Cotton candy is quite a tasty delicacy, but the apparatus for its manufacture is very expensive and therefore it is not advisable to purchase it for home use.

However, almost everyone can afford to make a home apparatus for cotton candy at home. This will require a simple pan and some accessories that are sure to be found in every pantry. Making a home device will not take much time, and it will cost mere pennies. With a little work, you can make cotton candy from plain sugar at any time and in any quantity.

For the successful operation of the device, you will need a container that will be filled with sugar. This container will be subjected to heat, while the sugar will melt and rotate. As the container rotates, thin strands of melted sugar will be ejected through the openings of the container. The container must be placed inside a large pot to contain the ejected filaments.

First you need to pick up everything you need to make the device. This includes accessories and tools.
From the tools prepare:
- Drill and some drills. Be sure to have a thin (no more than one millimeter) drill.
- Soldering iron.
- A set of files.
- Scissors for metal and a can opener.


Device accessories:
- Jet-lighter. Such lighters are characterized by a blue flame and produce heat that exceeds the temperature of conventional lighters. At the same time, no soot is released during combustion. The lighter should be able to burn on its own, this is due to the fact that finding a hand with a lighter in a pan with flying sugar threads is somewhat inconvenient.
- DC electric motor powered by low voltage (for example, nine volts).
- The power source of the electric motor, can be a simple battery.
- A small tin can, preferably tall, from canned vegetables.
- Small cover for lighter installation, milk cover can be used.
- Large pot or bucket.
- A relatively long stick, longer than the width of the pan. Any wooden plank or metal rod will do.
- A rod or tube about fifteen centimeters long.
- Bolt, nut and washer small sizes.

After completing the configuration, we proceed directly to the manufacture:
1) We fix the lighter.


We prepare the stand for the lighter. It is necessary to wrap the lighter with cling film in at least two layers. Then mix some epoxy glue, pour it into the milk cap and place the lighter in the cap. After the glue has hardened, it is necessary to remove the lighter and clean it from the film. Removable lighter stand is ready.

2) Installation of the engine and rod.


The engine is connected to the tin can with a short rod or tube. At the ends of the rod, one hole must be drilled. One hole is designed to connect to the motor shaft, so the appropriate drill is selected. After drilling, insert the shaft into the hole and secure it with a drop of superglue. A set screw can also be used to fix the shaft in the hole, but this will require drilling another hole and threading, although it will allow you to remove the motor if necessary. Think for yourself what you like best.

After that, we drill a second hole for attaching the can. The jar will be bolted, so the drill must match its diameter.

Finally, we attach the engine to the transverse bar. This is quite simple to do, drill two holes in the center of the bar and fix the engine with two screws.

3) Installation of the can.


The tin can is the container in which the sugar will be melted. To do this, you need to pour sugar into it, hang it over a fire source and unwind it, while sugar threads will fly out of the holes in its sides.

You should start by cutting a hole along the top edge of the jar. Using a can opener, completely remove the top lid of the jar and file the edges with a file to remove any burrs. This will protect against wounds in the process of making cotton candy.

After that, it is necessary to drill a series of holes on the sides of the can, at its lower edge. The holes should be as small as possible in diameter, even with holes that are one millimeter in diameter, some sugar grains pass through them without having time to melt. Therefore, use the smallest diameter drill you can find. Drill holes at a height of about one centimeter from the bottom seam of the can.

4) Bank fastening


Drill a hole in the jar to attach it to the rod. Secure the jar with a bolt and nut. In principle, the jar can simply be soldered to a metal rod or nailed if the plank is wooden. But the option of fastening with a bolt and nut is better, as it allows you to remove or replace the can.

Pay special attention to the fact that the jar, mounted on a rod, is conveniently located above the source of fire inside the bucket or pan.

Cooking cotton candy




Installation is ready. Let's start making cotton candy. Light the lighter, put some sugar in a tin can, and start the engine.
Set the lighter inside the pot. Once the jar is sufficiently warmed up, the sugar will begin to melt and scatter through the holes in the sides of the jar in the form of cotton candy. After the formation of a certain amount of cotton wool, collect it with a bamboo stick.

Cotton candy (or candy) is cool, but quite expensive. And it looks like madness to buy a car for cotton candy to occasionally indulge in this delicacy. This DIY project comes together very quickly from an intact pot and what may be lying around in your bins idle.

