids. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or sports equipment.

Below are drawings of some beds with basic dimensions.

And now for some design ideas that can inspire the creation of an original bunk bed. Pay attention to how absolutely “junk” materials are used in some models - croaker, branches, trunks, snags.

How to make a bunk bed

One of the most inexpensive materials is pine board and timber. It is from them that we will make a bunk bed.

Material calculation

When making a bed, you need to keep in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, so the distance to the bottom of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of the beds in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you yourself make mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a dense fabric cover, then the dimensions are taken based on personal preferences.

The figure below shows the individual elements of the bed, and the table shows the purpose, dimensions and number of blanks.

1 - vertical racks (legs); 2 - external pads on the racks; 3 - boards of the supporting frame; 4 - upper and lower slats of the headboard; 5 - central plank of the headboard; 6 - side railings; 7 - stair railing; 8 - steps of the stairs

Qty Size, mm Name
4 38x76x1730 Vertical racks
4 38x76x1730 Blanks for external overlays on vertical racks
4 38x140x2030 Bed frame boards
4 32x44x1850 Longitudinal mattress support bars (not shown in the figure)
24 20x76x1000 Mattress support cross rails (not shown), cut in place
8 20x140x914 Top and bottom headboard/footboards
4 20x90x914 Headboard/footboard center slats
1 20x90x1510 stair railing
3 20x64x482 stairs
2 20x90x1800 Fence railing, cut to size at installation

Assembly units

A bed is furniture that consists of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single unit. Identical parts can be cut by fastening them with a vice or clamp, so they will turn out to be absolutely identical. Before assembly, make sure that all wooden details clean, smooth and free of burrs. It is better to work with a special grinder for wood or a grinder.

1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-image elements. The difference lies in the embedding of the railing at the footboard, as shown in the pictures below.

Headboard and footboard

Detailed layout with headboard and footboard dimensions

Installation order: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the stand and the backrest slats are drilled at the same time; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all other parts of the headboard

2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, four prepared boards are required - the longitudinal components of the frame. For the reliability of the structure, the longitudinal bar must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the board thickness. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal support bar of the mattress, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

The design and dimensions of the supporting frame board

3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is just a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a sample for mounting on the frame. The places for fastening the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the screws of the frame.

1 - cutouts 38 mm; 2 - places for fastening the steps; 3 - stairs, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

4. Assembly of the frame

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the boards of the supporting frame with screws. After that, the transverse slats, mattress holders are laid, and the extreme ones are sawn in the corners for a tight installation. They do not need to be fixed. The assembly of the second tier is carried out in the same way.

5. Assembly of stairs and railings

The ladder and railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made from the side of the wall - for the lower and upper beds. Then you need four more bars.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, the mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!

In conclusion, we suggest watching a video on the manufacture of a bunk crib for real princesses.

Bed materials

First of all, in order to start making a bunk bed, you need to purchase a certain set of materials.

  1. 8 bars. Width - 100 mm, thickness - 50 mm, length - 3 m. Pieces of 60 cm will need to be cut from four beams. These eight boards will go to the construction of the frame.
  2. 4 boards 3 m long with different sections. one board should have dimensions in section - 15 by 2 cm, one - 20 by 2 cm and two 10 by 2 cm.
  3. 2 sheets of plywood or 12mm thick. The dimensions of the canvas should be 240 by 120 cm.
  4. Hardware. Screws (75), wood screws, 8 hex head screws, 10 hex bolts with nuts 75 mm and 2 bolts 150 mm.

Tool

In order for a do-it-yourself children's bunk bed to become a reality, you need to acquire the necessary hand-held power tools:

  1. Household electric drill and. There is a tool with removable attachments that combines these two devices, so the choice is yours.
  2. Measuring tool. First of all (water) and roulette.
  3. Cutting power tool. A power saw would be ideal, but a regular wood saw will also work.
  4. Wiring detector. It is needed to protect against electric shock, but you can get by with other improvised means, for example, a magnet.
  1. Additional tool. In addition to the basic tools, you may need polyurethane, wood putty, fine grit, and dowels (if you need fixings in a brick wall).

