We make a mannequin with our own hands

If you are sewing clothes for yourself, it is best to buy a soft mannequin. It is lightweight, durable and resistant to high temperatures and deformations. This design has a fixed size, but it can be easily compressed to, for example, wear a piece of non-stretch fabric. In addition, you can steam clothes directly on the mannequin. The soft mannequin is able to absorb excess moisture and does not deteriorate from high temperatures.

Such a mannequin is easy to make on your own. This method is cheap and does not require a lot of time. This is especially convenient if you need a sewing mannequin for children's clothes. Firstly, children do not like long fittings, and it will be much more convenient for you to work with a mannequin. Secondly, boys and girls are growing rapidly, the proportions are changing. Making a new soft mannequin will not be difficult and costly for you.

Materials and tools

To get started, you will need the following:

  • T-shirt of the appropriate size;
  • Wide opaque tape;
  • Filler, for example, holofiber;
  • Cardboard;
  • Scissors;
  • Attachment for fixing the mannequin.

As you can see, nothing complicated and expensive is needed in order to make a soft mannequin yourself. You can take the T-shirt that you are no longer going to wear (old, with a stain). It is used as a base, namely the inner layer.

Manufacturing technology

Find a convenient time and start doing the mannequin. If you are doing it for a child, warn him that it will take about half an hour, since everything needs to be done at one time. The sequence of work will be as follows:

1. Put the prepared t-shirt on your model. If you are making a female sewing mannequin, be sure to wear a bra. If the T-shirt has a large neckline, cover it with a film or a bag;

2. Start modeling. Glue a strip of tape under the bust, as well as in directions from the shoulders through the middle of the chest;

3. Continue gluing the strips parallel to the first until the top is completely filled;

4. Shape the shoulders and sleeves;

5. Glue the stripes along the waist and hips. Also shape the surfaces completely;

6. When the entire T-shirt is pasted over, you can repeat the procedure with the second layer for strength;

7. Carefully cut the T-shirt with scissors along with the glued layer of adhesive tape and remove the resulting product from the model. The rest is done without her participation;

8. Glue your soft mannequin along the cut with a strip of tape;

9. Seal the holes where the hands were;

10. Fill the product with holofiber or any other material;

11. Make a bottom for the structure out of cardboard and glue it to the mannequin;

12. Use the fastener to fix the structure or leave it as it is.

All is ready. Now you have a sewing mannequin that exactly replicates the figure of your model. Use and enjoy the convenience of a simple and inexpensive thing done by yourself in half an hour.

The question that everyone who sews clothes for themselves asks: how to make a mannequin with your own hands? It is needed during testing. After all, it is impossible to make corrections on your own, for example, from the back. Therefore, a tailor's mannequin is not a whim, but a necessity.

A sewing mannequin can be soft or hard (this allows you to use pins when trying on).

The support for the structure can be made of wood or metal (based on your own capabilities).

A handmade mannequin repeats all the features of the body and is indispensable for sewing at home.

First you need to prepare necessary materials, such as:

  • food film or several large plastic bags;
  • scissors;
  • plaster bandages (can be bought at a pharmacy, in case of absence, replace with ordinary bandages and dry plaster);
  • wire;
  • construction and reinforced tape;
  • synthetic winterizer, foam rubber, batting;
  • tape measure;
  • plumb;
  • coat hanger;
  • base for mannequin;
  • mounting foam;
  • wooden handle for a shovel;
  • unnecessary t-shirt;
  • PVA glue;
  • paper;
  • felt-tip pen.

You definitely need an assistant, you can’t do without him. Put on your usual underwear, it is better to put your hair under a cap. Start work in the morning (the process can take a long time) in a well-ventilated area (air access to the body will be limited).

Step-by-step instruction

A simple option involves using an unnecessary t-shirt.

  1. They put a T-shirt on the model, put a layer of cling film on the neck.
  2. Scotch tape is cut into 30-50 cm for greater convenience and a frame is made with it: a layer above the chest, along the protruding points of the chest, under the chest, on the waist and hips. Several vertical stripes fix them.
  3. Next, tape the T-shirt completely in a circular motion (without tightening it so as not to violate the dimensions).
  4. After the shell has turned out, the main lines are marked with a felt-tip pen: chest, waist, hips. Vertical lines are applied using a plumb line. Also mark the control points for connecting the parts after cutting.
  5. The resulting frame is cut along the midline of the back and the model is released.
  6. The workpiece is connected (focusing on the marking lines) with adhesive tape. Glue the holes in the neck (after placing a coat hanger there) and hands.
  7. The frame is placed on the handle for a shovel, it inner part can be filled mounting foam or filler (holofiber). When using polyurethane foam, filling should be done in layers (after the previous layer has dried).
  8. When the mannequin has taken shape, a bottom is attached from below (a hole for the handle is first made in the center).
  9. Clarify the dimensions of the resulting mannequin, if necessary, correct with batting or padding polyester. On top of the frame, it is recommended to “put on” a product made of thin knitwear to give a finished look.

The second way is more laborious.