The main part of the cotton candy maker is a container with sugar and holes, which will heat up and rotate, and the threads of melted sugar will fly out into these holes. This container will be inside the pan so that the sugar threads do not scatter throughout the kitchen.

Step 1: Required Materials


To make a cotton candy maker at home, you will need:

  • Turbo lighter - These lighters burn with a blue flame, the temperature of their fire is much higher than that of conventional gas lighters, and they do not produce soot. You need such a lighter with a fixed switch.
  • Small electric motor (8 V is possible).
  • Battery for the engine (I used a pp3 battery - krone).
  • Battery connector.
  • Tin can - I used a bean can. Of course, a fish can would have been better, but then cotton candy would have turned out with a fishy smell.
  • To install the engine in a mini cotton candy machine - caps from a bottle of milk.
  • Deep pot or clean bucket - the pot shown in the first photo was not big enough and I ended up replacing it with a larger one.
  • Long stick, longer than the width of the pot. I used a guide from an old dishwasher.
  • Threaded rod for the stem (about 15 cm. I used a 10 cm stud, it should be longer than the height of the can.
  • Small nut, bolt and washer. I took a steel bolt, it is perfectly screwed into a soft brass tube.

Consumables:

  • Sugar

Tools:

  • Drill with a set of drills (including 1 mm and less)

Step 2: Stabilize the Lighter



The lighter that I used in the typewriter was very unstable. And due to the fact that it was filled from the bottom, I could not just put it on epoxy.

In order to make a stand for a lighter, you need to wrap it in a couple of layers of cling film. Then mix up the fast-acting epoxy, and fill the bottle cap with it, insert the lighter into the epoxy. After a few minutes, remove the lighter and remove the cling film from it. you have a removable base for a lighter.

Step 3: Install the motor on the rail




The engine is connected to the pan with a threaded stud; for this, a hole for the engine shaft is drilled on one side of the stud. Such a hole is very convenient to drill with a desktop drilling machine but I managed manually. Check if it fits drilled hole to the motor shaft.

On the other side of the stud, drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the bolt you prepared. Fix the motor shaft in the hole with superglue.

Now you need to attach the motor to the rail. There was a hole in my guide from the dishwasher, which only had to be slightly expanded with a needle file. Drill two holes on the sides for the motor mounting screws.

Step 4: Prepare the can



This jar will heat up and melt the sugar, which means that it must be filled with sugar, fixed over the flame and quickly rotate around its own axis so that the melted sugar scatters around the jar.

First, cut a hole in the lid. I used tin scissors and a needle file. In order for the sugar not to fall out over the edge, I left a small edge. Practice has shown that it is not necessary, which means that the lid can be cut out with an opener.

In any case, the edge of the cut must be processed with a needle file so as not to cut yourself. Then you need to drill holes in the wall of the can along the bottom. I used a 1 mm drill for this, and sugar crystals fly out into the holes. Therefore, it is desirable to use the drill even less. I drilled holes about 1cm apart.

Step 5: Install the jar



Now screw the mounting screw into the drilled hole in the end of the threaded stud. If you have a tap for tapping the right size of internal threads, that's just fine, but if not, then it's okay - brass is a soft enough metal, you can just screw the screw into the hole.

Drill a hole in the bottom of the jar and insert a stud with a motor into this hole. Screw on the nut to secure the jar to the stud, so it will spin with the motor stud.

The jar, mounted on the shaft, must be located at a sufficient distance above the flame of the lighter, when installed on a pan.

Step 6: Making Cotton Candy




The cotton candy machine is ready, now turn on the lighter, pour a couple of spoons of sugar into the jar and turn on the electric motor. Place the lighter under the edge of the can. As the jar heats up, the sugar will begin to melt and fly through the holes in the jar into the pan. Once you have a few strands of sugar, collect them on a bamboo skewer.

Perhaps everyone likes it. However, it is not advisable to purchase an apparatus for its manufacture exclusively for domestic purposes. After all, the installation costs a lot of money. However, you can make a do-it-yourself cotton candy machine.

Is it possible to do it yourself

Almost everyone is able to create an apparatus for making cotton candy with their own hands. This requires a few materials and tools. Required parts and tools

Preparing the can

So, the do-it-yourself cotton candy machine is almost done. The tin can will serve as the container inside which the sugar will melt. To do this, you need to fill it with the product and unwind it. A hole should be made along the top edge of the jar. The top cover must be completely removed. It is better to clean the edge with a file.

