Worshiping Damballah means worshiping beauty - flowers and white. His day is Wednesday. Its symbols are snake eggs and snakes themselves. Because the snake is a servant of Damballah, the snake is treated with reverence (but not worship).
Damballah feeds on pure, white foods like cornmeal, olive oil, cake, champagne and white wine, milk, sugar and eggs. His sacrifice is a pair of white chickens.
Damballah is a snake. He plunges into a pool of water built for him, or climbs a tree. He is rather unsociable and likes to be in silence. He does not give people accurate information, but radiates a calming presence, instills a spirit of optimism.
When Damballah possesses someone, that person must be offered an egg, which he cracks open with his teeth. Those possessed by it crawl while walking and cannot use their limbs. The people he possesses stick out their tongues like snakes, climb trees or rooftops. Damballah whistles because he can't speak. It brings the rain necessary for a good harvest of crops.

Aida Wedo
Aida-Wedo - Damballah's wife. She appears as a short, coiled snake that eats bananas and lives mostly in water. Her symbol is the rainbow, and her colors of the rainbow are represented by the poteau-mitan, the center of the temple. Often appears in the form of a snake with her husband.

Ogoun
Ogoun is a traditional warrior figure in the Dago-Mei religion. He is very similar to Zeus in Greek religion and mythology. Ogoun is a powerful, powerful, triumphant spirit. In modern times, Ogoun has taken on a new identity that is not entirely related to his African roots. This is a crafty and powerful political leader.
He gives strength through prophecy and witchcraft. It was Ogoun who is believed to have inspired the idea and gave the power to the slaves to make a revolution in 1804. Now he is called to help the people get a government that is more responsive to their needs.
It has many different aspects in WHICH it performs certain functions: 1oa of fire, 1oa of lightning, 1oa of the phallus, 1oa of metalworking. Like Ogoun Fer, for example, it represents stability, order, and power. As a wounded warrior, he represents the figure of Jesus Christ, known to people from Christianity. Like Ogoun
Feraille he gives strength to his servants by slapping them on the thighs or behind them. As Ogoun Badagris, he can lift a person and carry him to show his special attention and patronage. In all aspects, Ogoun displays power and militancy.
Its color is red, its victim is a bull.
Obsession with him is sometimes accompanied by violence. The obsessed with it washes his hands in flaming rum without any consequences for himself. Such people dress in red, brandish a saber or machete, chew a cigar, and demand rum with the old phrase "Gren mwe fret" ("my balls are cold").
Often this rum is poured on the ground and set on fire. The sword or machete is his weapon and he pokes it at himself, but the blade does not penetrate the skin.
Ogoun is identified with Saint James, the warlike general.

loco
Loco - spirit of vegetation, guardian of shrines. It is associated with trees. Loco has an extensive knowledge of the pharmaceutical properties of herbs. Priests get their knowledge from him. He is the 1oa of healing and the chief of herbal healers, who always call upon him before beginning healing. Loco sacrifices are placed in straw bags that are hung from tree branches.

Grans Bwa
Grans Bwa lives in the deep forest, where the vegetation is wild. He is a wildlife advocate and does not like to appear in public. He eats fruits and vegetables in the forest all day long, and when he is called to a ceremony, he is not usually hungry, but people always give him food in one way or another. He must be called before anyone is initiated into the voodoo priesthood.
He is known to be a good judge and is often called upon to resolve the dispute in case of conflict. He does not tolerate injustice, and it is said that he turns into the wind to listen to people who do not know that he is around.

Legba
Legba, also called Papa Legba or Legba Ati-bon, is not only the main Petro loa, but also the best known and most revered of all loa in voodoo. He represents the sun, is the god of the gate. He is depicted as a man splashing water, or an old man walking with a stick, he also personifies the ritual waters and the unification of the mysteries of voodoo. He began to be identified with the Apostle Peter and Jesus Christ, as he possesses the keys to the world of spirits. Each ritual is preceded by a call to ^egba; without his permission, it is impossible to "open the gate" between the spiritual and material worlds, and no other loa can penetrate the earth. Therefore, no relationship between God and man can take place without Legba's approval, no other deity can join the voodoo ceremony unless Legba has been invoked, and no loa can act without Legba's permission. This makes Legba the most powerful of all 1oas. As another incarnation, Maitre Carrefour, he guards the crossroads and is the patron of witchcraft. The sacred tree near the temple is the Legba altar.
Legba smokes a small pipe and carries some food in his bag. When he takes possession of someone, the limbs of the person are twisted. His symbol is a lion and a white sheep. It feeds on the bones of animals.