  1. Wrap the body of the model with cling film (without squeezing), then paste over with tape (as in the first case). It is important not to tighten the protruding parts (in these areas it is recommended to use short pieces of tape)
  2. Plaster bandages pre-moistened with water are applied in the direction from the back under the chest and then on the back crosswise (so that they do not slip along the smooth adhesive tape). After laying 3 layers, let them dry. When applied more layers, the frame becomes heavy, this must be taken into account.
  3. Carry out markings on the frame (lines of the chest, waist, hips, control points) and cut the resulting frame along the side and shoulder lines. The resulting halves are freed from adhesive tape.
  4. From the inside, the surface is treated with paraffin (pre-melted).
  5. Layer-by-layer fill each half of the frame with mounting foam, after filling, connect the parts of the mannequin (at the control points) with adhesive tape, after inserting the coat hanger, and leave to dry completely.
  6. The bottom of the frame is leveled with a regular hacksaw (they cut off the excess). Irregularities on the frame can be smoothed out by sanding with sandpaper. A layer of putty will help eliminate them. After it dries, it is recommended to repeat the grinding.
  7. Paste over the mannequin with paper in several layers, compare the obtained dimensions with the model. Eliminate the difference by applying a layer of batting or synthetic winterizer (gluing them to PVA).
  8. A thin layer of batting can be glued onto the entire mannequin (for the convenience of using pins when trying on) and placed on a stand. You can use a handle for a shovel and a cross from a Christmas tree (so that the mannequin is stable). From above, the frame is covered with thin knitwear to give a more aesthetic appearance.

The finished mannequin can be used for sewing blouses, dresses, jackets, coats. If it happens that the proportions of the figure change, with the help of batting, you can easily correct and continue to use the mannequin.

Having such a mannequin is the dream of every sewing lover. After all, thanks to him, you can engage in modeling clothes like a real designer. Create draperies, check the accuracy of patterns and fit while sewing, and you never know what else you need such a mannequin for!

Burda magazine suggests making such a mannequin as follows.

For work you will need:

Stuffing (you can use any material at hand),

Scissors with blunt ends

Metal leg-riser (for example, for a microphone or a tripod),

Wide electrical tape (adhesive tape, packaging adhesive tape),

Thick cardboard for the base of the mannequin,

An old hip-length T-shirt

Film for products (for the neck).

What to do - see the images below.

1. Put on a T-shirt (better if it is narrow). The T-shirt will be cut, so donate an item that is no longer needed to create a mannequin.

2. If your T-shirt does not have a stand-up collar, then protect the skin of the neck with food wrap.
3. Apply adhesive tape directly under the bust around the entire torso. Tighten the tape properly so that your future mannequin meets your measurements as accurately as possible.
4. In order not to tighten the chest, stick the tape on it crosswise. Start at the bottom of the left chest and pull the tape diagonally across inside chest to right shoulder. Repeat the same on the right chest.
5. In this way, cover the entire surface of the chest with adhesive tapes.

6. After that, work horizontally. Stick the tapes parallel to each other. Apply 2-3 layers of tape to the front and back, stretching to give the mannequin stability.
7. Wrap the neck area again with cling film, then stick short strips of duct tape horizontally around the neck. Do not pull the adhesive tapes too tight here.
8. This is how the finished torso pasted over with ribbons looks in front and behind.

10. Mark the waist line according to your figure - this will help you later sew more accurately. To do this, lean a little to the side - where a fold appears on the material, make a point with a marker. Repeat the same on the other side. Connect these two points with a straight line.
11. Using scissors with blunt ends (medical, for cutting bandages, for example), cut the mannequin shell along the line of the middle of the back. Cut along with the t-shirt fabric.
12. Gently pull the mannequin shell forward, removing it very carefully so that it retains its shape.

13. Reattach the mannequin shell with short pieces of duct tape.
14. Seal the opening for the neck.
15. Seal both hand holes as well. Only after that you can start stuffing the mannequin.

16. Stuff the mannequin shell with artificial cotton, try to stuff the torso as tightly as possible, then it will be easier for you to work with pins later.
17. Place the torso on the cardboard, trace around the contour, cut out the base, cut a cross in the middle for threading the riser bar. Thread the rod into the mannequin, if necessary, additionally fix its position with adhesive tapes.

18. This is what a finished mannequin looks like, made to measure.

19. To make your mannequin pleasing to the eye, sew a suitable cover made of dense fabric on it. And enjoy your health!

Mannequins are actively used in various fields of activity. They are necessary not only for those who are engaged in tailoring. They are actively used in trade, demonstrating the available goods. Whatever you need them for, you can not buy them in the store, but make them yourself.

Mannequin according to the figure: preparation for the project

Today in stores you can find mannequins for any size, even adjustable. The most affordable mannequins are fixed size mannequins. They are hard and soft. But none of these mannequins will be able to exactly repeat your figure, as they are made according to GOST sizes.

An alternative option is a sliding tailor's mannequin. On such a model, it will be possible to set the required measurements along the line of the chest, hips and waist. But from the minuses of this design, one can single out: fragility and not a perfect match of the silhouette. It would be great to have a maximum copy of your figure and use it for fittings. But the real mannequin - expensive pleasure Let's make our own

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Long skinny T-shirt
  • 2-3 rolls of tape (adhesive tape)
  • Filler for pillows or blankets, such as sintapon
  • piece of cardboard
  • Food wrap (for the neck)
  • metal rack

Put on a T-shirt, it should fit the figure as in the photo. Wrap your neck in cling film for protection.

Ask a friend to help wrap your figure with tape. Wrap it under your bust first, pretty tight. Then cross the tape as in the photo.

Finish the job by gluing the bottom of the cardboard. Place the mannequin on the metal stand.

As a stand, you can use, for example, a leg from a floor lamp.