On the sides of the can, you need to make a lot of holes, preferably at the bottom edge. To do this, use drills with a very small diameter, which only exists. It is better to step back one centimeter from the bottom seam, and only then you can make holes.

Installing the container

A couple of months ago, my grandchildren simply overpowered me with requests to try to make such an apparatus. (Painfully, they “fell in love” with this cotton candy, which they occasionally buy and bring as a gift from Nizhny Novgorod, because they don’t sell it in our village). (Do not be surprised, this is how we live - we rarely travel to “foreign countries” and very big cities).


As V.S. Vysotsky said: “There is nothing to do, he challenged the port wine, laid it down and leaked “miracle Yuda” ...”, in general, they persuaded me, and I started manufacturing this Apparatus:


And now, apart from jokes, I will briefly tell everyone who is interested in how to make the same (or similar) device myself from improvised materials at home.

I must say right away that there are no my “inventions” in this homemade product, but I’m sure that it will definitely pull on “innovation”.


And yet, this Homemade Sweet Mist Tool, as I called it (abbreviated and further SADIST), I have already made and use for its intended purpose (grandchildren are happy), so I will describe in great detail only the nodes that are important for the work of this SADIST. Some parameters are very important for repetition (unless, of course, you want to repeat this homemade work). Read carefully, I will explain all the difficulties in manufacturing that I encountered and repeatedly reworked to get a better result than the same devices made in the Middle Kingdom and those offered by DIYers on youtube.

  • Let's start with the main node:

After reviewing a lot of publications on this topic on the Internet, I realized that there is no need to " reinvent the wheel" because. the simplest and cheapest option for manufacturing the main assembly, a container for the formation and spraying of sugar caramel, will be two upper gear covers for a 50 liter (large) gas cylinder.

It is not difficult to find such gearboxes, especially since for our homemade products they may be faulty for their intended purpose. (Fortunately, we spent three years ago in our village in apartment buildings natural gas, in connection with which people abandoned bottled gas, so that these reducers are “at least a dime a dozen”).


So, we take two upper covers from these gearboxes, cut off one of them from the upper (conical) side to form holes 35 – 40 mm(we will pour sugar into this hole),

in the second, we drill a hole for mounting the Head on the rotation shaft (I have it 8 mm).

Then we grind the ends of the covers (which have the maximum size) on the skin (on the table) until a flat surface is formed (remove the flanges), and connect them with M5 bolts into a single assembly through the already prepared holes (there are 8 of them, we take four bolts longer for fastening the fan blades ) through washers - gaskets thick no more 0.2 mm. I used 0.1 mm thick stainless steel foil, putting 2 washers under each mounting hole between the covers.


For washers - gaskets, you can take aluminum, brass or bronze foil in several layers, but it is very important (use a micrometer) that the total thickness of the washer between the covers is no more than 0.2 - 0.22 mm (I tried to increase the thickness of the gasket to 0.3 mm, it would seem nonsense - 1 tenth of a millimeter, but the result is negative).

Can not use for washers - gaskets combustible material type of paper, plastic, etc., such as for making sugar caramel The head will be heated to 400-500°C.


The shape of the fan blades and the material from which they are made (it can be galvanized iron, aluminum 1 mm thick or more, tin and other elastic, heat-resistant and plastic material) does not matter much, the main thing is that their (blades) bend should be created during the rotation of the Head ( we will call it so) of the apparatus, the air flow is parallel to the Head, i.e. so that the airflow when the head is rotated rushed to the center.

I'll tell you honestly, if you did it right, you can be sure that this SADIST will definitely work for you. Can be changed a heating element, engine, fasteners, etc., the main thing you have is a Head (a container for the formation and spraying of sugar caramel), everything else is a matter of technique.

  • Go ahead:

It is not difficult to understand that as a basis for my homemade product (I really want to call it a SADIST, because I made and remade it for more than 2 months), I took a fiberglass circle with a diameter of 250 mm and a thickness of 20 mm that had long been lying in a barn, in In general, what I found, I took it.