Erzulie
Erzulie is the loa of love and the symbol of the perfect woman, she is the wife of Legba. In a pure and virgin state, her personification is the moon. In other states, she is the ideal of a love bed and often takes male devotees as "husbands". Many other aspects of Erzulie cover not only love and goodwill, but also jealousy, dissension and revenge. She can often be cruel to women and their desires. In the altar room of the temple, she is represented as a ship hanging from the ceiling. As offerings, sweets, pleasant spirits, perfumes, flowers and candles are sacrificed to her.
Erzulie is the ability to think, dream and create creatively. She is the most beautiful and sensual woman in the voodoo pantheon, respected and wealthy; she wears long hair and demands that her lovers set aside a special room for ritual sex.
She is very rich, and when she possesses someone, the first step is to perform a very elaborate toilet. All the best that is in the temple is intended for Erzulie. She will bathe using the new soap. She will dress in silks, take fresh flowers and other signs of her femininity.
She loves to dance and is the most graceful of all the loa. She loves men, will dance with them, kiss and caress them, often very indecently.
Erzulie wears three wedding rings, as she was married to Damballah, Ogoum and
we. She often flirted with Zaka, but then dismissed him as unworthy. However, Erzulie All-Eda can take any attendant as a lover for a day.
However, Erzulie's visit never fully satisfies her. She always starts crying at the end. The world is too big for her. People try to soothe her with gourmet food or liquor or other gifts, but her tears continue to flow. It is these tears and sadness that allow women to feign obsession with her in the most brazen way. She is closely associated with the Virgin Mary and her symbol is a heart, usually pierced by an arrow in much the same way as in the portrait of Mary. One aspect of Erzulie is Erzulie Dantor. If Erzulie Freda is a rich white woman, the goddess of love, living in an atmosphere of perfume and luxury, then Erzulie Dantor is a black woman, who is represented in the lithographic illustrations of Catholic books as "Saint Barbara of Africa". Tribal scars are visible on her cheek. She is heterosexual in the sense that she has a child, but she is also the patroness of lesbian women.
When she appears at the ceremonies through the possession mechanism, she stammers the single word "ke-ke-ke-ke-ke!". She really likes knives. She is considered the protector of the newly initiated Houngan and Mambo, as well as women who are abused by their husbands. Here are the songs performed for Erzulie Dantor.

This song means that although Erzulie Dantor no-gala is seven stabbed and bleeding, she is strong, she cannot be destroyed so easily.

Agwe
Agwe (Maitre Agwe, Met Agwe) is the master of the sea. Under its jurisdiction are not only all the flora and fauna of the sea, but all ships that sail into the sea. His symbols are tiny boats, brightly colored oars and shells. He likes military uniforms and gunfire.
Agwe's ministry is quite different from others, as it takes place directly at sea. All kinds of Agwe's favorite foods are put on the raft, including champagne. This raft is launched into the water where the sacred underwater world is supposed to be. If the raft sinks, then Agwe has accepted the sacrifice and will protect the interests of those who prepared it. If the raft floated back to the shore, then Agwe refused the sacrifice, and he must be propitiated.
Agwe is one of Erzulie's three husbands.

Simbi
Simbi (Simba, Simbe, Simbi Andezo) is the guardian of fountains and swamps and cannot live without fresh water. His rituals are held near the springs. He is fairly knowledgeable in loa because he spends a lot of time learning about the nature of diseases of supernatural origin and how to cure them. As part of the Ogoun army, he is the leader of the Coast Guard and goes where he pleases. He is 1oa of the coast; one of the most respected members of the Petro family. But, due to his gentle nature, he also belongs to the Rada family. Sometimes, when neglected by ministers and hungry, he can become violent.
He lives in springs and rivers.

La Sirena
La Sirena (Yemaya in the orisha tradition) is a marine loa. It is believed that La Sirena is married to Agwe. When La Sirena appears in the sanctuary, the person she possesses appears to be a young coquette, taking great care of her appearance and speaking French, often insulting the peasant minister.