Beginning bed assembly

Before starting the assembly, you need to make a drawing of a bunk bed. It should look something like this:

Then you need to measure the size of the mattresses on which the children will sleep, and add another two centimeters to them, for more convenient filling of the sheets. Then we take bars with a section of 10 * 5 cm and make two frames, fastening them with screws. They will have dimensions of 300 * 240 cm.

Framework construction

After that, we attach a board with a section of 15 * 2 cm to one of the frames. It is important to ensure that the screws and bolts do not come out. Since the bed is intended for children, the ends that come out can cause injury. We fix another board with a section of 20 * 2 cm to the second frame structure. Then we make the legs of the bed from two bars (10 * 5 cm), and their height will be equal to the upper tier.

Finishing work before installation

For further operations, an assistant is needed. In the legs we make holes for the screws with hex heads, at the level of two tiers of the bed. In addition, you need to drill holes in frames with sides 15 and 20 cm wide.

To hide the heads, we drill holes, and after finishing the work, we cover them with putty. We screw the screws into the holes. The legs to the frames must be fixed very securely. Then we level the wall if it is uneven and attach a frame with legs to it.

Final installation

We check, using the water level, the evenness of the wall and the structure attached to it, and begin to fix it. By the way, the attic bunk bed, which we will talk about below, is installed in a similar way. In order to properly fix the bunk bed, we mark the locations of the holes for the dowels for the screws with hex heads and drill them.

Note!

If the walls are made of, then the hole must pass through the frame, drywall sheet and necessarily through the metal profile, for more reliable fastening.

After securely fixing our bed, you need to install a fence made of boards with a section of 2 * 10 cm.

Children's bunk bed

Staircase to bunk bed

So that the child can safely climb to the second tier, you need to make a ladder. It should be installed according to your tastes and the size of the room. You can make it look like a staircase in a train compartment, then it will not take up any space. In this case, it can even be used as a Swedish wall.

And you can make a more complex structure, the so-called diagonal staircase. It looks prettier, but can also take up a significant amount of space. We complete our work by laying sheets of plywood or chipboard in the place where the mattresses will lie.

Note!

When determining the height of a bunk bed, keep in mind that the child will sometimes want to jump on it, so it should not be installed too close to the ceiling.

What is a loft bed

If you have one child or two children who definitely want to sleep on the upper shelves, then there is a way out of this situation - a children's attic bed with their own hands. It differs from the usual bunk bed in the absence of a lower tier and, accordingly, is characterized by a significant release of space that can be used at your discretion. It is made in the same way as a standard bunk bed, but with less material and effort.

Upper bunk height

Usually the upper tier is placed at a height of 80-180 cm. It all depends on your wishes. If the upper tier is located at the maximum height, then you have more opportunities to use the lower free space. Otherwise, your options are somewhat narrowed, but there are fewer signs for parents to worry that the child will fall from a great height.

In general, if a loft bunk bed excites your imagination, and you definitely decided to install it, then the main thing to do is to decide on the distance between upper tier and ceiling. Firstly, you need to understand that the child is growing and he needs, if not to stand, then at least to sit normally in bed. Secondly, it is not quite comfortable to sleep when you have a ceiling in front of you. Thirdly, the flow of warm air rises, therefore, with a small distance to the ceiling, especially when high temperature ambient air, the child will simply miss it.

Bed with wardrobe

As we have already understood from the above, the space under the upper tier can be used for the benefit of the child. For example, install a wardrobe there. Such beds even got their name - a loft bed with a wardrobe. They look like a monolithic structure, in which the wardrobe is located at the bottom, and the bed stands directly on it and is additionally fixed to the wall. This design seems to be the most reliable. Agree that in this case, the space is used very efficiently. In addition to the closet, you can build a study table with bedside tables, a computer table or even equip a sports corner in the design.