There is nothing to describe here, you can take any suitable base(not necessarily round), the main thing is that it be weighty for stability, and to it (according to anyone) you need to attach legs (just kidding) legs, better rubber,

so that they do not slip on the surface when working. This (in any case) is necessary, because. Your design will vibrate as the engine rotates, and crawl away from your chosen place (guaranteed).

  • Now the engine:

In principle, the engine, forgive me our main "Commenters" of this site for not calling it "electric motor", you can take any, starting from the old washing machine and others like him, from old "hefty" tape recorders of the "Timbre" type, etc. The main thing is that he asynchronous, i.e. brushless(so that it runs through the capacitor) and that it revolutions of rotation were between 1000 and 1350 rpm. A brushed motor cannot be used in this design. it usually has very high rotational speeds and short-term operation.


Honestly, on no site, believe me, I studied them quite a lot, when describing such a homemade product, more than one author did not indicate the parameters of the engine he used.


During the manufacturing process, there were many engine options that could be used in my device, such as:

Based on the dimensions of the structure, it was the best fit for the above parameters and fasteners. I won’t lie, I don’t remember where it came from, but it seems to me from some kind of big reel “mafon”.

  • We mount the engine right in the center our grounds(I think there is no need to explain in detail here), do not forget - it is very important.

When attaching the engine, I put on the mounting bolts between the base and the engine silicone bushings

(they can be taken in old bad CD or DVD drives of the PC,

By the way, a good thing, if you take it apart, do not throw it away).


This allowed me to partially reduce vibration transmitted to the base when the engine rotates and provide vertical adjustment of the shaft engine (by tightening or loosening one of the four bolts securing the engine to the base, I got the opportunity to change vertical position motor shaft relative to the center of the base).

  • The basis for a shaft of the engine with the Head (the top framework).

As a base for the head shaft and connection to the motor shaft, I used old aluminum frame 25 watt dynamics(there are a lot of such speakers in old wooden speakers like S90, etc.).

I dismantled it to the skeleton, and fastened the lower part to the base of the structure with three ø 6 mm studs. The upper part of the speaker frame, in which there were already four holes for mounting, I connected, for greater structural rigidity, with the base with ø 5 mm studs. I used these studs to fasten the cladding finished construction And making it more rigid my SADIST. This is very important, because all further devices will be attached to this one, let's call it "upper", frame.

  • Unit for connecting the motor shaft to the Head.

On the Internet there are many (yes, to hell, full, over the roof, etc.) options for making this node. The bottom line is to find a suitable mount that has a bearing in which you can insert a shaft that can be connected to the motor shaft and on which our Head (a container for forming and spraying sugar caramel) can be securely fixed. The “dead” stepper motor is best suited - two halves of the body of which with two bearings are connected together and attached to the base through ready-made holes, and a shaft is inserted into the bearing holes, on which the Head is fixed - a container for the formation and spraying of sugar caramel (by the way, this the simplest and best option, because shaft runout is reduced to zero due to the very high quality (as a rule) manufacture of such engines. Therefore, I strongly advise you, if you can find at least a stepper motor case, use it.


I did it like this:

At our dilapidated enterprise, according to old friendship, they turned me into lathe A T-shaped sleeve for installing two bearings (which I could find in my bins) with an internal ø 8 mm and a shaft ø 8 mm for these bearings and a soft sleeve, at the end of which an M8 thread was cut to mount the Head. They screwed up, of course, but "for lack of ...".

Nevertheless, after attaching the bushing to the upper frame and installing the shaft with the Head fixed on it, it turned out well (the runout was minimal), it only remained to connect the motor shaft and the shaft with the Head fixed on it.

To connect these two shafts coaxially with minimal runout, I used soft sleeve,

which was ordered for Alexpress. I had a motor shaft diameter of 7 mm, and the diameter of the shaft on which I installed the Head was 8 mm (it’s just that I found only such bearings, and it was easier to cut the M8 thread for our “turners” than the non-standard M7). Everything worked out in the best possible way.


By the way, these soft bushings are simply a Chinese miracle - you can order any size on each side of the bushing, they cost a penny and the quality is beyond praise. In this regard, the Chinese are super.


Look at aliexpress by just typing "soft sleeve". I was shocked by the price when I saw these bushings on the site and shocked twice when I received the order and appreciated the quality. Well, it seems, I consider myself cunning in the "piece of iron", but, my homemade friends, I don't understand how they do it!