Ti-Jean-Petro
Ti-Jean-Petro (Petro-e-rouge, Ti-Jean-pied-fin, Prince Zandor, Ti-Jean-Zandor) - loa of black magic, depicted as a dwarf with one leg. Even though Ti-Jean-Petro has a French name, his roots come from Africa. It is easy to compare it with a spirit that wandered through the bushes and was also depicted with only one leg. Ti-Jean-Petro often protects and helps evil sorcerers. He has a strong and passionate nature, which becomes evident when he possesses people.

carrefour
Carrefour (Kalfu). The name of this loa translates as crossroads. Represents the opposite of Legba, also controls the crossroads. In fact, if it were not there, the world would be more rational, the best place. Not unlike Pandora in Greek religion and mythology, Carrefour rules over the evil forces of the spirit world. He allows for failure, deliberate destruction, failure, injustice.
Legba governs the positive spirits of the day; Carrefour controls the evil spirits of the night.
When Carrefour takes possession of a person, everyone involved in the ceremony stops talking because that person is allowing the evil loa to enter the ceremony. He demands that most of the important loa know him and cooperates with them. Some people claim that he is a demon, but he denies it. This is a respected 1oa, although he is disliked by many, a master of amulets and witchcraft and is closely associated with black magic.

Guede
Guede is a fearsome figure dressed in black. He controls the eternal road that everyone must someday cross - the road from life to death. His symbol is a cross on a grave. Guede governs access to the underworld.
Guede is also the spirit of eroticism, which is beyond good or bad, since this eroticism is inevitable. Guede is neither delighted with eroticism nor ashamed of it.
When Guede possesses someone, he often vilifies people who pretend to be away from eroticism. He ridicules them, embarrasses them, insults them. He is especially fond of doing this with white people, as they often have the puritanical sexual attitudes of Western culture.
Loa of sexuality, he is crazy about women, constantly uses obscene words and songs, performs obscene dances. The possessed Guede, dressed in a black coat, top hat and sunglasses, performs a spiral dance in which he imitates the movements of sexual intercourse.
Guede is a clown and a brute. He is loved very much, because his appearance always brings laughter and joy. He loves cigarettes and often smokes two at the same time. He is neither good nor evil, but people surprise him and that is why he jokes so much.
In addition, Guede is an advocate for children. He doesn't like it when children die. They need a full life. Thus, he is a loa, resorted to in seeking help for a sick child. He has power over zombies and decides if humans can really be turned into animals.

Baron Samedi
Baron Samedi of the loa Guede family is the Master of the Cemetery and guardian of ancestral lore. Representing the darker, darker aspect of Guede, he has many aspects himself, including Baron Cimitiere, Baron la Croix and Baron Criminel. In all his aspects he appears as a nasally-voiced male loa who carries a cane or wand and dresses in black or purple. Having settled into a person, he can spew curses. He is considered to be the last resort in cases of death caused by witchcraft, because even if a witch spell should cause a person to die, if the Baron refuses to "dig a grave", the person will not die.
Baron Samedi, together with his wife Maman Brigitte, is also responsible for the souls of the dead and their escort to loa Guede. Baron Samedi can be invoked in case of infertility, he is also a divine judge whom people can turn to by singing the song:

The grave of the first person buried in any cemetery in Haiti, whether the person participated in voodoo rites or not, is dedicated to Baron Samedi, and a ceremonial cross is erected on it. In the countryside, families can erect their own Baron Samedi cross, and no temple is complete without a Baron Samedi cross.
Baron Samedi can be summoned at any time. He can appear without a call, he is so strong. He drinks rum, in which twenty-one hot peppers have been immersed, and which no mere mortal could swallow. His ceremonial food is black coffee, roasted peanuts, and bread. He dances admirably and sometimes places his cane between his legs to represent the phallus.
It is said that one day Baron Samedi entered a houngan who was a homosexual. A passing woman called him "masisi" ("faggot"). Baron Samedi got angry and shouted at the woman: “I am Baron Samedi! This houngan, my houngan, he's a fag, yes, but I, Baron Samedi, I'm not a fag, I'm fucking a beautiful woman
Maman Brigitte! And he pursued her, threateningly waving his staff.
Fet Guede, the Feast of the Ancestors, symbolizes the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one, similar to European witchcraft tradition. Whatever a man owes Baron Samedi, Maman Brigitte or Guede, he must pay by this time, iron Kriminel sings to his debtors:

Maman Brigitte
Maman Brigitte, surprisingly enough for voodoo, is British by birth. She is a derivative of Brigid or Saint Brigit, the Celtic goddess of poetry, blacksmithing and physicians. She must have arrived in Haiti in the hearts of the deported Scottish and Irish servants. There is even a song that voodoo devotees sing in ceremonies:

Maman Brigit, h soti nan anglete.
(Maman Brigitte, she came from England.) At present Maman Brigitte is regarded as the wife of Baron Samedi, Master of the Graveyard and head of all deceased ancestors. Maman Brigitte, like Baron Samedi, is a rude 1oa who uses a lot of swear words. She drinks hot rum with pepper, so hot that a person who is not possessed by Loa could never drink it. She also places red Haitian peppers on the skin of her genitals, an ordeal women are subjected to when they are suspected of faking possession. She dances a sexually suggestive and highly artistic dance, and the virtuosity of her dance is astounding.
Maman Brigitte and Baron Samedi are the mother and father who transform the souls of the dead into 1oa Guede, removing them from the mystical waters where they were without knowing their identity and their name.
There is a mournful song about the state of souls in the mystic waters, which is also sung as the candidate for initiation prepares for a period of seclusion, ritual death, and rebirth in the cycle of initiations:

Loa Guede
Loa Guede (spirits of the dead) - a huge family of Loa who originated from the souls of the dead. Since they are all members of the same family, the spiritual children of Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte, they all have the same surname - La Croix, the cross. No matter what other name they go by, their signature is always La Croix.
Here are some of the names of the loa Guede: Guede Arapice la Croix, Brav Guede de la Croix, Guede Secretaire de la Croix, Guede Ti-Charles la Croixy Makaya Moscosso de la Croix; and such sad names as Guede Ti-Mopyon Deye la Croix (Guede - Little Lost Crab Behind the Cross), Guede Fatra de la Croix (Rubbish Guede la Croix), Guede Gwo Zozo nan Crefc Tone de la Croix (Guede Big Dick in Vagina la Croix), etc. There is a reason for the existence of these strange names, which will become clear later.
The vast majority of the loa Guede are men, but there is at least one woman among them, called Guedelia. Her name also adorns several buses in Port-au-Prince, but it's hard to tell if she's the famous loa Guede that can appear in any temple, or if she's unique in the "family" of loa Guede. Loa Guede can possess anyone at any time.
Loa Guede are transitional beings, as they are between life and final death, between ancestors in Ginen - the realm of the dead and living people. This may be why Loa Guede are honored in the middle of an orthodox voodoo ceremony, after Rada and before Petro.
Loa Guede look like their father Baron Samedi - in black or purple clothes, elaborate hats, dark glasses, sometimes without lenses, with a cane or baton. They also dance ritual dances, but retain the personal identity of the person from whom they are descended. For example, the Spanish-speaking loa Guede holds his staff like a guitar. He pretends to play it while singing love songs. It's a bit atypical, but many loa Guede showcase their geographical origins.
The loa Guede family, including Guede himself, as well as Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte, are notorious for their use of swear words and sexual terms. The reason for this is that loa Guede is dead and cannot be punished. However, these curse words are never used in a vicious or offensive way to "curse anyone". They are always humorous, even when conveying a specific message.
There are some very majestic songs sung for loa Guede. Nowadays, however, the emphasis is on sexual and lewd humor. There is a popular song sung for loa Guede in public celebrations and in temples:

Loa Guede also steal. Its theft is usually limited to a few pieces of coconut meat or roasted grains. At the Feast of the Ancestors - Fet Guede, most of the temples prepare food especially for the hundreds of loa Guede that show up and wander the streets. There is a song that the loa Guede crowd sang as they approached the home of the generous mambo Lamesi (from the French La Merci, gratitude):

Azaka
Azaka (Azacca, Zaka) is a simple calm farmer who is highly respected by the peasants, as he likes to work like them. He usually walks barefoot, wears a shoulder bag and a straw hat. By nature, he is suspicious and hates the townspeople. His singing consists of almost unintelligible sounds, reminiscent of the bleating of a goat. He is known for the gossip he spreads and for his partiality to female gender. He is young and loves to play when he is not at work.
Azaka, the loa of agriculture, is generally known as Brother Guede. For this reason, Guede often comes during Azaka's ceremony when Azaka has entered someone.
Azaka notices who and with whom communicates and in what manner, who flirts with whom. When he possesses someone, he often tells all the local gossip.
There are interesting parallels between the sophisticated Guede and the clumsy Azaka, as if a less sophisticated brother were imitating a more experienced older brother. Like Guede, Azaka loves to eat. But, unlike Guede, he is impolite and greedy in food, often running away to sneak and eat it quickly.