But, back to "our sheep."

So, I fixed everything and applied 220V to the engine, the Head (a container for the formation and spraying of sugar caramel) rotates with minimal beating. Everything's OK!!!


It remains only to make a stable heating of this Head in the lower part, so that the poured granulated sugar can, having warmed up to 180-200 ° C, turn into caramel syrup, under the action of centrifugal force, fly out into a 0.2 mm gap and, having cooled under the blades of the built-in fan, driven by an air stream, rise up in the form of a Sweet Mist in order to be wound on a stick and fed to "hungry humanity".

  • So, heating element.

At this stage, “dancing with a tambourine” began for me.

I could not find anything ready-made suitable for my design, so I decided to make a heating element (hereinafter referred to as NE) myself.

Initially, there was an idea to organize the heating of the Head using a gas burner that operates autonomously from a collet (dichlorvos) cartridge,

however, after several tested options, it was not possible to obtain a stable operation of the NE. When the Head was rotated, the flame of the burner either blew out and went out, or began to smoke, overheated the sugar caramel, and it flew out without forming a sweet fog (cotton candy). During experiments with gas, the lower part of the Head became sooty (you saw it in the photo).


In addition, on reflection, I decided that using two sources of energy (electricity and gas) in one design is at least wasteful, and at most stupid. It was decided to make a home-made mini electric stove on the model of those that were made by our grandfathers, when there was nowhere to buy everything, and there was nothing to buy.


My NE (mini electric stove) was supposed to consist of a frame with legs, a stone in which a nichrome spiral was laid and the nichrome spiral itself.


Under the frame in all respects (inner diameter, height and withstand high temperature material) ideally suited a tin can from under the "red" fish - Sprat in tomato sauce. There is one here important point, must be taken tin can, i.e. she must definitely magnetize. Its inner ø 98mm and outer ø 100mm Head - well, just what you need!!! The height was also suitable for my design, so that I did not have to cut it.

In the bottom of the can-frame of the NE in the center, I drilled a hole for the shaft - ø 18mm and three holes ø 5mm for the mounting legs-bolts.

but during operation, the asbestos cement began to delaminate and, in my eyes, lost its right to exist. final, the most reliable and secure an option was to make a Stone for a spiral from refractory brick(also called fireclay). It is not difficult to find such a brick, and, as it turned out, it is processed quite easily. Without much effort, I sawed a whole brick with a grinder (cutting circle for stone) along, leaving a plate 22mm thick, then I made a 100mm square out of this plate, processed it to a perfect circle ø 98mm on an electric sharpener and drilled a hole ø 18mm in the center.

(When processing refractory bricks, a lot of dust harmful to all living and non-living dust is formed, therefore I recommend doing this work outdoors and at least in a gauze bandage. To reduce dust during processing, of course, it was possible to soak the brick by dipping it in water for a couple of hours, but I did not do this, because. I was not sure how it would behave during processing, I was afraid that it would start to crack).

Homemade unit for the production of cotton candy

It is not necessary to purchase a professional device, the device can be made at home using improvised materials and tools. Consider the steps step by step.

  1. To assemble a miniature car, prepare 2 tin lids (a sample from baby food jars will do).
  2. Rinse the covers, put on protective gloves, grind them with sandpaper or a file. When processing the product, you need to remove all the paint so that later it does not get into the cotton candy.
  3. Now start creating holes on both covers. Poke many small holes in the first lid with an awl or a thin nail, the final product (sugar threads) will come out from there. In the second lid, make one larger hole, granulated sugar will be poured into it.
  4. Connect the covers together to form an impromptu cavity inside. Fix the result with aluminum wire or other convenient method.
  5. Take any small motor (from a hair dryer, blender, mixer), attach it with nuts to the covers.
  6. Now you need to prepare a solid base to which the structure will be attached. It can be a flat turned board or a piece of plywood.
  7. Take the crown batteries, connect them to the motor terminals, observing the polarity. On one side, install a thick cardboard sheet or whatman paper, folded in half to form a partition.
  8. Pour 40 gr. into the opening of the lid. granulated sugar, heat the rotating cavity with matches or a lighter.
  9. The composition will begin to melt and settle on a solid partition, you just have to collect it with a stick or wind it on any other thin object (cutlery handle, cocktail tubes, etc.).