Djab
The Creole word djab comes from the French diable - "devil", but this term has a different meaning in the context of Haitian voodoo.
Some 1oa are individual and unique, served by only one houngan or mambo, and are practically the personal property of that person. These voas are not included in the liturgy of orthodox voodoo, neither in Rada nor in the Petro group. Such 1oa, and even the 1oa served by many priests (eg Makaya loa), are commonly referred to as djab. In this case, it is more accurate to translate this word as "wild spirit."
The djab feature is related to sorcery. A djab is most often invoked by a houngan, mambo, or bokor on behalf of a client to commit aggression against that person's enemy or business competitor. Djab requires the client to pay for his services, usually in the form of a regular animal sacrifice.
The houngan or mambo communities that serve as djab usually defend themselves against their possible aggressive actions with a garde, a witchcraft "shield" ritual that consists of rubbing specially prepared dried herbs into small cuts ceremonially made in a person's skin. The garde ritual is held annually around the winter solstice, when each priestly community holds a major meeting and prepares herbal baths and other concoctions.
Light scars from the garde are a mark specific to the community and may be a hallmark of its members. Djab can also refer to a specific place (like a cave). Even if mambo, loungan or bokor serve such a djab in a temple located elsewhere, those places remain the home of the djab.
Especially evil djabs are called upon to drain a person's life energy and bring him to death. When djab is responsible for the death of a man, Haitians do not say "djab killed a man", but "djab la manje moun nan" - "djab ate 1 man". This does not mean that human flesh was eaten by a cannibal priest who was possessed by djab, just that djab absorbed life -
the strength of man. The orthodox houngan or mambo give at-never-doing harm, so djab invocations are most often attempted by evil bokor olduns. However, in orthodox voodoo, the southern call for djab to kill a person if the murderer, incorrigible thief, rapist, etc. The priestess Marina summoned Erzulie Dantor, often referred to as djab, and sacrificed a boar to her at the Bwa Caiman ceremony in 1794 when the Haitian Revolution began. During the Haitian Revolution, djab were very important and were believed to give invulnerability to the 7l fired by the French. Even the death of most of the members of General Le Slerc's expedition due to yellow fever was regarded as the result of djab's work.

The doctrine of the creation of the world
Africa has not left us any scriptures. Instead, we have a rich and deep mythology that lives on thanks to the amazing memory and poetic ability of the "griots" who passed it on from old people to children. We will give only a few passages that tell about the beginning of the world.
Damballah created all the waters on earth. Moving in the form of a snake, with his seven thousand rings he formed hills and valleys on earth, stars and planets in the heavens. He extracted the metals from the fire and sent lightning bolts to create sacred stones and rocks.
When he shed his skin, releasing the waters on the ground, the sun shone in the water and created a rainbow. Damballah fell in love with the beauty of the rainbow and made her his wife, Aida-Wedo.
Marassa - Divine Twins, originally a hermaphrodite, then split into a man and a woman. From them came the human race. Thus, the Gemini are the first people, the first children, just like the first ancestors, the first dead.
Revelations about 1oa first appeared in Ife, a legendary city located in West Africa. Therefore, everything in life and all spiritual power comes from Yife. The spiritual home of all adherents of voodoo is Ginen, where Yife is located, from where they were forced to flee to the African diaspora. After death, the higher soul
will return to Ginen to live with 1oa and the spirits [ancestors. Therefore, all voodoo practitioners refer to themselves as ti.guinin, sons or daughters of Ginen.

voodoo priests
Voodoo priests are called houngan (men) and mambo (women). They are leaders of the societe (community) and spiritual leaders and perform many functions.
houngan and mambo functions:
1. Healing.
2. Performing religious ceremonies for invoking or appeasing spirits.
3. Carrying out the initiation of new priests.
4. Predicting the future and reading minds.
5. The spell and the creation of protection.
6. Creation of potions for various purposes (from love spells to death spells).
7. Confession.
The powers of the houngan or mambo are absolute within the temple because they are the only ones trained to deal with the loa and interpret the complex teachings of voodoo.
The institution of the priesthood is usually hereditary. The future priest is trained with young age and is usually initiated at the age of 31 and over. The symbol of the priesthood is the asson ratchet, which serves as evidence of initiation and controls the course of rituals. Asson - A ritual clapper made from a hollow gourd filled with stones or small bones, with beads on the handle. "To accept asson" means to accept priestly authority.
